Message: The tornado was on November 7, 1966. When the tornado hit I was giving birth to my son at Hawthorne Memorial Hospital......so it is a day I will never forget! The trees were down and the roof tops came off all along 135th street, between Inglewood Ave and Hawthorne Blvd.
Thanks Maureen, I knew someone would pin it down. Don't forget to send along your new address.

Message: Hello John and fellow Cougars,
It's been a little while since I posted a message but I wanted to wish all of you that are going to the wine country a great trip. I was in Santa Clara a couple weeks ago and the weather was just perfect. Hey Baker if you find the place that makes makes Peach Brandy "don't go there" ....If I remember correctly You & I were working at Tangers Shell the night after your Palladium Party (1962) and you found some of the stuff in your car. It went down soooo easy that we finished that bottle and another one and I don't remember much after that....Boy did I get sick....Why do I seem to remember Joyce sewing my hand back together after I fell into a glass door??? If you find Boone's Farm buy me a hat.
M.S.

That wasn't a door. You stuck your hand through the glass on the gas pump. Man, whattanight. It was Carol Dunlap Calkins HHS61 that did the butterfly stitch on your hand and I got REAL sick that night too. I can't go near Peach or Blackberry Brandy to this day. I think Boones Farm is made in the back yard of some guy in Downey or Norwalk, but I WILL bring you a hat from wine country.

Message: Sorry to dispute your memory, Patty Smith, class of '68, but I only lived in that area of Hawthorne and only went to Ramona elementary in 1966, when I was 6 and my brother was 11. The year was 1966 when the Tornado hit! And Bonnie McCoy...thanks for the info. on Teri Painter. I hope that will help me find her.
Anita, That school year would've begun in September of 66 and ended in June of 67. Maybe that's where the confusion lies.

Message: That tornado that hit Hawthorne happened in my senior year, probably early 67. The reason I can remember it is, that it hit while I was home for lunch. John Norman and I were standing in my driveway at my house when it hit. My older sister told us to get in the house quick. We stood at the kitchen window and saw it tear down the Escalante`s fence across the street and some shingles as it continued north on Ramona. It also tore down Mike English`s fence at the corner of 137th place and Ramona. When we got back to school that was the talk of the day, how Hawthorne had it`s first tornado.

Message: The tornado that hit Hawthorne was in my senior year, so it was probably in 68. I remember because I was taking tailoring with Miss Saal right after lunch, and she wanted to know what to do if there WAS a tornado. Well, about 2 minutes after, IT HIT! It didn't do any damage to HHS, but jumped over I think to Eucalyptus. I remember that it was the first tornado Hawthorne ever had. Funny, I was living in Waco, Texas when THEY had their first tornado ever. Is it ME???!!!
Patti, PLEASE stay out of Lomita!!!

Message: WHAT UP COUGAR ALWAYS REMEMBER LEUSINGER IS BETTER
Better than what? I'm sure you're not speaking of the written word. Let's see now, "WHAT UP COUGAR" I think you meant to say "What's up Cougars?" Then, "ALWAYS REMEMBER LEUSINGER IS BETTER" Again, I'm not sure but I think you meant to say, "Always remember, Leuzinger is better." (I went to HHS and even I can spell Leuzinger)
That's not too bad for a Leuzinger guy though. A seven word essay and only six mistakes.
It's never too late Erik. If you can't get it done in the daytime at LHS, maybe you can take some night classes at Hawthorne. Thanks man.......

In particular, I would like to find out what has happened to the guys who ran (and dominated) the Mile Relay with me from 1972-1976: George LeDoux, Duane Wristen and Lee Whitely. I'd also like to know what happened to all the other guys I ran distance practice with, including Neal Severance, Harold Stephens, Eric Clement and his brother Bryan, Dave Gonzales, John Howard and others too numerous to name.
Hey Michael, I'm sure someone knows someone on your list. Anyone??

Message: This is to all of you: Just reading some of someone's letter about 136th and Ramona brought back an old memory of mine... My mom and dad had just gotten divorced a short while ago, and we moved into a house on 129th st., in between Inglewood Ave. and Ramona st. I think even the school me and my brother, Mike, went to was called Ramona school. (Bear with me, I was only 6 people). Anyhow, one day, this freak small tornado came down Ramona Ave. and only lasted a couple of blocks, but it hit our school. I remember all our windows blew out, and we were all under our desks doing the good ol' "duck and cover" and when it was all over, the huge Eucalyptus tree in the park was toast, sand from the sandbox and swingset area was everywhere, there was various debris everywhere, and my brother's 5th grade classroom, across the street from mine, the ceiling flew away!
What I want to know is was any of you other people there at that school or lived in that neighborhood remember that freaky day the tornado came to Hawthorne? I'd love to hear your stories. I'll bet my brother, Mike, would too!

I remember it as the tornado that tore up Truro. I think it was about 65 or 66 and it was pretty rough on the Ramona/Truro area of Hawthorne. I was living in Lennox at that time and was pretty much out of harms way.

She's good, with plenty of experience, but it looks like 100 or more people are possible. one more thing...Sue Kiester Ferguson lives in San Jose, and has wanted some reunion info. Message: This is to Elizabeth Estrada...Thanks so much for your hearthfelt letter to me. It really means a lot. Yeah, my mother-in-law would be better off if she goes soon. I don't like it when people have to suffer and linger like this. I just want her to go to her better place and be at peace, not only for her sake, but my hubby's and his siblings. Again, thanks so much. Sharon Willis! I remember you! You used to party with Mary all the time! I thought I recognized your name and picture in here earlier. Yeah, Mary and Toni LaFontaine (Morrison) go back a long way. Since they were little kids, and we lived on 125th st. behind the football field, and Toni and her family lived around the corner. Victor, Toni's dad, had the nicest lawn in the whole neighborhood. All Dichondra grass. Mary, Toni and Lisa Carey and another girl I can't remember her name, all belonged to the Beatles fan club, and one Halloween, they all dressed as their favorite Beatle. And, I remember them screaming and going nuts when The Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan show. I was only like 4 or 5 then, and thought they were nuts. Funny the weird things you remember about your siblings and their friends, isn't it? How long have you been in Maui? Me and my mom went to Oahu when I was 16. I had an aunt, uncle and cousins who lived there then, on the North Shore. Would of loved to of gone to Maui or another island, too. Maybe if me and hubby ever go there, we'll have to look you up,huh. Kell Currie...Coos Bay was where I lived when I first moved to Oregon with my boyfriend, Drew Shryock. We lived there from 1980-1982. I miss Cape Arago, Sunset Beach and lighthouse and Bastendorf Beach. And hiking in the woods off of one of those places and hear the seals barking like dogs out there on Simpson's Reef. I always felt kind of weird at first when I moved to Coos Bay. A good friend of my sisters, Don Pike, died there a few years before I moved there. They found him face down in either the Coos or Coquille river, can't remember which. Just really sad. Don was a funny guy, from what I remember of him. He was only like 24 or 25 when he died.
Speaking of such...I put in a tribute to a friend of mine who died a few years ago, Kathy Byrns. Maybe someone who knew Don Pike and more about the exact year and stuff of his passing should put something in the tributes, as well. Any takers out there? Just think it's important that we remember the cool people who gave us good memories long ago to be thought of in here, as well.

Speaking of not changing one bit-Donna (Van Douris) you look exactly like you did in high school except your hair is shorter-you will always be my fourth sister. It felt so good to see you all.
