Message: Hello Yuri,
I responded to your note immediately concerning the new principal of Hawthorne High School. The note was returned with an address that could not be delivered. So now I must go public to find out if you sent it, and if, in fact, it is true. If this is a new position for you, I will take time to list all of the positive experiences that we had in service as Knights at HHS. You know that you were always special, but few know how special you really are. Sincerely, Bob

Hi Bob, It seems as though this is a hoax. Sherrie Wingo checked with HHS and no one has been interviewed for Principal as of yet.

Message: Dear Walter:
I just wanted to take the opportunity to tell you how very sad we are for you for the loss of your Sarah. Nothing we can say or do will lessen your pain on this day or for many of them to come but I am hopeful that the caring of your HHS friends will give you hope.
This type of tragedy and loss is so swift and shocking that it can take much time to recover. As my dear mom discovered and shared with me after the loss of my dad, it was not until she realized how fortunate she was to have had him in her life for as long as she did that she learned not to lament that she did not have him long enough. Keep her in your heart Walter, and you will never have lost her at all.

Well said, Sue.....

Message: All, with heavy heart I regret to inform you of the passing of Ray Kinnaman, age 53, class of 66. Ray left us on Friday, June 22, 2001, in Jasper, Arkansas. Those of you who remember Ray recall his energy, daily witticisms, love of music (mainly guitar), and his uncanny ability to stay calm in the face of most crises. I had the honor of knowing Ray for the past 35+ years. We were ‘buddies’ when we were younger and had a lot of common interests, cars, girls, music, girls, a knack for getting in trouble, girls, etc.
Ray is survived by his daughter, Robin, of Lomita, CA.
I hope some of you will post a few memories so Robin can learn more about her dad’s early years.
Thanks, John McDonald , Class of '66

Sorry for your loss, John. This has been a sad, sad day.

Message: Fellow Cougars... As some of you read in the newspaper, On Sunday July 1 Myself, My Fiancée Sarah, My Daughter Rachel & Sarah's Daughter Desiree were involved in a head on collision on Highway 79 South of Temecula, Ca. The children & myself as well as the people in the other vehicle received minor to moderate injuries. Sarah, as some of you met at Cruise Night & Pinks, was killed on impact. Her funeral service is today at the Mission Basilica San Juan Capistrano & is being laid to rest at The Good Shepherd Cemetery in Huntington Beach. She was a loving mother to her children, A caring person to all that had the pleasure of knowing her, and someone my life will forever feel an immense loss without. May she rest in peace with God & forgive me for my part in being the cause of her death.
Walter, We're very sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how you feel, but sure Sarah knows it was an accident; one of lifes tradegies. Take care and please know our prayers and thoughts go with you and Sarah today.

Message: Just love this site. Gotta check "feedback" or my day isn't complete. With all the talk about the Beach Boys the news is reporting that Al Jardine is sueing the others a hefty sum for not including him in concerts, and billing themselves as "the original" Beach Boys. We all know Al is an "original" Beach Boy as well, and it is too bad he had to go to these lengths to get it straightened out. Al's group sounds like the one to go see. On a lighter note, I am off to Scottsdale, AZ (I must need my head examined) to celebrate Phyllis Welch Charlton's (class of '59) 35th wedding anniversary with her husband Ron, and a visit with Mike Hunter. Seems like the older we get the more valued old friendships become. Well, it's off to pack.

Message: Hello everyone. A reminder to the Class of '66. Our reunion is August 17, 2001 at the Manhattan Beach Marriott. Please make reservations in advance. The reunion company helping us is asking that people not wait till the last minute. There will be tickets at the door, but they are very limited. If you wait till the night of the event, you may not get a dinner, or worse you may not get in. So please make your reservations in advance. If you have any questions, please call Sharon Moore Leach toll-free at (866) 574-7763. Don't miss this one. We haven't had a reunion in 10 years, and who knows when the next one will be. See you there!
Same goes for Prom Night folks. Please order your tickets now so you can be in on all the Reunion and Prom stuff for the evening. Little things like food, badges, door prizes, seating, etc. are compromised when you haven't signed up early. It's easier on your Reunion/Prom committee and you, when you do it beforehand. Thanks Sharon....

Message: Just a quick tribute to the 'other' original Beachboys, Mike Love and Al Jardine. Not to take anything away from Brian, Dennis or Carl. I just think these two great musicians are getting unfairly overshadowed by Brian's talent in composition and arrangement. "Komomo" and "Still Cruising After All These Years" (to my knowledge composed and produced without Brian's help) are the best Beachboys tunes since "Pet Sounds". Having a tribute to Brian without these artists present is a pretty cold shoulder. Thanks, Mike and Al, you make Hawthorne proud!
True.....well, at least Al makes Hawthorne proud. Mike actually makes Dorsey proud.
I do agree that Kokomo was a great BB hit and credit for that one has to go to Mike.

Message: When I first walked onto the HHS campus as a lowly freshman in 1958, Dean Stafford was the first "Big Man on Campus" that I remember seeing. He looked like something out of a Hollywood movie with his "all American" good looks and larger than life presence. But most of all, I remember his tremendous smile. I think I had dreams of just running into him in the halls in that letterman sweater! Oh well, confessions of a simpler time! Peace Dean. JB2

Message: Hello early '60's folks, Back in '61 one night three of us pulled into the Texaco station across from the school to get .50 of Ethyl. I had Danny Kieffer and Gene Gutierrez in my '40 Ford coupe with me. After checking the oil and water I heard someone yelling at us to get the h--- out of the station. He was on the other side of the station by the phone booth. He was drunk and just continued to yell at us. I got into the car just as he came our way when Danny said "that's so and so(?) who's the baddest guy at Hawthorne". I just couldn't leave (stupid pride) so I got back out of the car and checked my water again with my back turned to Mr Bad. Meanwhile, Danny locked both doors, so there I was with Mr. Bad. When I didn't take off like a scared rabbit he just stopped yelling, stood back a ways, and didn't do anything! I got back into the car and slowly drove out onto El Segundo. So John, who was this "Mr. Bad"? Does anyone remember when someone threw a cherry bomb in the school dance back in '60? I've been talking to Judy DeGrazia about the old neighborhood. Really been good for me. Also, because of this list I was able to contact Alan Hauge which I haven't seen since 1963. Thanks John for the fun memories. Lanny Harris/Jim Raines

Message: How come when you take a one-week vacation, you’re three weeks behind when you get back. Feeling like my head is temporarily above water, I’ll take a moment to thank some fellow cougs for one heck of a great time on our recent visit to Southern Cal. From the time James (Stardust) Schroeder (66) took center stage Thursday night to crack up a receptive audience, through Fridays 24 Coug Hawaiian shirt golf tourney, to Saturday’s backyard shoe-in, miles of smiles were had by all. Thanks to my golfing partners Pat Beckett (66) Dennis Higgins (67) and Captain Woody McCain (67) for their patience and ball searching abilities. Although I was a few years behind most in attendance, other than being pantsed and given the customary pink belly on the 9th green, I was treated with the hospitality and grace befitting the spawn of early Hawthorne DNA. A special thanks to Bart Graves (66) for organizing and hosting the affair and to Curt Pettlon (67) and April (you can call me Hootie any time) Flick (69) for hosting and chauffeuring my brother Timmy (Big Hoody) (67) and I along the South Coast from Manhattan to Oceanside. The warm water and good waves will long be remembered. I can’t forget my shoe partner and co-champion ($200.00 purse, sorry Bart but your second place t-shirt was really cool too) Darwin Schussler (66), and the special appearance by our 133rd Street neighbor John Abraham (66), long distance traveler from Washington D.C. Jim Sloey, what can I say, a scholar and a gentleman who knows what gigs to attend. Both days were great aye buddy, how could those CT bruts talk to you that way? And you were right about inviting the old guys (glad I didn’t say that), we got to stay up after 9 P.M. and we didn’t have to shorten the horseshoe pits. Mike Wadman (66), Joey Kennedy (71) Dave Hobart (67) Ross Bradfield (66), Jim Eakin (66), it was great to seeing you all. Sean Fitzpatrick (72), good to meet you and we saw brother Mike (70) on Monday. A surprise visit from Bill Halford (66) topped Saturdays festivities. And last but certainly not least, Lizzy, thank you my goddess for letting me have my eggs sunny side up.

Message: Man, I sure hope this gets posted on time, I have been so spaced out trying to find a house to move to, etc. I am losing it BIG time lately...anyhow, our esteemed Brian Wilson is having a TNT special on tomorrow called "An All Star Tribute to Brian Wilson" that was taped recently at Radio City Music Hall. The guests include: Elton John, Billy Joel, Carly Simon, Paul Simon, and Heart ( and they say, among others, so who knows who all showed up to give our fellow Coug a HUGE shout for a musical job well done!). I have DirecTV satellite, so it starts at 5:00 p.m. PST on that, but I've noticed that cable and satellite times don't always jive. So, check your guide for times and such. If you are going to be gone for the 4th, set up that VCR and tape this pup! It should be good ( but also, usually TNT is great for showing good stuff over more than once in a month, just keep your eyes out for it!) There, now I feel better! LOL!
