He lived around the block from me. He played football at Stanford after high school and then played a few years with the Dallas Cowboys. After that he vanished.
Hey Ed, I think someone told me his relatives are still in Hawthorne.

Message: To John Baker, Mitch Skaff was my father. That picture you posted with Liz Estrada's message sure took me back. My dad owned Centinela Cafe on Hawthorne Blvd. near El Tarasco. His buddies used to hang out there and shoot the breeze. I think your dad was one of them. For sure Ed Lutz was one of them. He was there all the time. He practically supported our family, he was such a good customer and friend. I sure would love to have a copy of that photo. I'm not computer savvy but if you could email it to me maybe someone could help me get it to a photo shop. I'd be grateful. To Liz Estrada, Your friend Joey is a nice lady and I didn't tell her any secrets. Her smile isn't from anything I did, or said. Hope all of you out there are well and happy. Jerry
Yeah, I remember the Centinela well. I loved the penny peanut machines on the bar. Your dad was a great guy and one of Hawthornes good guys. That picture was from a yearbook. I'll scan it and send it to you. My Uncle is in that same photo. Thanks Jerry

Message: Hey there Hay-towners, How goes it? 20 something years after graduation and NO I'm not still doing gymnastics. I remember lunching at Jack in the Box, heavy gymnastics training and team competitions. Football games, dances, parties and hanging out on the grass in front of the boys gym with boyfriend Brett Ely (Yes we did get married , but then divorced ten years ago). Today, after 15 years in the dental field, I'm currently a licensed childcare provider running a childcare business out of my home while in school to become a nurse practitioner. I have three children; Alyshia Ely 18, just graduated high school and entering Calvary Chapel Bible College in Murrieta in August. Brandon Ely 16, just got his drivers license and is a wrestler on his high school team at Temescal Canyon High School here in Lake Elsinore. Then there's Christopher Reynolds-Painter 5, he starts Kindergarten in August. We're the "go to church every sunday" type Christians, I even teach Sunday school and help lead the Youth drama Ministry at our chuch: Calvary Chapel Lake Elsinore. If you want to chat, e-mail me Bye.
Hey Teri, Thanks for checking in and I'm sure lots of 78ers remember you. Also glad you're a good Christian..........please pray for me.

Message: Ray Hahn! Thanks (I think) for the intelligent comment. I was so smart I dropped out of El Camino and started pumping Standard Stations Gasoline to pay for helicopter flying lessons...and got drafted before the first lesson. I had $300 saved out of the $1000 I needed in '64. So then the Army taught me for free. Intelligent, or just dumb luck? You still bowling? Remember Tropicana Lanes, You threw a bowling ball harder than anyone I have ever seen. Wonder where Sharon Wetmore is these days.

Message: KELLEY CURRIE, my husband "ES class of 57" had a jellyroll and later a french butch, thats a flat top with longer sides combed back.. The Duck tail was also call a "DA". In my day -'56- girls wore pincurls to school with a scarf wrapped around and tied in the back of the neck. The school later banned this practice except on nights before a special dance. We didn't have curling irons and blow dryers. I wore a pony tail a lot. I sure hope some "50's kids" show up at Fosters. My husband and I are coming with my old friend Jeanne Musgrave '57. Come on all you old codgers get out your canes and walkers and be there!
Marilyn, I know Richard Hansen HHS56, and Dennis Unfried HHS55 haven't missed a cruise night yet. Also "Old Tom Burroughs" HHS58 will be there too. I'm sure there'll be more too, so come on out all you 50's Cougs, as it's lots of fun.

Message: My friends & I used to walk from 139th & Hawthorne Blvd. to the UA in Inglewood, we always stopped at a drug store to have a cherry coke and fries, I think the store was on the corner of Broadway & Hawthorne Blvd. can anyone tell me the name of it. I can't remember, it's driving me nuts. LOL Russ Jacobsen, thanks for the message. If you're ever at Karcher Mall, stop by and say hi, my store is the 60 Minute Photo and Studio.

Sharon, The store was Mastins Rexall drug store and it had the BEST cherry cokes in Hawthorne. It was owned by Grant Mastin, a long time resident of Hawthorne. Click here to see a picture of Mastins as it appeared in 1949.

Message: Liz, I remember you. Yes, I was very quiet and shy in high school. That's why it amazes me that people remember me. I was so quiet I couldn't lead a group in silent prayer. Then I discover Toastmaster. Now part of my job is to do public speaking. Ed Roelen you look familiar too. I don't think it was any shop class because I am mechanically challenged so I avoided those classes. So you live in Citrus Heights. That's just a hop, skip and jump away. Seems like a lot of Cougars in this area. We will have to have a Cougartown get together in the Sacramento area. Everyone have a nice weekend. Matt

Message: Hello Joyce, nice to hear from you. It looks like we are neighbors. About the UCLA ride, I haven't been on that one yet and I doubt that we have crossed paths recently, you may recognize Pat when you see her. I moved back to Ca from Missouri just a little over a year ago. I picked up my 2000 softail on Dec. 31, 99 after being on a waiting list for what seemed forever, What a nice New Year present that was. Pat has a 97 Sportster Hugger punched out to 1200cc with a stretch tank and a custom paint job. I rode into work today and am about to head out to lunch with a couple other riders from work. Pat gets concerned a little that I ride in rush hour traffic. I'm not trying to worry her, riding is just "To Much Fun". Sorry Baby! Joyce Check out this ride scheduled for this coming Sept.
Pat and I will be on this one.

Message: Hi everyone! Usually a reader not a poster but I could not resist. Last night on spur of the moment I was asked to a Ricky Martin concert (love of my life) and went. I had to pick up my friend at work (lax) and passed thru Hawthorne. Our high school looks so different as does Hawthorne itself. A bit disappointing. On my way to the concert I was telling all these younger women about when I went to a Beach Boys concert on New Years eve and had third row seats in 1976. They could not relate! Then I tried telling them about the Rod Stewart concerts I used to attend in the 70's and again they could not relate. I felt a bit old until I got to the concert and saw "RICKY" and for a moment felt "16" again! What a great feeling if only for an hour! Not used to being a spur of the moment kind of gal but the whole evening was just way too cool. I recommend that everyone do something wild and crazy every once in while just to relive the magic of our youth. Thanks for listening!!!!!!
Thanks Louise, but Ricky Martin!!?? I can't MUST mean Ricky Nelson.

So, just read Anita e-mail and I've been talking to Terrie and somewhere Mike is in the picture all taking an interest in having a some short of a reunion all-class style here in the Northwest. Well, I know they're alot of folks living in the Northwest and some are very interested in meeting everyone but for the rest of you????? We need to start a list of "Who's interested" so we can plan accordingly. Seaside Beach is a good place to start and I will be getting in touch with Shilo Inn to see what kind of discount package they're willing to offer. So, E-mail me and let's get together! Can't be all that hard can it? Act quickly because summer is almost over (well, we got til early Oct. do we?). I'm up for a fun game of Volleyball, skating on the strand (yes we got one of our very own but not nearly as good as the good ol South Bay Strand). Be looking forward of hearing ya all.
There you go Northwest Cougs. The gauntlet has been thrown down. Let's see what you can come up with. I know there are hundreds of you, so it will be a great party. Good Luck....

Linda Dietrich of Kansas City....I don't know what your temp has come down to but we're still hitting the triple digits here in Texas! I guess we were too much for him to handle. One thing I remember about you is how you thought the song "Grazin' in the Grass" was so cool on the harmony. P.S. Don't change anything on your Nomad...It's a sin to mess with one of God's Creations...

Yeah Summer of 75 - BIKE RIDE FROM HELL. Hey, Mike's not kidding about that skin part either. I lost 12 pounds on that trip and I think 10 pounds was epidermus and yes, DERMUS TOO!!
