Message: You who, Bob Jenson.. Thanks for the backing up on the $75.00 PROM NITE ticket. Yes, we'll have a buffet style dinner..and lots of prizes and fun.. This committee sincerely wants all that attend to leave feeling like they've just turned 17 again..only this time with brains and someone else's body.. I digress.. we could have cut corners..and scrimped here and there.. but what the hell, we deserve it!!! Beside that, how about seeing your old flame..or even finding out that he/she might still be single and having that dance that may change your life!! Perhaps a good TOMMY EDWARDS song will make it happen. (there I go again..getting excited over Tommy) Anyway.. I promise you'll love a lot more than $75.00 worth. Tomorrow we start taking money for tickets.. keep your eyes on COUGARTOWN for the info you need.. Now, back to finding just the right shade of lavender blue for my high heels.. (Leed's in Inglewood tints them free when you spend $6.95 on a plain white satin pair) and I still have to Rit dye my nylons to get that perfect shade of brown.. Judy Wudy...

Also like Doris I had Chauncey for freshman math and I too saw many football plays on the blackboard. What fun he was!

Message: You who, Judy; I was thinking, yes thinking, the other day. The value of a 1961 dollar VS a 2000 dollar is one to eight. Now I think the price of $75.00 is pretty good considering we get fed. Now in 1961 the senior class offset the cost of the prom by $600.00. They sold the Prom tickets for $3.95. In today’s world that is approximately $40.00. Back in 1961 everyone went out after the prom for dinner. Some of the fancy restaurants that received the graces of Hawthornites were Ben Blue’s, The Crescendo, The Clorister, The Plush Horse, The Islander, The Moulin Rouge, The Reef, and for those more conservative types their was Skippy’s, Foster’s and A&W. Now considering back then you would have spent at least $16.00 for dinner for two which would equate to $128.00 in today’s dollars you still have a pretty good deal for the year 2001. Now there are other costs that we have to consider. Tux rental for the guys. In 1961 you could rent a tux for $6.50, with shoes $7.50 at either The Dewdrop Tux Shop or Allan’s Men Shop on Crenshaw. I think I’ll choose the semi formal look and wear a dark suit. Dombrowski’s Flowers ran a special back in 1961 and you could buy a $5.00 orchid corsage for a student discount of $2.50. I called the number listed on the 1961 Cougar (Orchard 4-3039) and got Steve Dombrowski and I asked him how much a corsage was today. He quoted me $7.50 to $15.00 for an orchid corsage and to add $1.00 for wrist. I didn’t have the heart to ask for a student discount. Now that’s a deal. I guess flowers haven’t gone up that much in the last 40 years. Now with two bucks worth of gasoline in your father’s Oldsmobile you could have cruised La Brea all night but in today’s light it’s going to cost you at least ten bucks to drive your Astro Van from Orange County up to Manhattan Beach and back. Lets not even get into the cost of a hotel room back in 1961. Brother Bill can’t remember the cost so I guess no one was staying over bNo matter how you look at it $75.00 is a cheap price to pay for such a wonderful event. I can’t wait.
Glad you agree Bob......uhhh, I think. We'll see you there on August 18th and don't forget the tickets go on sale in the morning.

Message: Doris, thank for the comments and remembering my face. Unfortunately time has taken it's toll, More weight, less hair. Sorry I don't recall you but like you I have a good memory of faces. My journey through life took me away from Hawthorne within a very few yrs and the only HHS alumni I know and keep in touch with is my sister, Donna Balara (Mathena). She was a graduate of 64 or 65. She lives in Chino Hills and is a school teacher there. I need to tell her about cougartown. Oh, where did that pic come from and so quickly? Must be from the annual I noted was supplied by Tom Bell. Tom and I shared lockers in our senior yr. Wonder if photography is still a passion with Tom? Do we get graded on spelling here? Many computer groups over look spelling. English was my real weak suit.

Message: “STARDUST” TICKETS NOW SOLD AT STUDENT STORE As the plans progress, the senior-junior prom gets bigger and bigger. The number of students able to attend is unlimited and the tickets for the gala event are on sale now at the student store. The price is set at $3.95, which will include refreshments. A queen and king of the prom will be chosen from the seniors attending the affair. “The names of senior girls and boys will be taken at the student store when the tickets are purchased,” announces Diana Baime, senior in charge of the arrangements concerning the queen and king. Nadine Hollingsworth is in charge of the decorations. They will consist of table pieces, large three-dimensional glittering stars above the dancing areas, and blue lights to create the effect of starlight. Other surprises following the theme of “Stardust” will be revealed later. Taken from Cougar April 14, 1961 Vol. VIII no. 29

Message: Many of you know that my son, David, was killed in an automobile accident on his way back to college in 1988. I'M SO VERY SAD TO INFORM YOU THAT KRIS WADMAN LOST HIS LIFE WHILE RETURNING TO SAN DIEGO STATE UNIVERSITY YESTERDAY. He sent me an e-mail in July telling me of his plans. He just graduated from HHS in June of 2000. His brother is Kevin Wadman and his mother, Melodie Wadman, worked at Cabrillo School. For those interested, services will be held at White and Day at 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 4, 2000. It is located at Torrance Blvd. and Prospect. Melodie and Kevin - I have such overwhelming empathy for you. Much love to both of you. HCH
Very sad indeed, especially for such a young Cougar. Kris had just added himself to the list in early September. It's always shocking to lose someone so suddenly. Our condolences go out to the whole Wadman family.

Message: Just found out about Cougartown yesterday, thanks to a message from Glenn Crist (he spotted my name on classmates.com), and have I been missing out. I spent at least an hour exploring the site and what a walk down memory lane it was. Saw names and pics of classmates that I hadn't thought of for many years. Regretfully I also saw a name or two I remember in the tribute section.
Hated to see Coach Sevier's name in the tribute section but what a pleasure to see Coach Chauncey is still around and contributing to this wonderful site.
Have been living in Oregon for 30 yrs and I don't get down to South Bay area very often. I was in the area on business about 8-10 yrs ago and stopped by the school for a stroll down memory lane, unfortunately it wasn't the school I remember. I guess it just proves the old saying "you can't go back home". But with today's technology and sites like this we can rediscover and visit with friends of our youth.
I've bookmarked CougarTown and it will become one of my regular spots to visit. I would welcome a word from anyone that remembers me.
Regards, Mickey Mathena

Hi Mickey, and thanks for stopping by. Please stay in touch as more and more early Cougs are finding Cougartown. Thanks also to Glenn Crist, our resident classmates.com'er, who from time to time, gleans Cougars from Classmates who are wandering aimlessly, hoping to make a connection over there.

Message: HELLO ALL! But most particularly this is dedicated to my all-time favorite teacher, HAL CHAUNCEY ... gawd! It's been so long; hope I've spelled his name right! :-) Anyway, the story goes like this: When I was but a youngster, BEFORE high school, in the late 40's and early 50's, I had my own softball team that played in a league at Hawthorne Park, "CHANEY'S", and Mr. Chaney of Chaney's Department Store in Hawthorne sponsored us. We had all the equipment we needed and wanted and Mr. Chaney was very generous to us. Does anyone remember Hawthorne Park? I'll bet Chauncey does! He was caretaker for the park and had the softball diamonds in A-1 shape for our games. I remember him from that time like it was yesterday. When I started high school I already knew him and guess what! He was my Freshman math teacher ... I remember a lot of football plays being drawn on the blackboard; it helped me in later years to understand and enjoy football. Also learned a little math while I was at it! I got an A+. Of course, I was always President of Chauncey's fan club, but I'm sure that had nothing to do with the fine grade I received!
I took all the secretarial classes I could in my 4 years at Hawthorne and that training has served me well. In the last year or 2 years at HHS, I had a class called SECRETARIAL TRAINING and each of us in the class chose a teacher to whom we could serve as a secretary. Naturally, I chose Chauncey! It was most enjoyable, I have to admit, and I could do no wrong!! He was such a great guy, and I'm sure he still is! I look forward to seeing him at the Prom and would love to hear from him via email prior to that time if he so deems. THANKS COACH! For being such a great guy, role model and FRIEND to me ... and I'm sure that goes for all of us '57 graduates! Love ya! doris

Doris, "THE" Coach is in great shape to this day and will be one of our chaperones on Prom Night, along with his lovely wife Cathy. Thanks for remembering one of the early GREATS of HHS. The Ol' Coach is the greatest, as far as I'm concerned, and I truly believe he CAN "walk on water". Thanks Doris......

Now-update: Janny and I schlepped over to the Marriott Manhattan yesterday, to check out the site one last time.. and it's gorgeous.. lots of space..and a beautiful, huge lobby with plenty of plush seating & tables for those that want take a dance break and have a quiet place to "talk" in peace with old friends.. A full bar is just to the side of it.. we'll also have bars set up inside the ballroom & foyer. There will be plenty of food..and lots of great songs.. Now, the $64,000 questions.. my prom dress was white-as I borrowed it from my neighbor and it was her wedding dress.. do I have a bid??.. back then I could wear white proudly.. (I heard that John!!!)
