Message: More on Dr. George -- I think he does now spend most of his time back home in Albuquerque. His daughter in law and grandkids could still live in the valley. I think it was back in '78 when his son died in that shooting accident. I remember how he used to show up every weekday for the afternoon weather briefing at the old weather service office on Wilshire. He was the only LA TV weatherman to do that, and he would scratch down notes on what the forecasters were saying. He would xerox copies of the 12, 24, 36, and 48-hour forecast map for the upper levels (what we called the 500 mb LFM prog) and then color in the jet stream at the 5700 m level. Then he'd show it on the news at 5 and 6. He was way ahead of his time - while the other TV weathermen were just showing drawings of clouds and happy sunshine faces, Dr. George was educating us with 500 millibar maps. My favorite story about Dr. George was the time in the 80's when all the TV weathermen but him were saying it was going to rain on New Year's Day. A few days before New Year's, he pointed to a storm way out in the Pacific on satellite picture and said "now here's the storm all those east coast weather companies are saying is going to hit us on New Years's Day. But the National Weather Service says it's going to be beautiful, so don't you worry." We had Chamber of Commerce weather - sunny and in the high 70's.
Speaking of weather, here's one from this morning.

Message: Maybe someone can tell me if the following will actually work. I got an e-mail that said in order to stop a virus from attaching to your address book and infecting all of your contacts, you can add a contact "0000" nothing more, the virus wants to send all contacts in your book an e-mail with itself attached, if this happens you will get an error message that it was unable to find the 0000 then you can delete it and not infect your friends. I guess that you will still have it, but you can save your friends the trouble. Cindy Colby

Message: Ouch-I got the goner virus today. Not a fun virus either. Computer going back in the shop tomorrow to see if we can get rid of the little puppy. It wiped my Norton Anti-Virus right off my computer and has corrupted some files.. I thought I was protected as I update my definitions weekly but this was sent by a friend who had NO idea she was sending it to me and like an idiot, I opened it. It attached to her Outlook address book. Folks, I highly endorse Eudora E-Mail Client ( I have used it for years). You would think with all Bill Gates knowledge he would have figured out how to protect his customers. His Outlook E-Mail client is the worse. This "Worm" is nasty and is far worse than the Love Bug Virus. I'm totally disgusted that I even opened this doggone thing. I had scanned with Norton and it stated it was "Virus Free"...If you receive this attachment gone.scr do not open. I don't care if Aunt Mabel sent it..Don't open it. Do yourself a favor and invest in Eudora!!!!
I've used Eudora Light for years and have never encountered a Eudora based virus.

The Christmas I remember the best seems to be my freshman year. When I was four my mother got rid of our television and my freshman year was the one that my OLDEST brother Tom bought "Mom and Dad" a colored RCA television for Christmas. That was pretty great!! This wasn't the best Christmas ever, but definitely very memorable.

Message: I too have a Christmas memory. Way back when, I think I was a Junior, a boyfriend and I had broken up, and it broke my heart. So, I handled it the way a mature 16 year old handles such things, I got drunk. My drink of choice was Schultz Malt liquor, you know the one with the Bull on the can. Anyhow, I think I drank 1 tall can, maybe 1 1/2. I came home, Mom and Dad were in bed, I noticed Mom had put up the Christmas tree, it was so pretty, with all the lights, and a spinning wheel. I started to focus a little too long on that spinning wheel, and felt sick. With nowhere to go, I got sick near the tree, as I was collecting myself, I knocked the tree down. Well, imagine my dilemma. So, I cleaned the carpet, and put the tree back together. Fortunately, Mom and Dad were heavy sleepers, so I dont think they ever knew. They know now. Happy Holidays.

Message: Jill McFarlane and Cindy Colby - the Baldwin Hills dam broke on December 14, 1963. I was 8 and my family was visiting my grandparents in Illinois and Iowa for Christmas. I remember seeing it on the evening news. Recalling my geology classes, Baldwin Hills is a salt dome like Signal Hill. The pumping of oil in the area caused the ground to subside which eventually led to the dam collapse. In the 1970's, my hero Dr. George Fishbeck did a series of 1/2 hour specials for KABC called "Disasters - How and Why" and one of them was on the Baldwin Hills Dam failure. There was some great footage of the collapse because they knew it was coming hours in advance. An evacuation was conducted and fortunately only 5 people were killed. The oil well with red christmas lights was closer to La Brea, just to the south of the old Baldwin Hills reservoir. For quite a while after the dam failure you could park along La Brea and walk over to the edge of the reservoir and see this huge "V" crack all the way down the dam. The former director in my office (Hydrology) at Weather Service Headquarters was Dr. Danny Fread - who is the foremost U.S. expert on the modeling of dam failures, so I used to get lots of stories from him. Maybe in a future posting I can tell the story about how we almost lost Glen Canyon Dam in 1983. If Alan Nelson was in Parker back then he probably remembers the 83 flood.

Message: My father was a big man, a strong man and a handsome man. To many young men who came courting one of his five daughters, he was a formidable man. He was also a man who never turned down a good time or good scotch. Every Christmas my mother decorated a fresh tree with her beautiful glass ornaments and meticulously placed the tinsel on every branch, one at a time. It shimmered beautifully. Dad bought boxes of lobster, crab, shrimp and scallops every year for our traditional open house on Christmas Eve. The bar was always well stocked and all the neighbors came, The Curries, The Considines, The Spenskos, as well as the aunts and uncles. One year while dad and Jim Currie were singing along with Coco Sanchez, I came through the front door with a new boy, who shall remain nameless. I could see instantly that the two men were feeling no pain. Dad’s eyes were floating in his head and he was grinning like he knew some delicious secret. When his eyes focused enough to see that I was about to introduce him to a potential suitor, his smile faded and he got very serious. Dad never wanted a young man to feel too comfortable around him, at least not until he proved his mettle. My father stood as I began the introductions. The room must have tilted a bit to the right because my dad began to lean to the left. He leaned a little more and a little more until his right foot came up off the floor. In slow motion, like a giant redwood falling in the forest, he went down. He went crashing into the Christmas tree and landed on top of it shattering mom’s ornaments and sending tinsel flying in all directions. A sister screamed, the dog howled and my mother, well, my mother had a look on her face that I’ve yet to see again in 30 years. Had I had a camera handy that night I would have captured the moment for Paco’s Christmas Album, but I’m afraid I was empty handed. Merry Christmas everyone. Dizzy Lizzy,
Sounds like another Happy Hawthorne Christmas to me.......

Message: John, what a great picture. Could you blow it up and send one to me? I would love to frame it. I like stuff like that. As for the 2002 reunion, we should find out who organized the 20th. I am game for a reunion since I have become reacquainted with old classmates through this webpage, of course the class of 77 participating in CT probably consist of 4 people as opposed to ALL the people from earlier classes, of course back then, Hawthorne was not as populated in the early 60's as it was in the 70's so probably the entire class of the 60's participate on CT. Sorry for the rambling, but I have not been able to participate a whole lot lately, been busy.
Jill, I think you'll find there're lots of 77 people reading the Feedback. If you email all of your classmates and ask them to let their friends know, you'll have a good nucleus for a reunion.
I would send you the picture but your email address is not on the Feedback.

Message: I too remember that Christmas Tree on La Cienega, but I believe it was Baldwin Hills, not Ladera Heights. My grandma use to live off of Coliseum and whenever we use to go to her house we would look forward to seeing that bright red christmas tree. Speaking of Baldwin Hills, anyone remember the dam breaking, and flooding the Fedco on the corner of Rodeo and La Cienega? I am not sure of the date or year, but I do remember a friends grandmother was shopping in Fedco when it happened. Didn't Hawthorne also decorate the water tower near Hawthorne Blvd.?
Don't remember what year of the flood, but do remember it.
