Message: I wanted to stand and applaud when I read the letter from Sharon Branigan on computer porn! This was the subject on Touched by an Angel Sunday nite. A 13 year old girl opened a site titled Hawaii and got a porn site then coundn't close it. The same thing happened to my 12 year old grandaughter. She just input the name of a popular singing group and got a porn site & couldn't close it. My daughter tried to close it and couldn't at first, it just kept rolling to another page, each one worse than the last. And we allow this garbage to go on in the name of free speech? O.K. I'll get off the soap box now.
NO, Stay up there Marilyn. You're doing a fine job. This crappola has to stop. The Larry Flints of the world are the strange ones, not us.

Message: Way to go Sharon. I agree with you 100%. Even someone like me who holds the Constitution to be sacred (particularly the 2nd Amendment) feels that that type of trash doesn't belong where it can offend or be exposed to others, especially children! On a similar note, there is now a new edition of Playboy for married men. It has pictures of the same woman month after month after month after month..........
Very funny Alan. It's about time you climbed out of that boat and gave us a shout. I was starting to worry about you too. BTW, speaking of people who don't check in any more. Happy Birthday to Frank Romano this week. Let us hear from you Frank. Ricki and Jakejude too. You're all way overdue.

And right on, the opinion letter by Sharon Branigan! Very well put! Yeah, if I ever saw a perv looking up smut at the library, I'd probably say something out loud to embarrass the hell out of him and make him leave! There's tons of kids in our library.

Anita, Thank you for straightening me out (don't go there Judy). Now.....who said the "Perv" was a "Him"?

Message: My good friend Melanie and I left lousy Lancaster to head for the car show (known Melanie since kdg. and my 16 yr. old daughter and her best friend since kdg. were in the back seat, how odd!) at 11:30 and traffic was so bad we got there at 2:10. I think I missed any alumni that might have been there. It's a good thing I left my 13 yr. old son at home, he would have definitely enjoyed the "pictures" on some of those cars! Been recognizing a lot of names and faces on feedback. Hope to make it to a Pink's or Cruise Night soon. The wind has stopped here in the desert, now the great sun is beating upon us. Gotta make more trips to the beach this summer. Ya Cougars have a great week. Leave it to the class of 72 to have a voyeur (or at least an admitted one!). God bless ...
Thanks Debra, sorry we missed you, but we'll catch you on Cruise Night III or Homecoming Weekend.

And Harry Plotkin! LOL! : ) Now I know what he does in Harbor City as a job to bring in extra bucks on the weekend!...I didn't know there was a "Birdcage" aka La Cage a Follies in Harbor City! Way to go Harry!

Anita, No, Harry's not gay, he just likes the feel of a chenille house dress. Actually, before this gets out of hand, This was a halloween costume, but he could have gone as a cowboy.

Message: Hi all,
Just wanted to put in my two cents and say how much fun we had this weekend. I know we didn't get to all the events but still had a good time. We love being with all of you. I totally agree with the rest of you who commented on the inappropriateness of the the X-rated cars. Who can we complain to? Would like to see more "Classic cars" next time. We need to build Hawthorne's reputation UP not down. Hope to see you all again very soon. Judy , did you try out the rosary in the dark last night ??

Thanks Karen, I received lots of positive email on the subject of blatant Porn in the full view of kids. My favorite was from Mom B, who sent me what her baby daughter Sharon HHS77 had written about people getting on Internet porn sites from the Thousand Oaks library computers, in full view of anyone that happened to be passing by, kids included. She wrote,

A Personal Opinion by Sharon Branigan

Free speech has nothing to do with viewing pornography on an internet site at a public facility. Pornography does not belong in a library; it doesn't belong at the Employment Development Dept, it doesn't belong at the Welfare office, it doesn't belong in the school district offices, or in ANY public facility, which is supported by my taxes and yours, and yours, and yours; because it's not FREE SPEECH. Viewing a porn site in a public facility has nothing to do with SPEAKING FREELY, or researching a story for a newspaper article, or in developing a thesis for a degree. (If anyone tells you that's what they are doing, know them to be a liar.) What a person at a LIBRARY is doing viewing pornography is getting a hard-on in front of MY KIDS and YOUR KIDS and EXPOSING ALL OF US to obscenities which we do not wish to view.

Do you expect to walk into the FAA office or the IRS and find courtesy copies of Hustler and Cheap Slut lying in the waiting room? What's the difference HERE?

Why does a man go to the LIBRARY to view pornography anyway? Maybe because he gets a thrill out of being aroused in a public place? If it is illegal to walk into the library NAKED, why isn't it illegal to expose other library patrons to pictures of naked women on a computer- and heaven only knows what sort of activities are being "researched": bestiality, pedophilia, necrophilia? Hey, with the World Wide Web, ANYTHING is available!

I am amazed that the Thousand Oaks Library allows such viewing, in PLAIN SIGHT of other library visitors, and most especially, children. Those computers at the library are right in the middle of everything! If they MUST allow porn access (due to some unbelievably stupid laws that don't make a damn bit of sense to a great number of the population,) then those who wish to exercise their RIGHTS to view such smut should be shut into an enclosed room (the smut hut?) so no one (including my 9 year old) can pass by and see this garbage. And they had better stock that room with lots of paper towels and rubber gloves and 409 because there's going to be a LOT of cleaning up to do. Why do YOU think people visit porn sites? Medical research?

By this reasoning our children should be able to access the "Adult" magazines at the library, too... Hey, wait a minute! They keep the Playboy under lock and key - you have to ASK for it at the desk! Now THERE'S a free speech violation! If it's okay for my kid to access internet porn or view it over a strangers shoulder why should he have to go through the embarrassment of having to ASK for Playboy? Bring it on out in the open! FREE SPEECH!

Anyone who believes that pornography is FREE SPEECH is sadly misled by overblown media bull. If it's free speech then why isn't it on all the billboards around town? Why don't they show this garbage on free TV and print it in the LA Times and the TO Star? Because it's offensive. Because it's inappropriate in public places. There are actually laws AGAINST IT! But what about FREE SPEECH?!!

John Q Public, keep your pornography at home where it belongs. Keep it OUT of my kids face.

This may seem like a crude response but I ask you, what is more offensive to you- me calling it what it is, or your child (or yourself) being exposed to pornography at the library? (Or the school office? Or the social security offices?)

Why is it that the company that I work for doesn't allow Pinup nudie posters on the walls, and doesn't allow employees to keep smut magazines at their desks, because I could call it sexual harrassment; but the librarian has to work in a place where people can view computer VIDEOS of every sexual position imaginable? Doesn't the librarian have rights, too?

We should all gather at the library and the moment anyone pulls up a porn site (pardon the expression) we should all stand behind him (her?) and remark on the merits of the site- ugly, flat, chubby, dirty, fake, etc. Bring it to the attention of everyone in the library. Gather us a BIG old crowd. That's our right, isn't it? Free speech, to say what we think about anything without the fear of repercussion by government?

If they try to throw us out or arrest us, we can sue the library for violating OUR free speech.

Thank God for parents like Sharon........ Actually thank God for the parents of parents like Sharon. That's where Sharon learned her values as a human being.

Message: What a great weekend!!! As somebody said earlier, when isn't it fun when the Cougs get together.
Judy might think it was great at our favorite teachers Mr. Plotkins and Mrs. Brooks but I am still pouting because Judy got to sit next to Mrs. Brooks when we learned the Itsy Bitsy Spider song. If I couldn't sit next to Mrs. Brooks then I wanted to join the boys at Mr. Plotkins for the sex education but Mrs. Brooks would not let me go and I got a time out for disrupting our group. Judy always was the teachers pet!!!! John, don't worry about Robin and the monkey bars, I let him stop at the park on the way home and he got to play.
Thank you Mr. Plotkin and Mrs. Brooks for the wonderful LONG afternoon, I am sure that when you invited us you didn't know that we would never leave.......we just had too much fun and didn't want it to end. Deb and Jim Sloey, it was soooo great to see you. Colleen and Terry, glad you made it to VFW hope to see you again soon.
Tim, thanks for the good wishes and hope to meet all of you soon.

Message: Well, HHS CAR SHOW was the best..& I agree with John Baker about the porno cars.. geesh.. did we "hafta pay" to see that cr*p at a family affair! CONNIE JAX'S BBQ~a big success.. but the glow in the dark rosary goes back in my drawer.. next BBQ..we hafta play pass the banana (don't go there John)~~but it was great to meet DEANO AND GARY LENTS finally and to see my old Catholic school chum, SHEILA HENLEY. VFW BREAKFAST~ always a blast..finally saw Colleen TROTT AND TERRY O'RYAN. "fun, fun, fun" Then off to ROWDY MR. PLOTKIN'S and OUR MISS BROOKS' for an afternoon of fun. (teachers ya know) I still don't know what to make of the visit. They started the afternoon off with the salute to the flag.. then Miss Brooks showed us her home.. (Marsha and I noticed that her cupboards had small empty boxes of cereal and canned goods..like in kindergarden) Then they asked us to check our pockets for our milk money in our hankies tied in a knot. They also served us graham crackers but John Baker and Robin Hood bit off one end and made a pistol out of it and started playing Hoppy and the Lone Ranger.. Miss Brooks made them sit on the end of the rug for "time out". After nap time on our blankets, we were told to line up in a row, an arms length apart and march to the recreation room. We had to stop on the spot everytime Miss Brooks clicked her clicker. Later that day John B. had time out again for looking up Mo Trott's dress.
Then we had finger paints & playing with clay~and towards the end of the day, Mr. Plotkin took boys to his place for a sex education talk. (something about a b*ner) Then Miss Brooks lead us in THE ITSY BITSY SPIDER song and dismissed us. I still can't figure out why she set the timer when Marsha and I used her restroom. Then she took out her hanky-licked it..and cleaned our faces.. & sent us home. Thanks Cathy and Harry for the goodies and the afternoon of fun and games.
And now, I'm off like a prom dress.
Judy DeGrazia Blomsterber THE ROWDYS

Judy hasn't quite figured out how to spell that BIG LONG last name she has acquired.
And about that Mo Trott dress peaking thing......It was her fault as she said "she didn't have one", and of course I knew that wasn't true, but Mr Plotkin caught me and made me sit in the corner. OH, and she does "have one" too, cuz I saw it.
I had forgotten all about biting the corner off a graham cracker and making a pistol out of it. I guess today, it would be against the law to do that in school. They let US do it and you can see how WE all turned out. Thanks Judy Wudy, you crack me up every day of my life. And thanks to HCH and Kathy Brooks for the fun Sunday afternoon. We had a great time at Kathy's, then went to Harry's house and saw what he likes to do for fun. Harry, you'll have to teach me how to hook my bra. I've never mastered that art. Also Robin says he's not coming back to your house until you get some "Monkey Bars". Thank you both for the fun Sunday afternoon. We had a great time.

Yes, it's time to start planning the next HHS Homecoming weekend II, and seeing as Susan Ciampa Walling (HHS77) has moved north, Loretta Morelli Cuiper (HHS62) will be heading up the weekend activities along with Judy Strahm, Terry Leeper's (HHS 63) better half. I'm not even sure when Homecoming weekend will be this year yet, but I'll find out. Message: Betty Kean Rodriguez...thanks for clairifying the Hood situation. How the hell was I to know there were 2 Hood families in Hawthorne at the same time and some of them at school with me and my siblings at the same time? Too many Hood's in one town ( and you thought they just said that because we all were such Rowdy kids...LOL!) But seriously...thanks a bunch!
And to Tom Burroughs...my mom used to live in Prescott Valley, AZ and she took me into the little town of Prescott. Nice digs. That town is about the same size, and some of the buildings in the old town area are as old as some of the one's in my town.
And John...no, I think it's cool that you respect women and think that the porno murals and such were out of line at a family event. So do I! And I agree that kids todays' morals are down the toilet! Jesus! Do I sound like my mom now or what?! Probably because I'm a mom now that I can relate to all those things she said long ago. Guess the parents were right all along! Way to go Big John! : )

The reason I was thinking that was I remember the boys looking in the doors. Now I remember, they would stroll by nonchalantly and look in, then play innocent. They were just walking on the sidewalk and didn't realize where they were. Yea right. It was nice meeting John and the other Cougars at the picnic. Thanks Connie for a great job.
