Message: Hi JB and all. I emailed feedback a few days ago and I dont believe that you received it so I am playing catch up. First of all JB thanks for the picture of the little store but I still dont remember the name. Can anyone tell me? Next, I sure hope you enjoyed those chili dogs for me. I have the heartburn now Ha. Christine Penny, I sent you a message to please email me. I would like to visit with you since we both live in this big old state. Wendy Frye Zeller. My first married name was Bridgwater and you baby sat for my four boys when we lived in Hollyglen and you lived across the street from us on Yukon? Gosh I cant remember the name of the street! Any way Please email me so we can get caught up. John this site just gets better and better, and as someone wrote earlier, there is no place on earth like Hawthorne Ca and all of us had the pleasure and joy of living there and being a part of its history. Thank you again for this site and keeping our youth alive for all of us. Liz
Hi Liz, I think it was Don's Market in our day.

Message: Wanted to clarify the Feedback I sent a few days ago regarding moving back to So.Calif. if I had the chance. I was having one of those "Gee I sure miss So. Cal and family" days. Those are to be expected. Actually we're adjusting quite well. I start thinking about all that smog and traffic, but Portland has it's share of traffic jams, pounding subwoofers and sparce parking spaces. But just a few minutes drive outside Portland and you're in some really pretty areas.......THEN IT STRUCK ME. "DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU THAT IF YOU HAD NOT MOVED HERE THAT YOU MAY HAVE NEVER GOT TO HEAR DOC WATSON IN PERSON?!" Seriously when I start reminicsing about So. Cal. I can get pretty negative about our situation up here. But on the positive side we have been able to buy a house, have met some wonderful people, found a great church and have learned some valuable life lessons.
Hey Larry, Portland's great.......if you're a duck,and as for Doc, he makes the rounds. Thanks man . . . . . . .

Message: Thank-you John, Didn't realize I had to rotate my tires every 6000 miles. What you don't learn here at CT. Just think if people at our age don't get reminders somewhere.(where better than ole memory lane itself), about check-ups and 60's related diseases, we may not last to have memories. Thanks Lisa. Did El RoJo stop smoking? or was that memory lane just to much memory for the guy. No disrespect.. I would really like to know. And I was real impressed with the HHS Class of 55. Didn't know the school was still in construction while kids were going to class, or am I confused again.
Kelley, No, you're not confused. Here's a picture of the boys gym under construction.

Message: First of all thank you John for such a great place to recall our memories and also inform other "Cougars" of our present memories in the making! I have a couple of questions...since I'm new to this site, what the heck does "Pinks" mean. I hate to sound like I'm illiterate but even after reading all the feedbacks I can't quite put it together. I understand the cruise nights at "Fosters", I can smell those burritos boats, chili fries and coke freezes now, but for the life of me what is Pinks...someone please help this "old broad" comprehend!
PINKS is a hot dog stand on Melrose and La Brea. It's been there since 1939 and has the best chili dogs this side of Nathans on the boardwalk. When I was going to HHS, and we were out cruisin', someone would say lets go to "Hot Dog Louies" (our name for Pinks). I know that Jerry Carron, a friend of mine from Inglewood High, ate 17 dogs one night not knowing that the record is held by the infamous Orson Welles at 18. Anyway now you know. The next time we plan a Pinks run (probably about 2 weeks), please try and make it. You won't be sorry.

Message: To JB and the ROWDY bunch at Pink's last night: This is the first time I missed a trip to Pink's with the wild bunch. The past trips have been nothing but pure fun. Not to mention the megaton heartburn from the Pink's Dogs that lasts for days. What a treat. Anyway, I was away on business in Nevada, (nothing to do with a prom dress Judy), and promised to attend my grandson's basketball game in El Segundo that same night. His team won and I had no heartburn. What a price to pay for missing the ROWDY bunch from Pink's. See ya next time around.
Alan

Hey Alan, I thought you were mad at me because I haven't finished that project yet. I'll get back on it soon, I PROMISE!!! The house has taken lots of my time this past week. Getting real close and have to keep the push on.

Message: Ok I think it is Tracy Turner. The best control pitcher in Hawthorne history. The only bad part about that is the batter knew that every pitch was going to be a strike. I remember you being able to hit the glove no matter where I put it. That is the only left handed pitcher I knew that could possibly get me out. And Mike Bishop that year didn't hit 15 home runs did he. I hit 9 or 10 in the ten cames we played to the championship where we ruled. I remember there was a guy who was supposed to be the fastest high school runner anywhere and the reporters came up to me and Greg Staffon and said how are we going to keep him from stealing. And, if you remember the ball I threw to second base got there before he started his slide. I also remember the little kids that were there would come up to me before each game to ask me what field I was going to hit a home run too. Remember Terry Mack getting mad at me for going out with his girlfriend Lindsay Castle and benched me for a game. Remember putting shaving cream in Ross Wineberger palm when he was sleeping and tickled his nose with a string and he smeared the shaving cream on his face. I did so many things to get us in trouble I don't remember the time at Sambo's. What did I do. That was so much fun back then. Oh by the way everyone we brought the championship trophy home to Hawthorne.
he does it again Folks.........and the crowd goes wild !!!

But, for those who are interested, tonight (Thursday) on 20/20 The "Untold Story" of Brian Wilson. Also, what happened to all the people who were going to show up for Pink's last night? When JB plans one of these runs for a weekend, you better show up, or NO WHINING... GOT IT! So, now that we have that clear, we had a great time last night with the SAME wonderful group that always shows up. We laughed until we couldn't laugh any more....and then we laughed some more. Message: I am a volunteer for the American Liver Foundation and I am asking everyone who has ever: Snorted drugs, used someone else's toothbrush, razor, nail clippers, had numerous sexual partners or used IV drugs (even once) that you get tested for Hepatitis C. It is now killing more people than the HIV virus. It is the #l cause for having liver transplants in US. Hep C has become an epidemic and I just hope everyone will take care of themselves and be tested. Not that anyone from Hawthorne would use drugs or had a wild and crazy sex life but just in case be tested. I know people who haven't used any drugs for l8+ years and are testing positive. Being tested may just save your life. Thanks for letting me pitch this in our website. With love, Lisa
Now there's a walk down memory lane huh folks, and I don't mean to make light of your cause Lisa, but I'm sure everyone should have their prostate checked too, and everyone should see the dentist twice a year, and no one should kick stray dogs, but this is NOT ABOUT THAT. Message: How are you doing Mr. Keith Jones, You said you wanted some middle league stories, I remember my first year in middle league; all the fifteen-year-olds had a bet concerning who would hit the first home run. You had your mind set on doing it, but some punk thirteen-year kid beat you to the punch. I hit a low and away outside fastball off Troy Dixon right after your game. It went over the right field fence (the high one). You asked who hit it and said "OH, HE GOT LUCKY!!". I pitched against your team two days later and struck you out twice and you popped up once. (You never could hit left-handed pitching anyway). You kept saying "WHO IS THAT GUY?" You were on the same team with the Rodriguez Brothers that year (Yankees). I was on the Tigers with Kurt Morlock and Mark Farmsworth. That was the first time I met you. The Stars came in first, Tigers second and Yankees third. We made the all-star team. I pitched the championship game (which the older lads didn't like) and you were catching at that time. Morlock was in right field yelling ever time Bishop came up, "HIT HIM WITH THE BALL!" (Bishop was the one who hit fifteen home runs in the series) He made 3 outs (he also had trouble with lefties). The only batter I had trouble getting out was Greg Staffon. He was also the hardest to hit. Do you ever see any of those guys? Scott Burlingame, Mike Castro, Dan Clary, Dennis Conners, Troy Dixon, Mike Gioia, Larry Hendrick, Ron Kelly, Mike Love, Doug Long Steve Miranda, Kurt Morlock, Greg Staffon, Tracy Turner, Dennis Weesner and Ross Winneberger. We played in Santa Maria and slept in the boy's gym; we played poker all-night and watched the antics that you played on everyone. You got us kicked out of Sambo's Restaurant; tell all your sports fans about that! Good to see everything going well for you. See Ya Ziggy

I thought that Sams bar had the best burgers in town. My dad used to bring home these huge hamburger buns from that place. Pitchers of ice cold beer and burgers. A little slice of heaven. Corrupting your brother? Was that before or after the mowhawk? How about that hair of his. He would grow his hair long, get a mowhawk before mowhawks were cool, and then buz it all off like the gangsters of today. He was just ahead of his time - wasn't he? Adults use to think I was the boy and he was the girl. I wonder if he finds that as funny as I do?
