Message: Tonight we were sitting on the patio watching the stars when we heard this noise from the bushes. Our house has a back yard shared by a group of us of about 8 acres. We have had coyotes, deer, foxes and assorted birds you seldom see in LA. Well tonight out of the bushes comes this little Beaver. It has been beaten up, looks like he was orphaned and very scared. Well we encouraged him, got him some food and a comfort area, he looks like he will be our favorite for a long time. I just can not get over what that little guy, who no loved or appreciated gave, has given us so much joy tonight. We're looking forward to the Ducks, maybe some Bears or their babies or even a Cardinal. But I doubt they will be able to begin to make us smile as much as that little Beaver.
Yes we lost tonight, but lost to a better team. It just goes to show "You have to play every game" is NOT a cliche. Take care of your Beaver, Jim

Message: Thanks Keith and Rick -- great stuff (I remember Davey catching Rocky!). Regarding that HNML photo -- I'm pretty sure that I played in the league that year on the Cubs (and I think Dennis Connor was on my team and the only one in that photo). I do remember we started the year out with one set of coaches and they bailed and were replaced (I think) by one of the Long brothers (Kip was on the team). I don't know -- this stuff is pretty fuzzy. What I didn't realize at the time is that my eyesight was deteriorating which hindered my hitting ability. Two years later, when I was 15 1/2 and went to get my learner's permit at the DMV, I failed the eye test and had to get glasses. Had I known earlier, I might have got glasses and remained competitive in baseball instead of being forced to stick to basketball and track :(

The picnic on Saturday and again, on Sunday, the 5th annual Rods, Rides and Relics Car Show on the Redondo Beach Horseshoe Pier...I love this show mainly because of its location. All the cars out over the water...gotta watch out for the sea gulls though. Last year my car got splattered!!!!!!
Hey John, Good Luck with the "Pelican Bombers" on Sunday. See you Saturday at the Picnic.

Message: OK it is not looking good for me going to the picnic. Work just has no sense of Humor. It is all my families fault they like living indoors !LOL!. My job sure gets in the way of fun. But with the way things are right now I will be thankful to be working. I am glad I have my memories of a stress free time growing up in Hawthorne when all of the Aerospace/Airplane companies were all doing great. And our families were Taken care of. Now we are just being Taken for a long ride off the Redondo Beach Pier. But....I won't go there.....I will miss all the Good HHS Alumni. Everyone have a great time and take lots of pictures!
Sorry Dennis, NO PICTURES FOR YOU!! Just got back from Costco, Smart and Final, and Target. Got bowls, chips, spoons, table cloths, watermelons, tortilla chips, and a football and I still have to get more stuff. See you all on Saturday minus Dennis.

Message: Here is a mosh pit of Cougarisms. John and Sharon B, did you receive your shirts? Jerry collected his the other day and sent me a response. Rocky Thomas, I will be in Northern California the weekend of HHS's homecoming, Oct 24th -26th. Won't be able to attend. I remember the nose incident. Once again, sorry my friend. Maybe we can hook up at Gaetano's, with Dori, for dinner before wrestling starts. How is your son doing? Rick, "Bad News" how are you? H.A.M.L. was the best. I learned quite a bit from you and Rob D'Quilla my first year, 1969, on the Stars. The lessons continued throughout high school. I thank you and Dennis Miller, HHS '70. Rocky and I teamed up on the Indians in 1970 and we won the League and the City Play-offs against Mike Colburn, Riley Stoops, and the Dodgers. Rocky threw gas and was over powering as a pitcher. Dave Whippo caught him, only guy who could, that year. Great times back then. The out field family gigs were the best. Coors flowed freely back then.
Hey Wade, Thanks for the HAML memories and yes, I received the shirt. Very nice, by the way. Thanks very much for donating them to the HHS Sports Program.

Message: Saturday, Sept 27 Cougartown Picnic!! OK..I'm on my way down to the park to pick up Janny, who has been camped out in the park in a pup tent for 2 weeks holding our spot, and oh, how he's loving it. Give the man sea rations and a pee bottle and he's happy. We're all ready for the Cougartown Picnic that's only 2 days away. If you didn't sign up, you can still show up.. but if you sign in now we'll have a better idea as to how many picnickers will show. So far there's well over 100 alumni and family..and growing. We've picked some great music, games and events. There's low impact and high impact for the younger set. Games involving water and fruit.. inner tubes and frozen t-shirts.. watermelons and water balloons... 3 legged race and a sack race for those that can still jump. For the Italians in the group, I've planned a special "pass the canoli" contest. There will be grills there if you'd like to bring your hot dogs & burgers. If not, just bring your basic picnic lunch. Don't forget a big blanket and lawn chairs if you'd like to park it under a shade tree or on the lawn. While you're at it, take a look at the list of names that have signed up and you might see someone that you haven't seen in years. Let me stop rambling and get going. I had to rent an Army jeep to pick up Janny. It was part of the agreement!! He's done a good job. Hold on Babe.. Mama's on her way!
It's all set and now it's time to PICNIC!! I want to thank Judy and Sharon for the great job they've done on this one. No stone has been left un-turned, from the prizes to the games, it will be a grand Cougar gathering. I also want to thank Dennis Lord and Ellen Wright for procuring the BBQ areas, the Biermans who'll be manning the Tshirt booth and to Maureen Trott for the inner tubes on loan from the city of Hawthorne. Thanks very much to all who've helped out, it's going to be a fun event.

Message: Yes Rocky played when my brother played. I can't remember how good my brother did in Middle League. But in Little League and the All Stars my brother and Mike Colbern and Mike Scott were the best pitchers easy. In fact I think my brother had more no hitters than both of them and I think he had a no hitter in one of the all star games. My was really good. Too bad he didn't follow up with it like both Mike's did

Message: OK Dan, a couple of Rocky stories, In 65,66 we were on the Optimidgets at Snark feild. His Mother takes us to Dodger stadium to see the Cardinals play. Bob Gibson against Don Drysdale. Gibson set the record for shut out innings that day, and the Dodgers won 1-0 (I think). In 69 we were on the H.A.M.L. all star team together and we beat H.N.M.L. They beat us on Saturday but we came back and won 2 from them on Sunday to win the championship. That was Mike Scott's, Mike Cobern's Gary Allenson's, and Dean Morris's team. American had guy's like Dwayne Phelps, Rick Fernandez, Tim Powers, Larry Rutter. However it must be said that there 66 LL team beat American that year. In 69-70 we were on "B" football, Bill Fetherston was coach. Coach was mad at Rocky for slacking off at center, so he has Rocky do a blocking drill. Coach is standing behind me and Rocky comes to block me, I side step Rocky and BOOM down goes Fetherston, We thought we were dead meat. Coach jumps up and yells at Rocky " Now that's how you do it". Coach Fetherston was great coach. Rocky I hope you and your family are doing great. Sorry Ladies for all the sports talk. haha, Later Cougs.
Great stuff Rick, thanks...

Message: It is with a very sad heart that I have asked JB to add two more classmates to our Tribute page. The first is Roy Robinson from the class of 1961. He was the cousin of my ex husband George "Buzzy" Fleshman (class of 1963). Roy passed away in about 1998 from spine cancer. I had a long conversation with Buzzy's brother Dick (class of 1964) last night and he told me about Roy. Unfortuately he also told me that Buzzy had passed away in 1995 (only 50 years old) from a massive heart attack while at work at the LA Times. Needless to say I was very sad. Dick and I have promised to stay in touch after not hearing from one another in about 37 years. He is the last of the family.
Sad news Maureen. Thanks for sharing.

My 15 year old season Hawthorne American merged with the National and we went to Santa Maria, Ca to the World Series and won the whole tournament. By the way in 11 games in the world series I had 10 home runs. We kick big time butt there.

Message: My Dear "Joined at the hip friend", John, It was truly so nice seeing you and the rest of the reunion committee, Dan Dye, Eugene Obillo, Nancy Brooks, & Karen Hoffman last week for dinner. Sorry George Rea and Loretta Morelli could not make it. It is a little early to plan too much for our 50th Reunion but we have actually started with some small plans. It will definitely be in August 2012 (Hot August Night) as George calls it, and we are searching for a place that will be fun, reasonable and fairly close to an airport. I hope all of our Class of 62ers will come. Please start telling everyone from our class that you may come across and hopefully everyone else will do the same. Love yaaaaa. Linda
Hey Slim, Great idea getting the word out now. You can never be too early on Reunions. Wherever it is, I know it will be a blast as it always is with our class.
So 62ers, everyone has time to make your plans. Keep August 2012 open for your "joined at the hip" friends.
