Message: Juan, I'm wondering if any Cougars who were travelling to or from Mexico over the holidays had interrupted flights. We were in Mexico and our flight back to LAX on New Years Eve was cancelled for security reasons. The Times wrote up a piece on a Mexico City flight being cancelled, but there was nada about our own flight's cancellation. (I also wrote up our experiences at my weblog http://joyrideswithoutmaps.net if anyone's interested). We too ultimately had to be rerouted through Mexico City, and arrived home only yesterday, a day later than expected. The interesting thing was, every airport (Bahia, Mexico City, LAX) gave us a different version on who cancelled the flight and why it was cancelled. My guess is that there were many more international flights cancelled than we heard about in the media--if other Cougs have had experiences with them, or heard about such flights, maybe they could talk about them, or email me? John I LOVE YOU MAAANNNNNNN but could you call Tom Ridge and get the alert level reduced to ultraviolet for the rest of the year? All this travel fragility has obliged me to uncork the duty free bottles of Herradura Anejo I had meant to bring back for friends...
Hola jose, I would think lots of flights are being backed up or cancelled because of extra time taken with security. Did any other Cougartown New Years commuters have trouble with connecting flights?

Message: In scanning through the last couple months posts to catch up on events, I noticed mention of Pink?s hot dog stand on La Brea. If it is being considered for an event, it has my vote! I and about half the college students in the Los Angeles area owe that old guy and his stand a lot. During the late 50s/ early 60s while I was attending an Art School on Third Street in LA we would occasionally visit Pink?s for lunch. He would charge the business locals the full rate (about 35-75 cents at that time) but when we stepped up to the counter, he would ask, ?students?? we would answer in the affirmative. He would turn his back to shield what he was doing from the other customers and then turn around handing us carefully wrapped hot dogs. We would give him our 35 cents and he would ring it up and give us back 25 to 30 cents change then wave us off before we could say anything. Then when we unwrapped the dogs to add our favorite condiments, we would discover he had crammed 2 dogs in each bun. Sometimes at the end of the month and low on funds, we would order the cheapest thing on the menu and he would give us the large dog and dump chili all over it for about a dime. He sure helped make our food budget stretch. I suspect that a lot of the loyal older customers they have now are grateful college/university alumni who are happy to pay the full price. BTW John, the checks in the mail....well, sort of.
Hi Baxter, Yes, Pinks has been a Cougartown run for a few years now and that old guy you're talking about was named Boris and pretty much ran Pinks in the late 50's and 60's.

Message: I was so sorry to hear about John Mackenzie. He was a really sweet guy. My favorite memory of him was in Mrs. Mark's English class. She had asked the question "What book is read more than any other?", and John had the answer. He started to speak, and his voice played one of those dirty hormonal tricks on him, and in a very high falsetto he blurted out "The Bible!". The whole class turned to look at him just as he cleared his throat real loud, and in the deepest voice he could muster up, he repeated his answer, "The Bible!" Everyone including Mrs. Mark just lost it. We laughed hysterically. He turned twelve shades of purple, and then fell over laughing, too. I have thought of that incident often through the years. Whenever I did something embarrassing. What a good sport he was. Thanks John for a good life lesson. You will be missed.
Great story, Sherry, thanks.....
