Message: I wanted to share a great story that happened this last weekend. After thirty plus years I decided to visit the old stomping grounds of Hawthorne and the beach cities .I stayed at the Portifino Inn and took a walk on a beautiful Sunday morning on the strand with my wife. We passed many people playing volleyball with no exception until I heard a woman say "Hey Fetherston". I stopped for a second and then looked back. I recognized a familiar looking face. I took a couple of steps and said to myself, you have to see if it is. Sure enough I introduced myself and he said he was indeed Mr. Bill Fetherston. We had a nice chat and we went on our walk. I can't help but ask myself, what are the odds of that encounter..P.S. Hey Bill, my wife says that you are a hottie. Way to go man you still got it.

Message: In the "early" days (before LAX), a road called "Coast Blvd." ran between Imperial Hwy. and Century Blvd. After the war (WWII) it was renamed "Pershing Drive". In the late '50s early '60s it was a narrow two lane road with some very sharp curve's. It was not the safest road to drive much less race, many accidents occured there (not all race related). Later (late'60s or in the '70s) it was made wider and straighter and became a popular place for drag racing.

Message: To Michael Kratz: No, definitely NOT the same Lonnie Rasmussen. The Lonnie in the class of 68 was, sadly, killed in I believe an auto accident in 1966. To Jack Dicus: 9 PM in Florida is 6 PM Pacific Time. So hoist your Coors at 10 tonight...or hoist another. Although I live near the reunion site, I won't be able to make it either due to a family commitment. So have a blast, all, and maybe I'll see you at the next.

Message: Jake, I checked my old maps and I think your memory might be better than you think. Although in later years when I was driving Pershing Drive became a place to raise the speedometer a bit over the norm. This was not the case earlier. Before the tunnel was built over Sepulveda and the runways extended, the old maps show Lincoln as being the prime drive you describe. The tunnel was built in 1953 but the airport expansion wasn?t completed until the early 60?s. Also I remember the Hamburger Handout on Sepulveda and Centinela, but wasn?t there also a Hamburger Handout Junior on (I think) Manchester?

The street ...I could have been wrong. The cars, names and memory are forever. Thanks for the shout though. It's good to have a Coug's response. And you're right JB, it was the way of life back then and " BITCHEN ". The thing that made me the maddest..I wasn't old enough to drive. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude.

Message: Rojo, isn't that Pershing Drive? In or around 1987, I was driving my Plymouth Colt down Pershing on my way to Century City. An Eastern Airlines jet was at the extreme west end of the runway running its engines for some reason. The blast blew out my passenger window and pushed me into oncoming traffic (which obviously missed me, luckily). Even though Eastern was in bankruptcy at the time, its insurance company paid me a little over $100 to get the window fixed!

Message: South Bay book recalls area's early farming; "Farming in Torrance and the South Bay," by Judith Gerber a Torrance native. Saw this article in the Daily Breeze today, went to www.arcadiapublishing.com and bought a copy. Looks like great reading and the book has early pictures of the south bay. Maybe there be some early pictures of Hawthorne in the book?
