Message: WOW! Lot's going on here. I want to give my condolences to Kathy Michael. My mother has worked in the Hawthorne School Cafeteria's for over 40 years and at 81, is still at it. She remembers your mother with fondness. God bless Kaz and all the cafeteria moms.
To Kelley and Mom B......Happy Birthday ladies! Spread out your celebration....you can milk it for a good week, if you play it right. And to Karen 'Angel' Hare Mitani, Best Wishes. You are the picture of a beautiful bride.
And last but certainly not least.......to John Baker, Congratulations, Man. You have survived another ski trip with your legs still in one piece and your pride only slightly bruised. Not bad.
Those of you CT readers out there who are sitting on the fence regarding Cruise Night, stop procrastinating. Make your plans now, today. You may never have another opportunity to walk up to a friend and say......"Show me your Cougar balls." See you all there.....DZ

Thanks Liz and YES... Cougar Balls are a reality. I went to lunch with John and Cheryl Nicocia yesterday and they'll have them on Saturday night. We'll see you all then.

Message: Here's a picture of Janet getting ready to GO FOR IT!!! This woman is a bonafide "ski ANIMAL".
She kept yelling, "Come on John, it'll be easy once you drop over the edge", but I didn't "fall" for that old line and this is where we parted company. YEP, as she set her sights on Gun Barrel, I was left, helplessly looking for a green trail. Yeah sure Janet, The black Diamonds are the easy runs....UH HUH!!! With names like "Deaths Door", "Gun Barrel", and "Are You Bleeping NUTS", I think I'll pass. I was looking for names like "Heidi", "Fluffy Pillow", and "Pink Squirrel" but never could find them, so faking a broken leg, I was finally picked up by the Ski Patrol, given a complimentary brandy, and taken safely to the bottom of the hill on one of those soft beds they tow behind a snowmobile. Ahhh, my kind of a downhill run.
Thanks Janet for a fun 4 days. I had a great time.

Message: I have sad news to report... My mother, "Kaz" passed away on February 19th from stomach cancer. She was 80 years old. She is being cremated and her ashes will be scattered in the Redondo Beach Channel near my brother Mark's. Many of you will remember her from the cafeteria, and the custodial department. Her fondest memories were of Hawthorne High. She enjoyed working with the people there, and she knew alot of the students. She will truly be missed.
Yes she will Kathy. I remember your mother from my senior year at HHS. Sad news indeed.....

Message: John, someone asked about Parks & Rec and I agree, the operation was a special one. Not many "coaches" could both coach a football team and prep kids for chess tournaments but the Parks & Rec people did this as part of a day's work. I remember in particular a coach named John Warner. I was on many of his teams. When he got reassigned from York to Eucalyptus, it seemed like he had moved to New England. And when he did time at Holly Glen, forget it, it seemed like a half day's bike ride away to a sixth grader. I think I played every sport that Parks & Rec offered, "Big Ten and Ivy League", except caroms. Nice memory, whomever brought it up.
Thanks joseph and where have you been? I hope you're planning on making Cruise Night.

Message: I was just was just sitting in bed nursing a cold when I thought about 7th grade. My teacher was Mrs. Holly. We called her "Brains." She got this nickname because every year she brought cowbrains to school to teach her students the finer points of fine dining. We cooked all kinds of things in class: cow brains, alfalfa sprouts, and other nuts and grains. She even had us watch Yoga, and science programs. Thinking back now, I think she did all those kooky things just so we didn't get into too much trouble. By trouble I mean chewing gum or eating sunflower seeds. Once I was sent to see Mrs. Alba and Mr. Blythe because I got caught eating sunflower seeds. At the same time, there was a mature looking 7th grader in the office with me. He was being sent home to shave and to change clothes so that his chest hairs wouldn't show!! Can you imagine what big problem that was!!? Too much hair showing!! But I don't recall that they sent any girls home for showing too much b...(oops) oh well. I wonder if they would do the same today. By the way, I got my sunflower seed bag taken away, and I had to have my parents come to school for a "meeting."
I remember Gene Jones in the 8th grade at Intermediate. He had a tattoo of a Panther on his forearm, and that was 1957. You talk about having some "hair". Thanks Maria........

Message: Yes John, I can still "box" papers. I thought that was for the Inglewood Daily News. Sometimes I wish I still had my old afternoon "Mirror" route, all around Jose Sepulveda school. We used to rubber band those, but I had great customers, Penny Prouty, George Rea, Sue Smith, Barbara Orr, Diane Dalton, I think when I started it was $1.25 a month. Ended my career with a morning car route with The LA Times, yes those were the good old days.
Hey Neil, I think you'll see all your old customers at our Reunion in July. If you can explain how to BOX a paper in an email, please send me the instructions. I think I got me a morning route.

The man who wrote the song "Hokey Pokey" died.
What was really horrible is that they had trouble keeping the body in the casket. They'd put his left leg in and...well, you know the rest.
John! What do you expect from someone who has just flown 22 hours through 5 time zones? See ya all at Cruise night.

Message: John - Here's a memory from "old" Hawthorne. I have wonderful recollections from the great Parks and Recreation Dept. in our area. I recall Halloween costume parties, pet contests, toy loan programs, doll contests, theme parties, and organized games. I loved going to the pool, and cheerleading for the Pop Warner teams. I remember joining Hawthorne Youth Band in Jr. High. My kids don't have as many organized activities to do that are free nowdays. My kids also don't live in times when it is safe to walk around all by yourself. We would take the bus to Manhattan to go to the beach or Inglewood to see a movie. Even with my kids growing up in a small town, we as parents have to use more caution nowdays. Does anyone else remember the great programs at the parks?
Great memories Kathy, I remember making whistle hanger thingys out of that plastic stuff at the Parks and Rec. Does anyone remember how to braid those 4 strand lanyards with the square slider thingy? Also, does anyone remember when they used to fold the Hawthorne Press like this? Can anyone of you paper boys remember how to do it? I can't cuz I've tried.

A bigger question is could anyone pass it today? See you at Cruise night!
She won't be needing any eye protection as she only gets to dust it.
Thanks for the heads up on "Fat Boy Speedos too, Chris. I think I still have my "Baggies somewhere. See you on Cruise Night....

Message: Hello fellow Cougars, I too was interested to find out if there is any upcoming news for the Class of '77's 25th reunion. It would be great to touch bases with old friends from both St. Joseph's and HHS. Although having bought a house (3 houses from my mother's) on the same block I grew up on, in Del Aire enables me to keep in touch with a few friends from HHS...it would be great to see those who have moved out of the area. For any of you who recall me back in my high school days....the big joke is ... and too much amazement...I'm a high school teacher.
Thank you John for the great web-site,
Mary Ann

Thanks Mary Ann, Although nothing is listed for the class of 77 25 year reunion, please feel free to call the school at 310-263-4400 and ask there too. They could hear of reunions before Cougartown.
