Message: Hey Dan, you seem to be an officionado for just about every subject, I am curious about something. I have an album by "Its a beautiful day" and on it, it has their one and only hit, "White Bird" If anyone knows if this lp is worth anything, I would be interested in finding out. It is in good condition.
Hope the holidays are treating everybody nice. I am sorry to hear about Bob, I did not know him, but I am sad whenever we lose a Cougar.
I just found out something ironic, Capistrano High School, which is the school my kids will go to when they come of age, are also the Cougars. How about that, my kids will be 2nd generation Cougars, yeah, I know it's a reach, and probably only interesting to me.
GO CHS Cougars!!!

Message: It is always truly sad to hear about the passing of one of our own. To the family and friends of Bob Rierdan, my heartfelt condolences. Fellow Cougars, thanks to John's Cougartown Top 40 song list. I started a project over a year ago. That project was to find, compile and record on Cd's as many as possible of the top 40 singles from 1960 through 1979, some of which I brought to the Cruise Night Last April. I changed that goal to also include some of my favorite songs from the 50's & the 80's. I finished that goal this past Saturday which now consist of 218 Cd's and over 4,700 songs. Thank you John, this was truly a labor of love and I wouldn't have started it if it weren't for the work you put into Cougartown of your song list. ( Now if I could just get a career as an oldies Dj).
Hey Walter, I forgot to mention........that's not the correct list...............JUST KIDDING!!!
Now you can make us all copies!!

No more shutting off in the middle of a message. I won't know how to act. Oh, and PACO, I didn't know there was MUSIC on Pacos pics. Beautiful.
On a sadder note, I was sure sorry to read about Bob Rierdon. He was a nice guy. I remember him because he was friends with Mike Keene. Now they can party together again.
Great!! Now you can send Paco a Christmas scene from the whiteness that is Keno.

Message: Merry Christmas everyone! I just got back from my first try at holiday shopping - aaaaaaahhhh. Christmas memories - One Christmas Gloria and I were looking over the morning Santa gifts when we noticed a rope leading out the front door. We followed it and lo and behold there were two brand new sting ray bikes sitting on the porch - VERY COOL. On another note, we used to go to Sears to see Santa and tell him our wishes. I still remember being in awe of him. I cherish the one photo of Gloria and me sitting on his lap. Come to think of it, I think I'll take my kids to see Santa today.
Why did Santa leave your front door open? Didn't he know your house was in Hawthorne?

Message: Dan, I'm glad I'm not the only one who realizes what great bands we had in our "daze" I can remember going to the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and seeing Montrose open up for Slade. I believe it was the winter of 73 and if my memory serves me well, it was their first L.A show. The majority of kids at the show ironically were there to see Montrose, a true testimate to how great a band they were. I still think the L.P. plays well considering its now almost thirty years old....ouch!

I'm currently on an aircraft carrier (can't say which one for security reasons) presently deployed in the North Arabian Sea doing what we are asked to do by the President. We are all greatful for the support you all had shown us. We've been out here ever since that day and we'll gladly stay out here until the job is complete. Again, thank you for all your support and God bless America.
Hi Ron, Thanks for the feedback and thank YOU and all the military for help in ridding the world of GARBAGE. You guys are doing a GREAT JOB, and we all want you to know you're appreciated more than I can say here. Yes, God Bless America, and God Bless the United States Armed Forces.

Message:I was saddened to learn this morning of the passing of a very good friend.... Bob Rierdan, HHS61.
When I first put the website on a server back in 1997, Bob Rierdan was the first person that emailed me saying, "Great Website". When that happened I said, "I'm going to find ALL the lost Cougs". Bob and I emailed each other for months talking about the old days and different people we hung out with, places we hung out at, teachers we hated, and girls we liked. Bob, what can I say now. I was just thinking about you last week. I hadn't heard from you in months and should have emailed you.....now I'm real sorry I didn't. I did get to reconnect with you on a Pinks run about a year ago when you were in LA. Little did I know that it would be the last contact between you and me. I'll miss you Bob, as I'm sure so many of your classmates will. You were one stand up guy.

Message: Earlier today, Keith asked if anyone had any personal Pearl Harbor Day memories. The only one I have is that life as I knew it, changed. There was no longer the peace in life that seemed to exist before and I find that just a tad weird that I remember this because I was just under 2 years of age when it took place. Oh yes! And also, my Dad started working at Northrop Aircraft on December 7, 1941. He said he hadn't been at work long that first morning when they were given the news of the happenings in Hawaii. A sad day, to be sure, only to be outdone by the September 11, 2001 tragedy. Gosh! Now I feel like I should say "Let us pray"!
What a Country!!! I don't think Bid Hidin's had a chance to do ANY holiday shopping this year.

Message: Bud, I did not know you in the Hawthorne Daze BUT the Montrose Lp featuring Sammy Hagar on vocals is absolutely indispensible. For those of you who don't know what we're talking about, you may have heard a sound bite from "Space Station No. 5" in the commercial for the Applied Materials company (NASDAQ AMAT). (Also, Montrose was the guitar player for Edgar Winter's classic tracks Frankenstein and Free Ride (coincidentially both used in recent commercials -- one with Tiger Woods and the other showing how fast your life gets after having kids). Being the Tribute Band Man that I am, I've kicked around the idea of putting together a Sammy Hagar tribute that would play tracks from Montrose (Rock Candy, Bad Motor Scooter), Sammy Hagar solo (Red, Crusin & Boozin, I can't drive 55, "One Shot, hey, Mas Tequila, two shots, hey, hey . . . ") and Van Hagar (Why Can't this Be Love, Right Now). I know, I'm rambling -- at least you have the luxury of scrolling by instead of tuning me out.

Message: Hey Lyman, Thanks for the memories, I had totally forgotten about Ray and his singing career…as I mentioned yesterday we had a super good time hanging around the Amour’s garage the summer of '58/'59. Bill Boyd & Zeke Montanez were very close buds back then gosh some nights that garage would Rock like you wouldn’t believe it. I think it had something to do with the Silver-Satan that we were sipping on… Lyman do you remember the black 4 door 1941 Packard that Ron Arias used to drive? It was lowered in the front and on the back fender it had a name, "El Dillinger". That was a car to remember… Ron & the gang loved to cruise the Wich Stand on the north end of the boulevard and the A&W on the south … We would head over to the East West gas station and pump in $0.75 or maybe $1.00 and that would be good for one round trip… hey that was when gas was $0.19 per gal. WOW! How I'd like to see that price again!
Paco mentioned something about seeing how the other side did things back then, you were either a Hodad, Sosh, Surfer or Jock… Paco & I that summer tried the Hodad thing and that worked for a little while then we tried the surfer thing and that worked a little while… The reason I say for a little while was the fact that “Doc” Duran, Howard's dad... if he ever caught us doing anything different that being a Jock well that wouldn’t fly with him for sure… Hey Paco do you have any old pictures you could put up on Paco Pics showing the surfing & the Hodad stuff and some of the old cars like El Dillinger?
Well Lyman thanks again for ringing my bell...Later Cougs.

Message: A few years back, I acquired a vinyl Lp entitled something like "Crusin 65" or "Crusin 67" The album featured top hit songs (the one I can remember off the top of my head is Rescue Me by Fontella Bass) bumpered by radio DJ banter. The album happened to use KHJ and at one point they take a call from a girl from Hawthorne. Unfortunately, I lost the Lp in the "March Miracle" flood we had a few years ago. It would be fun to determine if anyone at CT knew who the girl was.
Speaking of KHJ, I recently acquired a number of "album frames" from Restoration Hardware that allow you to take old vinyl album covers and frame them as art work. Among the albums I framed is one called "KHJ Sound of the Sixties" which happens to be the very first Lp that I ever owned. The artwork consists of cement footprints (ala Graumann's Chinese) of KHJ DJ's like Shadoe Stevens and Humble Harve. Inside is an game where you roll the dice to visit LA attractions. The album actually is a two record set that features such classics as Harper Valley PTA, Pushin Too Hard, Feelin Groovy, Kind of a Drag and House of the Risin Sun.
I understand that there is a website (somelike BossRadio.com) devoted to KHJ and its progeny. Another book by Ben Fong Torres called "And the Hits Just Keep on Comin" devotes a few chapters to Boss Radio. It does capture that great era where "narrow casting" had not taken over the airwaves and "Top 40" radio was truly diverse -- pop, rock, R&B and country songs all being played without regard for "genre"
OK John, you can go back to work now.

Message: Rene and Ray released "Queen Of My Heart" on the Donna label, out of Los Angeles, in May, 1962. Rene was Pablo Venezuela of Glendora, and Ray was Ray Quinones. The song writing credits go to both, but the song is a take off on Jesse Belvin's "The Girl Of My Dreams", recorded by numerous doo wop vocal groups in the L.A. area during the mid to late '50's. Ray Quinones also released a song, "So Dearly" on the Donna label as Rosie & Ron. Enough doo wop history, is this the same Ray Quinones that was a Cougar? Oh, John, there was a Ray & Rene, but they recorded all of their records in Spanish.
There you have it folks, and this from the Duke of Doo Wop, the Guru of Oldies, John Rout. If John says it, It's the WORD. Thanks John....

I had always thought that it would be fun to find all of the girl scouts and have a reunion, Jeannie Blevins and I got together last year and I had kept up with Carol Misik(?) for quite a while but lost track of her 20 years ago. Carol's mother was the scout leader, one heck of a nice lady, I believe the last time I heard she was living in Oregon. If you go to Paco's pictures you will find a picture of me and my son on the cruise we were on last weekend, it is amazing what 40 years will do to a girl, at least I can say that I am now twice the woman I was back in high school. Donna Smith lived right across the street from me, I spent a lot of time at her house, I saw her at the '62 reunion but haven't seen her since.

We called Ray Quinones (Spider) he was a tall skinny kid…I think your right he was in the class of 1960 I’ll look tonight when I get home not too sure about Renae… Ray (aka) Spider used to hang around Bill Boyd who lived on 121st around the 4800 block just down the street from Dave Amour class of 1960 and Martha Amour class of 1962.
Dave Amour, Bill Boyd, Spider, Ron Arias & myself used to spend a lot of time in the Amour's garage playing our guitars and singing our brains out during the summer of 1959…Most of the summer in 1959 I worked on cutting the top off Dave Amour's '29 Ford…”O” that was fun! We never did get the darn thing running but we sure had fun trying…and the song that Ray liked to sing that summer was “Cherry Pie” Bill & Ray would really get into it. well that's it for now!! Cherry Cherry Pie O so good mmm mmm

I think that he would have been in the class of 60, I am not sure about the year but If I remember correctly Ray recorded a song called 'Queen of my heart'. It was a pretty good song and was popular down there for awhile. I think that he recorded it with his Brother Renae. Do you know anything about that? It would be nice to hear it again, so if you can check it out or if anyone knows about it, lets get it on the web site. Russ I was too embarrassed to say much about my Dawgs after they disgraced themselves on national television. Every one of them had two left feet that day.
Take care all of you Cougars.
Hey Lyman, Go to http://www.james-creative.com/f5-s08.htm and see if that's the song you're looking for. I don't remember Ray, nor can I find his picture.
