Message: Paco good to see you back...You had a photo on your site of a classmate I have often wondered about... Neva Franz. Glad to see she is still around. I haven't seen the commercial you were referring to. I wonder if that is the same " I only have eyes for you" that was recorded by "the Flamingos in 1959. I have that one on my of my CD's.
No, this one was recorded by Harry Warren & Al Dubin, whoever they are.

Message: Well, I guess it takes a jarring to get one's memory back. What I am talking about is the feedback I posted last week about Japanese shelling L.A or any other places on the West Coast. Read that 2 freighters where attacked by a Japanese sub(I-19)...first one (Barbara Olson) was a torpedo missed but a navy destroyer was nearby and chased it away (off San Pedro area). The 2nd one was between Catalina and P.V. named Absaroka wasn't so lucky...got struck by the 2nd torpedo (first one missed) but the ship never sank but ran aground near Fort McArthur. A few months later Actress Jane Seymour(??) was in the hole of the ship that got hit and a "Life Magazine" took a photo of it. She held a sign "Lose lips sink ship" but the sink ship was crossed out and written on it was "Almost sunk". I am guessing the year was 1942. All this action was also witness by army observations on P.V. Wonder if George Keys remember this one?

Message: Hi Cougs, Jimmy Peppers, I will see Carol Coombs at our family reunion in 3 weeks and I'll get the real skinny on the "Spin the bottle" Caper. Wade it will be "Booty" a true freshman. I met a guy who graduated from HHS in 1980, by the pool in Cabo, his name was Chris but he wouldn't give me his last name. I asked him if he knew of Cougartown, he said he knew of it but wasn't interested. He wasn't interesting either..Glad to be back! Oh, has anyone heard the Mercedes Benz commercial with "I only have eyes for you" in the background? Anyone know who the artist is?
Hey Paco, Glad you're back and nice you made a Coug sighting too.
Also, this from Mercedes Benz, "We appreciate your interest in our recent advertisements concerning the Starmark Certified Pre-owned C240 Sedan. The music "I Only Have Eyes for You" by Harry Warren & Al Dubin is an original arrangement and not available for purchase. Unfortunately, due to copyright restrictions, we are unable to provide copies to the public."

Message: I was in Miss Black's 1st grade class at Ramona School that sad day in November. I remember our principal Mr. Fry tell everyone over the loud speakers that school was getting out early, and for everyone to go home quickly.
When I got home, my dad's car was there and he was never home during the week. I walked into my house and found my mom and dad sitting in front of our (black and white) TV crying. I did not understand why they were so upset, but I knew it had to be really bad, because it is the first time I ever saw my daddy cry.

They don't need a rush on them at the last minute and you don't want to find out that they are all gone when you want one. Remember Saturday July 5, 2003 is Cougartown T-Shirt day. Wear your Cougartown T-Shirt that day.
Thanks Chris for the reminder. Everyone wears their Ctown Tshirt on July 5th and we'll all keep our eyes peeled for Ctowner sightings.

Message: John, I couldn't tell by your comment how you REALLY felt about Mr. Caldwell. teehee!! I remember him as being a very crabby man. And that is the nicest thing that I can say. While reading some other Cougs memories of where they were when JFK was shot, Jessie Corral says he was in his 6th grade class at Eucalyptus with Miss Welch. She was also my 6th grade teacher at Eucalyptus. She is one of my teachers that I have never forgotten thru the years. I have very fond memories of her. John, I put my Tshirt check in the mail today. I ordered it and then forgot to mail the check. Ahhhhhh, another senior moment. Jan
Actually I thought Mr Caldwell WAS a real nice guy. He wasn't crabby his first year, anyway. Thanks too for the Tshirt order. It's getting to be that Tshirt time of year.

Message: Where was I when I learned that the Beach Boys went to HHS, I think it was 2 years ago on page 50 of C-town feedback. I think I was born with the knowledge, there are just some things you know. One Christmas, I guess back in the early 70's I got a cassette tape of the Beach Boys with Fun, fun, fun. It was one of my favorite tapes for a long time. I may have been a freshman at HHS when I did learn that most of them went to HHS. Of course every year near prom time, there were rumors that the Beach Boys would make a surprise appearance. Never happened.
Sooo.....was it 2 years ago on page 50, your freshman year in high school, or were you born with the knowledge?

Lots of fear and tears. I relived all of the same feelings on 9/11/01. So sad that sometimes it takes such tragedies to bring us all together. God Bless all and have a safe Memorial Day weekend. Jan
Ah yes, Mr Caldwell. I had him for math his first year at HHS.... Real nice guy.

Message: Good idea John, after all these years it?s still a very painful subject to discuss. New subject: It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon in 1962 and I was on my way to watch the ?Jalopy Derby? races at Gardena Stadium, listening to my favorite radio station KFWB, when ?Surfin? came on the air. I really liked the song but when the DJ announced that it was ?The Beach Boys from Hawthorne California? I nearly drove my beloved 1950 Ford Tudor into a ditch I was so excited. I knew that Brian had a band and had played at school functions, but I had no idea they were about to go big time. I felt very proud to be a Cougar and have been a Beach Boys fan every since. And, after 42 years, I?m still a proud HHS COUGAR!

Message: I was too young to remember where I was or what I was doing when JFK got shot. I do remember MLK, and RFK though. Whenever I read anything about President Kennedy, RFK and MLK, I often wonder how different history would've been if these 3 men were allowed to live out their lives, do their jobs and die very old men. I imagine the next generation will be asking us where we were when 9-11 happened, just as we have asked the previous generation where they were when Pearl Harbor happened. Hope everyone has a wonderful memorial weekend! Lets not forget to pay tribute to those Men and Women who have served our country in the past and those who are serving currently. I love being an American!
Me too, Jill....

Message: I was in 2nd grade at Lockhaven Christian School the day that JFK was shot. Just after lunch, we had a spelling test. When Mrs. Stipp got to the word "GUN", she just broke down and cried. None of us had any idea what had happened. When I got home from school that afternoon, my mother had the TV on - which she ususally never watched. She was sitting there crying, and that's when I found out what had happened.
Thank you Ingrid, but MAN, this subject is REAL depressing. What say we change it to, "Where were you when you first found out most of the Beach Boys went to HHS".

I remember them closing the school and my sister being very, very upset. I remember the bus ride home being very distrurbing. After that year, we went to public schools in Inglewood and we did not resurface in Hawthorne until 1969. Has anyone ever heard the song "Born in the 50s" by the Police? My momma cried' When President Kennedy died She said it was the communinists But we knew better Would they drop the bomb on us While we made love on the beach? We were the class they'd couldn't teach Because we knew better We were born Born in the 50s . . .

Message: I was still living in Hawthorne when JFK was shot. I was at home with my kids. I was so shocked I didn't know what to do. It didn't matter if you were Democrat or Republican, everyone was crying that day. I also remember when Oswald was shot right over TV. I was in another room and I heard the gun shot and commotion. Of course they replayed it over and over all day. I couldn't believe someone was actually killed while being televised. The killings of RFK and King were almost as bad. It seemed like the whole country was going nuts.

I used to take the bus, in those days, and remember that long ride home...........passing groups of people, gathered together and some who were alone.....so many sad faces and tears....it was like we were all one big family and the grief we shared was like that for one of our own loved ones. When I got home and turned on the tv, we could see the same scene being replayed over and over again, all over the country....we all felt the great loss.

Message: About 2 weeks ago Kathie and I were in Canada for a wedding. While we were there we picked up some items saved by Kathie?s Grandmother; who passed away last February at 106. Yesterday I was looking through some of the items and came across a TV guide from November of 1963. It was a memorial to the assassination of John F. Kennedy. I got to thinking this year is the 40th anniversary of the assassination and what I was doing. I was in PE in the swimming pool and the word just spread like wildfire. I don?t remember if the coach told us or if someone came to the fence and let us know. I remember going home for lunch and watching and listening to it on the TV and radio. I was in such a state of shock that I just couldn?t believe it. After lunch in all of my classes we just talked about the days events. I would like to hear some of your memories of the events.
I was working at Virtue Bros on Century out by LAX. I heard the news but again, don't really remember from whom. I went home too, in the middle of the day.
