Message: THANKS FOR THE RESPONSE TO MY QUESTION TO JERRY R. BTW, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHO THE COACH WAS THAT TAUGHT AUTO SHOP SUMMER SCHOOL IN '61? THE COACH GAVE US A DEMONSTRATION ON HOW TO GRIND VALVES ON THE MACHINE. HE TURNED TO THIS KID AND GAVE HIM A VALVE AND TOLD HIM TO GRIND IT. A LITTLE WHILE LATER THE KID RETURNED WITH A BEAUTIFULLY GROUND VALVE THAT HE CAREFULLY DID ON THE BENCH GRINDER! YOU SHOULD HAVE HEARD THE COACH! I FELT SORRY FOR THAT KID. COULD THAT KID BE ON THIS WEB SITE? MY FIRST CAR I BOUGHT FOR $75. WHILE I WAS STILL 15. IT WAS A METALIC, BLUE '51 CHEVY WITH ITS ORIGINAL 6 CYLINDER ENGINE WHICH WE CALLED A SIX BANGER. SO JUST TO BE CUTE (STUPID) I PAINTED "SEX BANGER" ON THE TWO BACK FENDERS, AND THEN OUT TO CRUISE THE BLVD. AND THE A&W. ANYONE REMEMBER?
The autoshop teacher/coach was Coach Halladay, the Cee football coach at that time.

Message: Thought this information might be interesting to all. Hawthorne High has come a long way since her beginning in the early 50?s: from the days of eight buildings, unpaved walks, no athletic field, no cafeteria and no library.
Those were the ?good old days? of Hawthorne, when all students shared the same gym, spent practically all of their lunch period standing in the long, twisting line to the snack bar, and waded through the washed-out walks on rainy days.
But, of course, what the school lacked for in physical attributes and luxuries, was made up for many other ways. The football squad of 1954 took the Pioneer League title. In 1958, HHS athletes came home with first honors in four varsity sports.
During every year HHS continued to expand and build. In 1953 the student enrollment record was broken with a startling number of 950 students. The following year, the groundbreaking ceremony took place for the new gym, and the graduation class organized the first Alumni Club.
The year 1957 was a busy year for new additions, when new cafeteria, girls? gym, and other new buildings were completed. HalCap Field early in the 1960-61 school year was finally graced with the long-awaited stadium lights, and in 1962 the first varsity football game was played on our own field. HHS where Lima beans and weeds once thrived.
Great stuff Bob, thanks.....

I can remember, and have pictures (somewhere?) to prove it, that it was almost over the top of our boots at the corner of Eucalyptus and Broadway. It was so bad, that Chaney's Dept Store had flooded; the reason I remember that is because my Mother bought all kinds of towels that had gotten wet from the flood. I seem to remember only those two situations, however. Does anyone remember anything else?
That part of Hawthorne Bl flooded badly. This is a picture taken in the mid to late 30's of the same area.

Back in '57 or '58 Danny Kieffer (my cousin) and I with a few other kids used to climb up on some building near the NW corner of either El Segundo and Hawthorne Blvd or Broadway and Hawthorne to look down through the skylight, directly over an art class. It was the first time either of us had ever seen a naked lady. Do you have any idea what building that might have been? BTW, I lived on 118th st. about five houses east of Felton. The kids that lived around me were Gene Gutierrez, David Winkley and across the street, the Trott sisters. Across Felton to the west was Bob Fox. I lived with my Grandparents and two Uncles, Roy and Shelby Clonts. Does anyone remember this neighborhood and the kids?
Maybe the Masonic lodge on the NW corner of Grevillea and Broadway?

Message: Been reading about the web site situation. I have been designing sites now for about 6 years to give me something to do (and to make a great side income). I know how a site can cost to maintain. It isn't really the money as much as the time of the person updating (which is worth money!). That is why banners are available. As much as John always said NO banners or advertising, I foresaw the time when this may get out of hand. The idea of the membership money is the best way to keep it "in house) and with no outside advertisers. But, with banners and outside advertising, a great deal of money can be generated. Hobbies sometime turn into business. I did my first 3 or 4 sites for free. Now I get $2,000+ a site. So, I'm sure eveyone wants to keep CT up and running and hopefully everyone will send in their dues. Just think, I finally did. John if you are looking for a server that can handle this site the guy I use is great (he is in Riverside). Just tell me and I'll see what he can do. I need to know what your costs are to your server.
Hey Keith, Thanks for the membership first of all, and the nice letter too. Not sure yet if we need to go banner ads, but everything's a consideration. My server people, I'm happy with so far. We'll see where we have to go in a week or so. Thanks Keith for adding your thoughts.

John I look forward to the meeting / brainstorming session after I get back from Maui, maybe we should do a retreat on lake Mission Viejo. I'll bet we could get some of those Cougars out there that are working in a marketing field to come out join us. What do you think?
