Message: Hi John,
What a party/reunion!! Fantastic ! Of course Cathy and I always get great pleasure seeing "my / our" former athletes, as well as their ladies! It just shows you what good basic people they were in high school, to be able to choose such capable and pretty ladies for their wives ! It doesn't surprise us to learn of their individual successes in their own business and job opportunities ! All the Coaches and Teachers and Administrators at HHS, realized we were blessed with the type of "kids" and parental guidance and assistance, and community support, that we were dealing with ! It's so easy to get involved with all the kids activities when you are surrounded with all this support. We are the ones that thank all of the above mentioned groups for letting us be a part of their lives!
At every gathering that I attend , and see a "kid" -- it usually brings to mind a story, or an incident about them at school ! I can never forget these memories! Well....... maybe when my quarterback fumbles on 3rd down , on the 3 yd line-- I wipe that out of my mind !
It was the best of the best parties ! Ritchie and Mary have given so much time and effort to the HHS alumni ! There has to be a special place in heaven for folks like that !
Thanks again for all your help and work on behalf of us all !
Stay well and god bless !
Cathy & Ol' Coach Chauncey
Hey Coach,
Ahhhh YES!!! Yet ANOTHER Rich and Mary Sloan Masterpiece. How do they do it? I know Janet and I had the best time ever.
These early Cougs all have something in common besides being from Hawthorne. They all got "A's" in deportment. I know our parents had alot to do with it, but you and the other teachers also had lots to do with correcting any bad cases of "smart mouth", "back talk", "sassiness", or problems we had with "middle finger syndrome" or just a general lack of respect for our elders.
Ask 200 Sophomores today what deportment means and you might as well ask them to explain "Relativity". We learnt it at home AND at school, thanks to teachers and coaches like you who genuinely cared about your "Kids". If you're proud of us for our accomplishments in life, be proud of yourself for instilling enough sense in us to keep ALL body parts unpierced (some kids today resemble walking key chains), hair color away from the "premature interview ending", purple, blue, green, or scarlet hues, and enough sense not to say to an interviewer, "Hey, it's MY body and I'll pierce, color, or hang RAGS off it any damn way I want!!".
Thanks for caring, Coach. We love you for it.
Now it's my turn to care. D-E-P-O-R-T-M-E-N-T, Sophomores...... please look it up. It will extend those job interviews and will usually shorten your "Burger Flippin'" years.

Message: Hi John...Marsha and I would like to thank Rich and Mary Sloan for their generosity this past Saturday afternoon and evening. The "Class of 60'turns 60" celebration was simply the best. To organize a get together like this is one thing, but to have it at your home is way beyond the pail. But then this is the Rich and Mary we have always known...It was so great to see everyone...classmates, coaches (Happy 80th Coach Chauncey!), faculty and friends. The Mexican food for lunch in the back yard was great. The Italian dinner was great food as well, but our table sat in a driveway?..I'm sure this was just an oversight buy Russ (ElRojo), so we will let it slide this time..:o)..Thanks again to EVERYONE who attended...I think you guys created a monster though, as hotel/banquet room reunions will never quite cut it anymore...Later Cougs :o)
That goes for Janet and me too. Thanks Rich and Mary for the grand reunion on Saturday. I know about 130 others would like to thank you too. Nice to see lots of early Cougs like Tom Porter, Jerry Hopkins, Jim and Ruth Beltran Reale, Gordon Martin, Russ and Judi Jacobsen, Coach and Jerri Plum, plus Mr. Art Orrell, my Junior English teacher, who looked like he stepped out of a time machine. Also great to hear that the Ol Coach and Cathy are feeling better after their car accident.
I don't know how you'll top this one, Rich, but I'm sure you're already planning something. Thanks for caring so much, and for corralling us old Cougs from time to time, so we can once again tell a few stories about HHS past and relive our Hawthorne youth.....we are all very lucky to have you and Mary.
BTW, you two have a beautiful home. I think I saw Hugh Hefner out back taking notes.

Message: Enza,Enza,Enza, how have you been? I was offered tickets to the Dodger Game yesterday, 8 Sept. but didn't have anyone to go with. Lucky for me it was on the tube where I could see Ishii get dusted four, five, six times. Coach Minami and Semon always told the pitchers to charge those line drives, not give referee signals. I hope Ishii's alright. A shot to the head from 55 feet, after delivering a pitch, could have been alot worse. That's got to be one of the scariest feelings having a ball coming at you at 100mph with 2 tenths of a second to react! I was wondering if you have go down to Dori's restaurant? I've been meaning to get up there myself. Hey college football is in session and Oklahoma is looking good, except for the kicking game. OK Sloeys, (J.B.J.) Nebraska is too. There isn't a game this year. And how about those Golden Bears of Berkeley? It's not all student up rising in those hills. Have a great week Cougs. JB we need an idea for a get together at the Homecoming game. Maybe an alumni tunnel?
Sounds great Wade.....You're In Charge.

Message: Funny My sister's message is just a bit down the page , we have not been in touch yet find ourselves drawn to the same place ... even separated by 2300 miles.
Anyway this is about the Beach Boys...the last cut on the other side of the original LP Brian segues out of the last song and into a sound effects track that gets deleted on all air play...
Please play the record and you will hear ... a railroad crossing wig wag ding dong bell, a dog barking, and a train.
I lived very close to the corner of 120th and Aviation Blvd. I know that sound it is a PET SOUND don't cha'know?
Craig Foster lived at the first house east on 120th from Aviation . On the North side the Beach Boys Pet Sounds Album is the sound of Craig Foster's Dog barking at the wig wag RxR crossing bell at 2 am ...Listen to the record. Listen good and tell me if I am Wrong! I grew up hearing that bell and that Dog and that Train all my young life... I know what I hear! e-mail me After you have played the record again...
I guess you're talking about the Pet Sounds album and you want Ingrid to email you or anybody to email you? I'm confused here..... I don't own the Pet Sounds album. Was going to buy it but can't stand barking dogs or wigwag sounds.

Message: Poor Kermit! Room for what John? you know there is nothing more secret than a garage with old cars and stuffed with car parts! I am out of room and store the 77 Cad. at mom's house. If I were to liquidate my rolling stock, I would not know what to do with myself. Here's another story about Jerry Simpson. Every time my Mom, now 87, hears Jerry's name mentioned she can't resist telling the story of the night Jerry and I were about to head out for the evening when the phone rang, Mom answered, it was Jerry's dad. He asked her to tell Jerry "to get his you know what home and put out the trash". Jerry was off in a flash. Our departure was delayed while Jerry complied with his dad's request. I wonder if kids today would respond as compliant as Jerry? More Later Donald
The garage is full and I have no room for OTHER things like woodworking tools. I wish I had a 12 car garage so I could keep it all.
I think we were lucky to have parents that cared about the trash, among other things. We just didn't realize it then.

I sure hope some of the 70's kids~("kids" HA!),show up at Cruise Night. Anyone wanting to go to a Dodger game this month, just let me know at Foster's. We can have a "mini" tailgate party/reunion. WOOOHOOO!! :-)

You could probably up your asking price by putting some Beach Bunny Flames on him. Should be easy enough to find , just look up Beach Bunny Flames in the Yellow pages. Sad news. How would you feel about being dumped because your 58 & not quite as fast as the new models?? Hope your making the right decision! TB from AZ

I always felt a bit of kinship with Shelly and Stephanie - same ages as Gloria and me, Susie and Sharon, Carol and Carmen, Tracy and Kelly. A loss too close to home. Message: Hey John! From the sound of things, it looks to be a big turnout for cruise night. My daughters and I are looking forward to it. Say, glad to see that Jerry Simpson, AKA Jeremiah P., is active on Cougartown. Jerry was a great friend in high school and remains a very special friend today. I have many stories about him, but will limit myself to two at this time. Back then, he used to ride a Cushman scooter to and from school and, from time-to-time, give me a ride. On the way to school one morning we were going north on Ramona Ave. crossing 133rd St. (no stop signs in those days) when we went over some dips I went up in the air and came down on my bottom in the middle of Ramona Ave. Jerry turned around to pick me up and told me next time to hang on. We were always pulling pranks on each other. One night at Lyons Drag Strip, in retaliation for one of Jerrys pranks, I pulled the rotor out of his 53 Ford and took off to the "A&W". Later that evening Jerry came in. He had to call his dad to come out and bring him another rotor. See ya at cruise night. Donald
That's why I liked the 58. You needed a screwdriver to remove the rotor and I always carried a spare coil wire. See you on the 14th, Don.

Message: Anyone who knew Shelly Gustason Malcolm is sad to hear of her passing. She was a vibrant character, a quick wit, a charming young woman; warm and caring, smart and savvy, fun and exciting. I had the pleasure to have spent quite a lot of time with her in High School, both in class, and after school. Her parents were exceptional role models, providing a loving home which encouraged both Shelly and her sister, Stephanie to become role models, themselves. Shelly's involvement in church and civic activities began in her youth, and continued throughout her life. She was a true friend, a loving mother, and a special person. I am honored to have known her, and the world is a better place for having her with us - however briefly. Shelly, you will be missed.
