I too have fond memories of the Fire Prevention Week assemblies at Washington School at which the chief would treat us to his great lectures. Margaret, your uncle Bob was indeed one of the kindest men we have ever known, and he was also one of the most respected and best loved pillars of this community, When I think of Chief Hartzell, I see the personification of everything that is right with the city of Hawthorne. My prayers and warmest regards are with Margaret and the Hartzell family.

Message: Dear Margaret,
Thanks for the note about my first "Chief", Bob Hartzell. Bob was Chief of HFD when I became an aux. fireman in '68 with his department. Even today as a fireman with Newport Beach, I remember Bob. Whenever I address fifth graders in the Junior Fire Marshall Program, I remember how I enjoyed listening to Chief Hartzell when I was only seven years old at Jefferson School.
To this day, I have yet to receive the great, thunderous responses from the kids. He was the best! He made 'em laugh and got to them with his message. Please pass on my thoughts, respect and prayers to his family.
Sincerely, Jim Pasternak '68

Message: I have been a fan of this site for well over a year! I did not graduate from HHS but I did spend several years of my childhood in Hawthorne. I have many many vivid memories. I lived on Cedar Ave and later on Grevillea. I was born in Hawthorne Community hospital in 1966. Our family Dr was Dr Whiteaker. I remember the ferris wheel on Hawthorne Blvd. I attended York Elementary school and I believe my 1st and 3rd grade teachers both taught Brian Wilson. They used to have this thing called The Citizenship Award given out each year I remember getting it in grade 1. I remember taking swimming lessons at HHS. My dad grew up in Inglewood and graduated IHS in 1961. This site is so fun. Thank you for allowing me to remember some fond memories.
Hi Kristine, I grew up on Cedar Av and I remember the ferris wheel too. Glad you're having fun here and glad you shared your thoughts. Come on back anytime, as I see you're a long long way from Hawthorne CA.

Message: Just received this email from Cathy Chauncey this morning. It reads:
The OL' COACH went into surgery at Eisenhower Hospital at 7:30 last Friday AM. All went well! The Doc removed two cysts from the disk, one above the vertibrae he had the hardware attached to 2 years ago, plus other repair work. He indicated that they were caused by the trauma he received when we were broadsided on the 405 Fwy last July. Took about 5 hours. By yesterday, Sunday afternoon they had removed all the tubes and attachments, fitted him with a brace, and had him walking up & down the hallway 5 or 6 times. I can't believe such a fast recovery. So much faster than last time. Of course, last time his cerebro-canal, with the spinal cord, was condensed to about 1/4 of an inch at one point. He couldn't even stand prior to that surgery!
Today, after lunch, they plan to transport him to Brighton Gardens, a re-hab facility run by Marriott, just around the corner from Eisenhower. He will be there just a few days, then home. The phone number there is 760-340-5999. Don't know a room # yet. He will need to wear the brace for 3 months or so.
Thanks for all the e-mails. I have made copies of each and taken them to the hospital for him to read. He really appreciates each on of them.
A special BIG THANKS for all the prayers and all the concentration on him Friday, the big day! He couldn't have done it all alone. You truly are special FOH (Friends of Hal)!
Our love to you all....Cathy

At the present time he is stationed in Jacksonville, FL and his ship is the USS Phillipine Sea. I think the cookie campaign is a great idea. I am sure the men and women will enjoy them whole or crumbs, because someone thought of them. Next Christmas my son will be on deployment, quite possibility in the gulf, and missing home, his wife and son. I am sure if someone sends cookies, etc., they would love it. So start thinking about next year. They may really need our love and support even more by then. John, thanks for all your hard work on the Cougartown Web site. It has been fun, and stirring up memories, catching up on the feedback page. I don't know about the rest of you guys, but it seems Christmas came around very fast and caught me somewhat off guard this year. Best Wishes for the New Year to everyone out there. Cheryl, I will be contacting you for a new Cougar antenna ball, mine disappeared off my car. One of you living in Simi snatch it?
Hi Nancy, Glad you're still out there and next year we'll add a few more sons and daughters to our Cookie Campaign. Thanks to everyone who contributed this year.
