Message: Hi C-Towners-
Short Story - I'm sure many of you remember the vapor trails from the rocket firings from Vandenburg AFB years ago. Tonight, while driving my daughter and her girlfriends to their first high school football game, Vandenburg fired off another one. The girls all freaked out, screaming "Oh my god, oh my god, its a nuclear bomb!!!!!!" I had to think fast - I hadn't seen one of these in years. "It's a rocket, uh, from that Air Force Base, uh, a trail, yea, a vapor trail!" Shades of the 1950's. . . . .
Betty

I've got a great picture I took of one of those about a year ago, but I'll be darned if I can find it now. I saw one about 3 months ago, so it's still happening. Thanks Betty.....

Message: Just got some sad news from Tom Quintana. Doug Robertson, long time Haytowner, member of the Board of Trustees, and publisher of the fabulous "Portraits of a Memory" book passed away on July 27th at his Fresno home. Doug was born in Canada but his roots were in Hawthorne, as he and his family came here in 1924. He went to school in Hawthorne and graduated from Inglewood High. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for many years and was passing out diplomas the year I graduated. Doug, you and your publication were a link to early Hawthorne and the South Bay that has been lost forever. You, my friend, will be truly missed. I didn't know you long enough.

Message: I haven't browsed the Feedback page for a long time, and today I saw a few comments about Trinity Lutheran Church so thought I'd add my two cents worth. I was baptized by Dr. Falde (yes, he became a bishop in the American Lutheran church). I remember the ground-breaking ceremonies for the construction of the church, as well as the dedication service. Pastor Heipler came some time before I started confirmation (1963) and was still there when we moved from the area in 1966. I saw him a few years ago at Trinity's 50th anniversary, and he hadn't changed much from the mid-60's, other than to get more gray hair. His daughter, Nelene, died a few years ago from cancer. My folks still hear from the Heipler's at Christmas.
I also remember the Del-Aire market -- we lived on 117th near Isis, and I marvel that we were allowed to walk all the way to the market without a parent when we were in 3rd grade! I don't think parents these days can be so brave! Does anyone remember the little branch library that used to be a couple doors away from the market?

The guest list read like "The Who's Who of Hawthorne". Arizona Tom, Two of the Sloey brothers, Wolfy Poltash, Jan and Judy, The Hoods, The Beirman sisters, Brother Bill, John Crotty, Wayne and Donna and the list goes on. Mike Backus and the folks up in the Northwest were truly missed. Can't wait for the next 'LB' party. Perhaps you can have a "Going Away Party" for Doris next week.
Sounds like a great time was had by all. That's what it's all about....old friends getting back together and I'm sure the Princess has one more party in her before her coach turns back into a pumpkin, don't you Doris??

Message: I finally had a Hawthorne Memory! Most of us had to take a class called State Requirements in order to take Driver's Training at HHS. Dallas Yost and a couple others of the Boys Coaches usually taught this class as a zero period in Nyman Hall. I was 15 in my Junior year at HHS (you had to be 15 to take the class) and had asthma so bad in the mornings it was sometimes 10:00 am before I could get to school (I had to walk back then from Del Air ?in the snow, barefoot, both ways--). Needless to say I missed most of the State Requirements class and was not going to be able to take Driver's Ed without it.
My dad was very friendly with the Football coaching staff (My dad was one of the electricians that volunteered to wire HalCap Field) and was an avid member of the HHS Football Boosters (even though his girls weren't on the team? for the record, he adored Wade Greasby and probably would have traded us females in for Wade if given a chance) Anyway back to my story. Coach Yost told my dad that he would pass me in his State Requirements class if I would give him a hand written reproduction (including all pictures and diagrams) of the California Driver's Handbook. So I spent my mornings and evenings reproducing the book and turned in one complete plagiarized version (in color) by the end of the semester. Coach Yost passed me with an A and when the time came to take the written test for my license I aced it with 100%.

Hey Kathleen, those are really tough to ace. Like the one HARD question I almost missed was:
When turning left, you should be:
A. In the center lane.
B. In the right lane.
C. In the left lane.
D. All of the above.
MAN, those DMV tests ARE brutal....
Where were you, the HIPPY, and the 36 Chev on Cruise Night?

Message: Sister Sue and I attended Shelly Gustasons memorial service on Saturday. Shelly was obviously much loved by many, many people... It was a beautiful service and I'll carry the memory of all that love with me for a long time.
AND...
At our church picnic Sunday, a woman sat down across from me and I asked her what I ask everyone I meet these days:
"Where are you from?" I almost choked when she said, "Oh, we moved here from the Hawthorne area." She is Norma Schillerstrom, who used to live on 134th in Hollyglen. Her daughter, Sue, was a 72 HHS grad. I told Sue to check out Cougartown and I hope she'll do it... we tried to find common friends and finally linked on Joy Rasmussen 74 (Sue Schillerstrom was friends with Joy's older sis, Jean.) Anyway, once again, six degrees of Hawthorne...

Thanks for the update on Shelly's memorial service as I feel she was loved by lots of her HHS friends. Thanks too, for passing along the Cougartown URL. Real strange how these Haytowners keep popping up all over the place; I love the "small Cougartown world" stories.
Thanks for the Tshirt drop off too.

Message: A news update; Doris A.K.A. "The Princess" has been spotted cursing up and down Highland and Manhattan Avenue wearing a Diamond Tiara and a feather boa. After a week of intense partying with all of her favorite Cougartown people, Doris is lying low and resting along the strand in Manhattan Beach. She will be in Southern California one more week before she returns to her beloved Idaho. When asked about what she thought of Hawthorne, she responded "I don't remember it being so damp!" This reporter did notice that she was packing a big can of Aqua Net in her purse. Doris will be at home on September 25th.
Thanks for the "on the street" update, Bob. Diamond tiara and feather boa, huh.......she wasn't seen in a Pink Caddy with a black dude named "Good and Plenty" Reggie, was she? Geez Doris, you leave Twin Falls for a couple of days and look what happens. Check in when you can.

Well there is an Oscar Meyer Museum at: http://www.kraftfoods.com/oscar-mayer/om_index.html. You can take a look at the history of the Wienermobile. You can learn to play a Wienerwhistle, you don't even need one, there is an interactive Web Wienerwhistle! But if just have to have to have a Wienerwhistle toy there is a link to the Kraft Store and you can purchase 3 for $3.50!
Thanks Chris, but the price is a little high and I'll bet, without looking, that todays wienerwhistle is made in China.

Message: Good Morning Cougs.... Just wanted to thank John for another great Cruise Night...It was great seeing everyone who could make it again...Also another it's a small world Cougar story...After much deliberation and not being able to stand watching anymore. Sunday I finally made up my mind to get back to surfing again. So off I went out on a venture looking for a new board. I started at Huntington Beach going to various surf shops working my way down the coast looking for just the right board. Finally I wound up in at a shop in Dana point. So there I am looking at boards and got to talking to a guy about this bitchen 10'4" noserider I am interested in. He wanders off to let me decide. Out of the blue I over hear him talking to someone about the Beach Boys and how they went to his old High School. Hearing that of course I had to inquire about it and sure enough he was from good ole HHS. His name is Gary Reider from the class of 65 so another Cougar found, and yes I did buy the board.....Let's Go Surfin Now....
GREAT STORY WALTER!! Thanks for sharing and for supplying the music on Saturday night. Hope you told Gary where he can find lotsa' his old buddies too.
