And now..for your entertainment, here's a picture Frankie Avalon and I in Maui.. & now, back to my chiropractor that's treating me for the wipe-out that we "didn't" take a picture of.. Janny's still in traction but should be fine for John Rout's Doo Wop party next weekend.

Annette and Frankie, Glad you two are home and I know you had a great time. Now it's time to get serious on the Prom tickets folks. Not much time left, so get those tickets real soon.

Message: On this Mother's Day weekend I thought it appropriate during this next week to explore a new topic. Of course, each of us is very thankful to our own wise and wonderful moms for having the good sense to raise us in Hawthorne (I love you Mom B) but I'll bet each of us has a few very special "other mothers" who were instrumental in our lives in one way or another. Two personal favorites of mine were Eloise Murray, Marilyn and Terri's mom who was a single mother long before it was commonplace and did that job with grace, dignity and courage and also dear Aunt Gerry Harrison, mother of Johnny (71), Donnie (74) and Ronnie (76) who was a mom in our 115th street hood who I recall as part of my life and family as far back as I can remember. I see and love her still for the solid friendship and genuine love she has shown to our family. There are some pretty special women out there who provided support, kindness and even shelter to kids over the years. Remember them on Mother's Day and work hard to make them proud. I know I do. We'll reserve our memories of special Dads for June.....Oh, and I love you Mom B. Thanks for always being there.
I love you too Mom B and my OTHER Mom B (Baker).
My mom was a working mom and still had time to take me to Little League games, the swimming pool, Cub and Boy Scouts, just to name a few places. I used to NOT know how she would know exactly where I was at all times, until I became a parent and learned the secret....been there, done that.
My favorite OTHER Mom was Bob Reagan's Mom, Lee Reagan. She was actually a Mom to Pat (Serra 54), Don (HHS56), Bob (HHS62), and Jolene Reagan, but she always had time for all the friends of the kids she owned. She's still going strong at 80 something, and living in Rowland Heights, CA. So Lee, Happy Mothers Day; I love you too.

Also remember when your older brother Ted would take you, Gary, Fred Ragatz, Jim Reale, and me over to Inglewood High and El Camino to practice our track events. I remember when I beat Jim in the 100 yd dash and your brother Ted would kid me and say, no way. Its always good to read the feedback here at CT and good to see the pictures. Russ it was good to see the pictures of you and your wife at cruise night, also Jim Wests and Tim Lutz. You all look pretty good for your age. J.B. thanks for this website.
Take care all of you Cougars.

You beat Jim Reale in the 100? I guess it's true, "The older we get, the better we were". That must've been when he had the broken leg.

We (Cougars) have made something of ourselves. Yes this site is still going and will continue forever. Not like the Normans. Never to be seen again. You are always welcome to visit our site, for I'm sure the Normans could have never been so creative. If you are an example of a Beverly Hills Graduate, then I'm glad that I graduated from Hawthorne High School, home of the Cougars! Please come back in June and we will crush you like John's cartoon! On second hand, why don't you come to Pinks, since it's right around the corner from you. I'm sure some cougars would like to beat, (oops) I mean meet you. I guess being born with a silver spoon in your mouth, you haven't yet learned what true friendship is all about. Have a nice weekend Cougs!

I guess it was. :) But you confirmed that I wasn't completely senile as you remembered many of the same things as I. I thought all these years that I was one of the only people who remembered High School or even cared about the people, places , events that took place. I will say 10 hail oogachaka's because I'm so happy. John Baker started it, that people cared, the COUGS at the reunion and cruise night and other functions confirmed it. Now Bobby, tell us some of your "fun" stories. Like, Jake wasn't the only one who drank beer or did stupid stuff. Good to hear from you Bobby. By the way Baker, I know how to get Sloey to the Pinks run!!! Park an ambulance out front with it's light's and siren on! He'll be there. Harry Plotkin, Where are you? MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. My friend, Laree (Meeks) Blauert and I used to go to the Snack Bar almost everyday at lunchtime for apple crisp a'la mode'! The BEST I've EVER had! MMMmm! Makes me hungry just to think of it! When we didn't do that, we would hustle home (either her's or mine) and have saltine crackers with butter and pepper ... and milk, of course; or we would have lettuce sandwiches. Two pieces of bread, mayonnaise (Miracle Whip as I recall) and lettuce ... and milk, of course! And we would ALWAYS see the latest movie at ... shoot! What did they call that place? Nyman Hall ... was it Nyman Hall? The movie would play for 20 or 30 minutes and go 4 days a week, I think. That's why we ate like we did ... so we could go to the movies!

Message: For Polly, many of us share your sentiments about CT. It has provided a way to contact long lost friends.
As for the cafeteria, it was really a big deal when it was new. The ladies who worked there were all someone's mom. Mrs. Plaster was the head lady (her son Bill graduated before I got there), Mrs. Cooper (Bill '55 and Peggy '59) was loved by everyone and she happened to be my girl scout leader, too. Mrs. Ashby (Penny and Janet), and Mrs. Adams (her 4 kids, Carol, Joe, Tony, and Bobby went to Leuzinger but the kids from the Ramona neighborhood knew them well.) Previously we had "snack bars" where all I can remember being able to buy were tamales with beans and very dry hamburgers. No soda either--either milk or chocolate milk. At the new cafeteria the "moms" made delicious lunches. I don't remember any complaints. Leaving campus for lunch was rare as few of us had cars. My friend Linda Burgin and I talked our parents into signing the form for the lunch pass and we would go to Taco Tio on Hawthorne Blvd., or to a hamburger stand in Inglewood on Century Blvd.
Could that have been "Ah Ha's"? Once we even made it up and back to the Big "O" donut shop.
I share Polly's interest in cars, too. I am sure there are a lot of female car enthusiasts among our alumni. My two most noteworthy cars were a '56 Chevy 210 that I got in 1960 and didn't sell until 1975. We also bought a new 1966 red Mustang that our two daughters each drove as their first car. I finally sold it two years ago as it was relegated to just being parked in the driveway.
John, I am helping look for Bill Plaster. He was Superintendent of Schools in Fountain Valley about 25 years ago and then went to Upland in the same position. Maybe some other Cougs have crossed his path and didn't know what prestigious connections he had! Hopefully, someone knows his whereabouts, but I will let you know if I find out more. See you at Prom Night.

Hi Maurine, I guess I should inform you all. Thanks to Denny Unfried for the info on George Green. Gerald Schweitzer was found on the Central CA coast, and thanks to Diane Lay Smith for info on her cousin Bill Plaster who's located in Orange Co.
See Cougs, all you have to do is ask. There's someone out there who knows the answer.
Also for at least one year I remember Mrs. Shelley worked in the cafeteria and was the mother of Ray HHS58, Tom HHS62 and Dennis HHS67

Message: Just a quick Howdy, and to let everybody know that this is the greatest site! I have lately heard from some dear friends that, I have lost contact with in the last 20+ years. These contacts made my day. Debbi Cooley Levy, Debbie Corwin Fisher, Rhonda LeBlanc, and Lora Maynard. It really is nice to rekindle old friendships.
What is this about a new cafeteria at Hawthorne High? My only memories of the old one was the wall paper paste mashed potatoes, and the horrible stuff they called chili. Also, being chased around by the guy who thought he was a Vampire, during my Freshman year. After that I got smart and started going to Taco Bell. By the way Taco Bell is no longer there, it is now a check cashing place.
All I can say was High School, was a very strange time in my life. The only thing that saved the whole experience was the very dear and wonderful friends that I had made back then.
FYI, for the car nuts my first car after High School was a fire engine red 67' Camaro, RS with a 350+ bored out engine, black leather interior. My buddie's nick named it "Reggie," or the "The Reggiemobil." If that car could talk....all I can say about it all, that it was really fun car.. I only paid $900.00 for it back in 1974. Try to match that today. I worked almost six months for that money, and it was worth it.
Everyone, have a great Mother's Day!
Polly

Thanks Polly, sounds like a great car.
