Message: I lived in Hawthorne from 1959 to 1963. Although I never attended Hawthorne High - I was too young - I did start my school years at Juan Cabrillo. I have never been back to Hawthorne or LA since we moved but my memories are strong and beautiful. I don't think there could have been a more idyllic place to be as a child. I lived on Glassgow Place, right beside the freeway, which was being built while we lived there. My friends and I would wander the neighborhood, free and safe, hitting the playgrounds, ballfields, and the freeway in the late afternoon once the construction workers had left. I remember these things: surfers pedaling to the beach with their surfboards in the early summer mornings; the sounds from the pony league ball field up the street wafting through my bedroom window, lulling me to sleep; the public pool filled end to end with screaming, bobbing kids; the invention of the skateboard, which I swear I witnessed one weekday afternoon in 1960 on my street, when one of the big kids took apart his wooden scooter, throwing away the fruit crate that held the handles, leaving only the base - a two by four with skates nailed to the bottom. Everyone had one soon after that, except for me; being at a drive-in one saturday afternoon with my family and having high-schoolers beside our station wagon in their "unsafe at any speed" corvair, "horsing around" as my dad said, disapprovingly; singing "Surfing Safari" with the other third graders in the playground; playing handball with enormous red rubber balls against garage doors at home and against 12 foot high wooden walls in the schoolyard; the weather; the beach; the never ending blue skies, etc. etc. Feeling a bit nostalgic at the moment for a glimpse of LA from long ago, I was looking around on the internet and found your site. It is a window on the past, beautifully done. Thanks.
Your recollections of Hawthorne in the 60's mirror mine to the letter. OH, and about that new 405 freeway being built at that time?.........Like me, it's now old, and past its prime. Thanks for the memories, Don.........

Message: getting back to the story that I left off back in late May........I was waiting for my buddy behind the church sign loaded with ammunition of "Eggs" waitn' for my reinforcement to arrive. The sun was now coming up and I felt my partner either gotten ambushed by his mother or lost his way thur the jungles of Hawthorne. Soon it was full daylight and I felt a surprised attack was out of the question for the day. I discarded my "Eggs" behind the sign as proof that I had been there waitin. By high noon I called the other fort(friend "Mike") to see if he was alive and lo and behold he was! Many question sprang up as to his whereabout but he kept me a running guessing. He finnally admitted that he went awol......sleeping in his nice Warm bunk while I tread the danger of getting caught with loaded eggs. So, mission was unsucessful.......no more mission after that since it was a total failure..... Speaking of failure, my computer crashed completely on June 1st and I lost EVERYTHING except for the actual stuff. I had everything redone but the network doesn't reconized my modem so it's back to the drawing board. How frustrating!!!!! Lisa "Flood" Dickerson is our newest member of the "Great Northwest" resident. She moved to Federal Way, Wa which is only a 2 and 1/2 hours drive from Portland. She has been a looong friend of the family and she moved from Carson, CA. My high school sweetheart was there to visit so it was grand fun to see them both and it amazes me that time has not change from 1981 as we giggles and kid each other. Miss my gang! My ex girlfriend Debbie "Pregler" Garcia is looking for ventures to move north too. Linda, you brat! You went to Hawaii without me. How could you? Get on my butt and to get me to your reunion next summer so I can make up for missing mine. Marlene Olsen, you look great in the photo albums. Makes me regret not come there. But, family comes first but dang, you guys are as close as family in many ways! Well, hope to see ya'al in October!
Thanks Ray

Message: A GREAT BIG HUG TO THE REUNION COMMITTEE! I have not had that much fun in years. Stick & Stein was great, broke the ice and made for really fun reunion. As I said to many, it's like 30 years have gone by, we have not talked to some of our best friends, but it was like a time warp. Picked up right where we left off. Fun was had by all and lots of hugs and love for one another was given and received. Please, let's not wait so long. Thanks again. Dw
PS Mike, was looking for you too, didn't think you would remember me. Rick, Thanks for organizing our group and keeping us going. deb

Message: I'm really getting excited about the Class of 1966 reunion on Friday night and the prom on Saturday. I've got my dancing shoes shined, my beehive sprayed, my petticoats starched, and my flask cleaned and shined. I've been brushing up on my doo-wop and surf songs. My hully-gully is a little rusty. I seem to have more gully than hully these days. I can't find my Saint Christopher medal, but I plan on bringing plenty of dental floss and bubble gum pink nail polish, just in case my date gives me his class ring while we're slow dancing or smooching on the terrace. You guys out there, we gals are wise to those shiny patten leather wing tip shoes. So don't try any of that stuff. Got to go now and help my honey find his harachi sandals and baggies. Looking forward to meeting many new friends at the prom. Can't wait to meet Doris Donaldson.
Sounds great Sharon, we'll see you there.

Message: Back in 1950 when we first moved to 121st street in Hawthorne we had a mailman by the name of Rocco. He was a wonderful person. One day we had a new mailman so I asked, "what happened to Rocco?" The new guy told me that Rocco went and opened up an Italian delicatessen. Several years later we moved south to 138th street and I saw a place called Rocco's at 137th. In those days we always went north to shop in Inglewood and I never explored the south end of Hawthorne. So one day my husband and I went in and sure enough, there was Rocco standing behind the counter. I tell this story because the world is very small and I know that on Saturday's PROM we will have lots of "Small World Stories" to tell. Look for the old lady in blue!
Thanks Regina, we'll see you there.

Message: Kudos to Paul Crotty and company for a great job in putting together the multi-year reunion! This was the first reunion I had attended and it was a blast! I have to admit, on Friday night at Stick & Stein's I was a little nervous about how well my memory would serve me. After an hour or so I was very comfortable and wondered why I didn't go to the 10 or 20 year reunion. Everyone looked great, even after thirty years. My wife and myself came away with many wonderful memories to have for years to come. Thanks again to all and take care.
See Cougs, It's fun and easy to reacquaint with your school friends and believe me, initially they are just as worried as you are about remembering faces, but it only takes a few minutes and you're back in high school again. Thanks Al

Message: I haven't seen any mention of the Beach Boys. They are a good part of HHS history, mine as well. I won't name names, but one of the Beach Boys taught my mother, Lynda Ruppe and her cousin Hesse Martin, how to drive. The song "Til Her Daddy takes her T-Bird Away" was written about our cousin Hesse. She was from a well-to-do family and owned a beaut of a T-Bird, she was extremely mischievous, sort of wild I guess, so her dad, Robert Martin, took her T-bird away....
I remember all the talk about the A&W Rootbeer Stand on 118th and Hawthorne Blvd...The beautiful old cars, everybody hangin out in the parking lot smokin' cigarettes and talkin about who won the last street race, what they did on Sat night and with whom. Sounds like good times. My mother married in 66', gave birth to her first child (Leroy Derwood Hough, Jr.), therefore was unable to graduate in 68. If anyone remembers any one of my family members, please contact me at 213 949-4262. Thank You and God Bless. (Oh, my aunt Shannon Ruppe graduated in 66 or so)

Had to be Dennis Wilson,
and if I knew Dennis, his intention wasn't to teach your mom and her cousin to drive.
Wasn't one of the Hough boys killed on a motorcycle in Mexico?
And see now everyone thought that Hessie McKnight HHS62 was THE "Hessie". Also, the A&W was on 136th and Hawthorne Bl. We were talking about street racin all right, and I guess a few of us smoked too. Thanks Margie for the story.

Yes, John, I left a whole host of people off of my "I-can't-wait-to-meet" list, but doubt that I'll be meeting either Felderruster or the Ding Dongs ... has anyone noticed lately that some of our lady CTers have been picking up the Lamma girls expressions? Can't remember who, but one lady used "lammalamma" somewhere in her post and another used "owie" or "bow wow" or something like that. Do you suppose John ... could it be possible, these three "ghosts" are a whole lot of people combined??!! Oh well, maybe they will all be at the PROM and all will be revealed. In the meantime, a week from tonight, just about this hour, we ought to be having a rip-roaring-good-time! Thanks again to everyone who facilitated this party of all parties!!!!

That was at 13, now when we all were 16, well maybe we should not touch that!! Life was so sweet and uncomplicated in those early teen years for all of us. You still have that sweet guy thing going and in many ways John you have not changed. You will always be one of my favorite people.
