Message: We lost another Cougar Mother on Friday the Fourth. Shirley Cook, mother of Georgia, Donna, Debbie and Lynn and wife of Don, passed away at Long Beach Memorial Hospital. Some of you Holly Glen neighbors will remember her through the many PTA activities and her work at the schools as a playground supervisor. Rest in Peace Shirley.
My sincere condolences go out to all the family members.

Message: Paul, Paco nailed the location of the Insomniac down, now I wonder if anyone remembers a bar, or coffee house?, in Redondo Beach that had every inch of space inside covered with everything and anything including a gazillion business cards. You had to know where it was located or you'd never figure it out just by looking at the outside of the building (unless the crowd standing outside gave it away). Talk about CRS!!! Does anyone remember that place??? Carolyn
Hi Carolyn, was it "The Nut House"?

Message: Marco Larios (Class of '75) passed away last Saturday, July 5th, 2003. (He was married to my cousin Donna Dion) Marco will be at McCormick Mortuary, 1998 S. Pacific Coast Hwy. Redondo Beach. Viewing is Tuesday July 8th, from 4pm to 8pm. Mass will be celebrated Wednesday July 9th at 10am at St. Joseph's Church, 11901 S. Acacia Ave. in Hawthorne. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery 5835 W. Slauson Ave. in Culver City.
Regarding Dale Reeves: I'm sorry to say that Dale was killed in a car crash many years ago (age 21, if I remember correctly). I ran into his father about five years ago and learned the sad news. I have fond memories of Dale. We performed together as members of Hawthorne's community children's choirs.

Sorry for your family's loss, Beth.

Paco, great photograph, I think that might be my ?57 Chevy parked out front?or is it? Anyway, I sure wish I had it now. I sold mine to Louis Fredrick (HHS61) in 1963. Message: We are in the process of moving to a small town in Central Illinois called Sullivan (near Decatur). If there are any Cougars in the area, give me a shout. Last week when everyone was talking about Disneyland, my son and his new bride were spending part of their Honeymoon there. He is in the Coast Guard and Disney offered all service members a special deal for admission so they added it to their trip. He called me from the Pier Disney Hotel and we talked about the rides they had gone on. They went on my favorite, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride. They also reported that the old 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea Ride is still sitting empty. When I was there 2 years ago, they were remodeling the ride for the Atlantis the Lost Continent Movie so I'm curious as to what happened with that. The first time my family went to Disneyland, we rode the submarine ride and my mother (ever the gullible) started yelling, "it's going down, it's really going down" as the ride started - this was after we stood in line for almost an hour looping back and forth around and over the ride watching it glide along on the barely submerged track!

Message: Welcome back JB's, I made a couple of Coug contacts during the past 2 weeks..The first one was while playing in "The Rock and Roll Charity Golf Tournament" in Temecula I played with Janis Brown's (1966) brother in law, who lives in San Diego. And finally a new neighbor who was friends with 1960's Bernie Pressburg and has been searching for him for awhile..Vacation is over, back to work on Monday!
Thanks Paco, and glad you made some new Cougar contacts. I wore my Ctown tshirt a couple of times this past week but didn't have much luck. Speaking of Cougartown Tshirts, they are ready to be picked up, so please order any size you want as, temporarily, we have them all.

Don't know if I'm done vacationing yet. Just got back from Janet's and had a fun week in the sun, as we did everything from hiking in Yosemite to the fireworks show at Mariposa fairgrounds. Thanks Janet for a fantastic week.

Message: Hey John check out Paco?s pics and take a look at the photo of Insomniac Coffee House, what a beautiful picture of our time. This is where the likes of Maynard G. Crebs and all the beat nicks hung out during our early years of rebellion. You gotta love this photo just for the cars.
I remember making a wooden box in high school in wood shop (8in. X 12in. X 8in deep.) for the safe keeping of keepsakes from the past. A couple of months ago I was out in the garage looking over my past and discovered at the bottom of the box, a ticket from Disneyland in 1957. I shellacked the inside of the box in 1962 and brought it home and filled it with my treasures and there stuck to the bottom was an ?E? ticket. I can?t scan the bottom of the box because it?s 8in deep, so unless you see this box you?ll have to take my word for it. I rode a motorcycle for over 35 years and I can say that was an ?E? ticket ride in itself.

Hi Pat, Yes, I do remember the Insomniac but was never inside. Great picture of yet another So. Bay landmark.
And a D Ticket is as close as I can come.....

Message: When Disneyland still had the ticket books for rides they would put that aside for something like TWA night. Employees of TWA and their families could go on EVERY ride for only a five dollar admission charge. What fun just running from ride to ride with out bothering with tickets. Monsanto? was a cool ride. It's the one where it looks like someone is looking at you through the microscope as you enter the ride.
I remember Hughes Night at Disneyland when I worked there in the mid 60s.

Message: Saw the msg from M Wisham re crowds at Disneyland. (Lorraine was in my class). A while back, I read an article about Disneyland closing its gates during the day - 1st time ever. The article stated that this was necessary in order to preserve the Disneyland experience for the patrons inside the park. Now let me see...Substitute America for Disneyland...We may have to stop giving away tickets to come in - in order to preserve the "American" experience for all current inhabitants. Naah, just another typical racist, homophobe, bigoted, extremist, unreasonable (old) caucasian male.
No, it just sounds like a mid 20th Century Haytowner talking.

Message: I first went to Disneyland in 1956 for senior ditch day. A small group of us went there instead of the official picnic. We had a ball. I always loved the Jungle River ride, Richfield Autopia, Teacups and the G.E. Carousel, which has been gone for eons. It later became America Sings. I also loved the house of the future. It had lighting on the walls that you could change the color to match your decor or mood. I don't think that one ever materialized in real life. The giant rocket ship in Tomorrow Land has also been gone for years. Douglas Rocket to the Moon? You would climb to the top and sit in the seats which would recline and vibrate as though you were taking off in a rocket. It was also fun climbing in Swiss Family Robinson's Tree House. The Tiki Hut with the pretend birds singing was pretty cute. That was the old Disneyland it's changed a lot. Now I live 2 miles from Disneyland and have no desire to go anymore.

Are there any Cougars out there who were at the opening? From the early days I really liked the ?House of the Future?. Can you picture looking so far into the future? In 1956 they envisioned production quantities of microwave ovens (In 1967 Amana introduced tabletop microwave), flat screen televisions (though some were available in the late ?80s production quantities didn?t appear ?till the ?90s), videophones (introduced by AT&T at the 1969 worlds fair but still isn?t popular), electric toothbrushes (introduced in 1960 by Squibb) and ultrasonic dishwashers (You can get them for false teeth but nothing big, cheep, fast or quiet enough for consumer dish washing use). In the first 5-10 years of Disneyland what were your favorite Disneyland rides / attractions.
