Message: In regards to Gary Miller's Devil's Dip question, the place we called Devil's Dip was off Imperial just past Western. It's Southwest College now. We started riding there on pedal bikes and in later years graduated to dirt bikes. There were many places to ride nearby in the sixties. Now it's all civilized and kids miss out on a lot of the fun we took for granted.
Note:Yes, I remember Devil's Dip. Great place to ride dirt bikes or do a little Jeepin', which I did in the late 60's. Saw a guy roll a brand spankin' new Toyota Land Cruiser there one day. Dropped his wife off at the laundromat and, with 17 miles on it, came on over to Devils Dip and promptly rolled it. I tell you the guy was sick.

Message: On November 7, 1966 I was in Hawthorne Memorial Hospital giving birth to my son Patrick. At the same moment he was being born there was a "tornado" in Hawthorne. The "tornado" ripped the roofs off the houses and took down the trees on 135th street between Inglewood Ave & Hawthorne Blvd. To this day we blame Patricks antics on that "tornado". My "tornado" is a Paralegal and married with two little girls (now he has his own "tornado", Alyssa). It's funny how things really do have a way of coming back around again. One other funny thing, my granddaughter Vanessa thinks it's wonderful that I can still do the "mashed potatoe" and makes me show her friends. Does anyone remember that one? Anyway, hello to all and thanks so much John for Cougartown.
Note:Maureen, Now THAT'S the Tornado I remember. Thanks for straightening that one out,and you are welcome for Cougartown.

Message: Sorry, Laura. The tornado hit in the spring of 1964, if I remember right. I was in 3rd grade at Eucalyptus in the cafeteria. I thought some "big" kids standing near the light switches were messing around when the lights went out. Then the freight train roar, and the stuff flying around outside. Message: john, i've looked at the car pages, and one thing i would like to know is, where did VIC ZACCAGLIN go? he had one of the fastest 409s in the area at the time if i'm not mistaken. i was home on leave in 62 AND GOT THE RIDE OF MY LIFE AT THE TIME. pacific coast hi-way, and just across the street from a big time restaurant, and i'm having a hard time remembering the name of that place. it was the ROYAL SOMETHING, the name eludes me. anyway he showed me that you couldn't grab a 20 dollar bill if he was accelerating. even if he was in the right lane(3rd)on a 2 lane hwy looking at trees straight ahead. i asked him if he was turning and he said no, we're just going to beat this other guy to the left. i also asked him how much his "gas bill" was and he replied that it was only a "118.00" for the month of aug., and that my friends, was in 1962. my how time flys!
Note:Hi Russ, I think all the Zaccaglins moved out around Lake Elsinore somewhere. I remember Vic's 409 and yes it was pretty quick. I think he finally sold it and bought a Pontiac Grand Prix. Too many tickets?? The place on PCH that you're thinking of, was probably the Plush Horse. Thanks for the shout El Rojo.

Message: Karen,
I'm so sorry to hear about Donna. Yes, I knew her well. We grew up together, in school. She was always the prettiest girl in school and every boy just wished they had the nerve to get close to her. I was lucky enough to be a friend. I don't know how many trips to the beach I made in your mother's red & white Ford station wagon, with Donna and Bruce Hoover. Bruce and Donna used to dance the "Bop" and would put on dancing exhibitions at the community bldg. on those Friday nights at the community bldg. and at school. I think that your mother worked as a chaperon at some of those dances. Donna was very popular and a beauty from early on. I am sending John a 3rd grade picture of her wearing her Brownie uniform. One of the memories that I have always held dear was when we all went to sixth-grade camp; Donna was a natural leader and loved to have fun - she made sure that everyone was included. I have many warm childhood memories of Donna.

Barbara Norris, Paula Chapin, Eleanor Brown, Valerie Davis, Stephanie Hall, Lucy Wolf, Jan Jolly, Lillian McDonald, Sandy Peppers, Pam Duncan, Andrea Malfi, Marsha Soares, Marsha Russell. See, I never forget the beach bunnies. :o)
No, actually this list is from an email from Marsha Soares West that I received last year (I never throw anything away). I knew it would come in handy, and bring back some memories to someone.
Thanks Jennie for the note. I was so sorry to hear about Donna. She was truly loved by her peers and will be fondly remembered. When you're ready, please send the Tribute.

Message: Ah yes, the Del Aire Community Building. It was built in the early 50's by a group known as the Del Aire Community Association. My parents were two of the founding members. Back then, the "Association" did all kinds of community good will stuff. They organized a tree sale in the newly built neighborhood - sold saplings, door-to-door, to be planted in the parkway in front of each home. They were "guaranteed to grow" and they did. Some of them got so big they made a kind of cathedral arch as they met over the street (like on 119th between Isis and La Cienega).
This group also was responsible for raising the money to build the Del Aire Park on Isis just north of El Segundo Blvd. I have old black and white photos of the dedication ceremonies.
But their landmark was "The Building". It did look like an old log cabin. And it was designed and built by that volunteer group of local homeowners. They gave the neighborhood a place where the locals could meet for dances, Christmas parties, wedding receptions, boy scout meetings, etc. It had a raised stage at one end and a kitchen at the other. I don't remember the juke box, but I do remember the old Coke machine. 10 cents for one of those little bottles! And it was ICE COLD. My dad helped build that place. In fact, my parents, and their close neighborhood friends in the Del Aire Improvement Association did a lot for that fledgling neighborhood.
When the 405 freeway went through, some of the original members were dislocated. Many of them moved into different homes in the same neighborhood. Then the "Century Freeway" plan uprooted many people who simply moved away. It was in the early to mid 70's that the D.A.I.A. finally dissolved. They sold "the building" to a guy that turned it into a pizza place. But it's nice to know, all these years later, that the work of my parents, and a lot of others like them, brought about so many fond memories. I can't wait to share some of the Feedback entries with my dad, next time I see him. He'll be moved, I'm sure.
Note:Thanks Ingrid for sharing the Del Aire Community info. I came from the other side of Hawthorne and we had our Boy Scout meetings in the Scout building in front of the Gunga Din, where the main library is now. The dances on our side were usually held at the Odd Fellows/Rebekahs lodge or the Womens Club on the circle on 121st and Acacia (since, razed for the Mall). Great memories all....and thanks again.

Message: Speaking of Holly Glen - when my family moved to Hawthorne in 1961, we lived on Glasgow Place. They had the freeway graded and it rained almost continuously for what seemed like months and dirt in vast quantities washed down into our back yard. My mother used to tell us to go play on the freeway when she was having a "bad kid day". I seem to recall that there was a family a couple of doors down that had a very large desert tortoise that they kept in their back yard as a pet.

Message: More Holy Glen stuff; I was a Daily Breeze paperboy (and my bro to) I had a huge route. It was bordered by 135th, Glasgow, Isis and 147 (across rosecrans). It was huge. I remember when the Daily Breeze celebrated their 25th year and the papers were so big they couldn't be folded and I had to carry each one and place them on the porch. My dad took me around in his pick-up truck. Thanks for saying that about my dad. He was crazy and everyone liked him His name preceded him (Casey Jones) He definitely wasn't shy. My Bro Les is a Highway Patrolmen. I heard he is the biggest Highway PAtrolmen in the country and one of the biggest cops too. He won some big award lately too. He moved down near San Diego and now patrols down there. I sure do remember the kiddie pool at Holy Glen and after the park guy put in the chlorine we had to walk around and mix it up. We used to play capture the flag in the tot lot. The turtle was always a favorite. I hit a home run that went into the tot lot from the middle league field. I helped build some of the bleacjers at the little league field. My dad was head umpire for a few years. I remember how much fun and how many people would come watch us play. The chilli was the best. Remember Winner suckers. Remember if you fetched a fould ball you would get a free winner sucker. How about Pixi sticks. How about the Half timber wolf and german shepard that the Hardesty owned on Glasgow. That dog was huge. It scared everyone when Mr. Hardesty would walk it. How the Zaccaglin house on 138 and Glasgow at Christmas. Or the bell at Don Smith School. Loved growing up in Holy Glen. We were close. Remember the Cake Walk at Cabrillo school during the Bake Week.

Message: I looked up this site based on the suggestion of a friend who attended HHS hack in the early to mid '60s. At any rate, he was telling me about a book that was available through this site that gives a fairly extensive history of the city. I would be interested in obtaining one if someone will tell me how to go about ordering.
In checking your Memories section, I did not see any mention of "Sam,s Place", on Hawthorne Blvd. (west side of street) just north of El Segundo Blvd. Incidentally, the bank on the So. West corner of that intersection was called Gateway, not sure if it was a state or national facility.
Great Site, keep up the good work.
