Message: The 1984 Olympics in L.A. is a fond memory. A friend (Paul Evans, Lennox HS '72) participated in the torch relay down in Costa Mesa. I have photos and videos of that. Also, Ron Simon (HHS '72) and I worked together and we made a trip down to the Olympic village to scoop up some pins and other goodies. Good times!

Message: John Boy; I remember the 1984 Olympics very well, I was at the opening cerimonies and several of the other events. Unfortunately, I didn't get to see much of any of the athletic events, because I was out of sight on a roof top or secreted in the Sports Arena with my Spotter and my .308 H&K Sniper rifle securing the facility. Fortunately, we had no major security breaches that year as they had had in the past Olympics. Sad state of events, not much has changed, ever since Munich, they spend almost 1/3 as much on securing the Olympics and protecting the athletes as it costs to put them on (Olympics).

Message: I remember the 1984 Olympics, and the whole world being here (except for the Soviet Union who boycotted). I remember seeing Dwight Stones and Edwin Moses around town here training at the UC Irvine track. I also saw some foreigners like Olympic Decathlon champ Daley Thomas of Great Britian training here. The year I went to Hawthorne High in 1968, the Olympic Track & Field trials for the Mexico City Olympics were held at the LA Coliseum. It was a great memorable trial. I got to see Bob Beamon, the great long jumper and Dick Fosbury who's the originator of the "Fosbury Flop" which style is used by the high jumpers of today. Tommy Smith and John Carlos were there also, who are both famous for the fist raising black power protest on the victory stand in Mexico City. A young kid just out of high school named Steve Prefontaine was also competing to make the USA team. In attendance at the meet, we were graced with the presence of the late, great Jesse Owens. I was fortunate enough to get his autograph. Maybe Cougar Rick Mercurio remembers this, because I remember seeing him there at the same time waiting to get his autograph. Does that count as a Cougar sighting?
Great Olympic Memories, Kyle. The statute of limitations has run out on that sighting, though. I remember the 84 Olympics and our super gymnastic team led by Mary Lou Retton and Bart Connor. Also Carl Lewis in the 100 and 200. I remember the closing ceremomies and the American athletes rocking to Lionel Ritchies "All Night Long".

Message: I just checked out the teachers' list and unfortunately didn't see Kathryn Anaphelia Zalowski listed. What a fox she was! About 22 years old, long blond hair and drove a '59 Buick convertible. After school on nice days she would put the top down on the Buick, let her hair down and speed off down the road, hair flying. Check her out on page 19 of the 1960 year book. For Christmas Russ and I gave her a six-pack of beer, but I think she was more of a martini lady. Anybody have any idea what happened to her?
I think she's still looking for Jim Peppers

Message: Thanks John for putting that little piece on Bobby Box. If anyone is interested in seeing a picture of him (current) you can to www.big985.com. Click into djs to find him. Maybe somebody saw him cruising around Hawthorne back in the day! His email address is also listed. The first time I heard him, I was driving to work and he was talking about the good old days in Hawthorne Calif etc...I felt like I was in Cougartown for a couple of minutes. After reading about him....I guess he is more from the late 50's era......maybe leaving Calif in 62...I am curious if anyone does remember him....Til next time.

Message: Ooops! I made a mistake on my last visit....Bobby Box is about 65 or 66 years old. He graduated around 62-63...Maybe even 61. I am thinking he probably went to Lawndale. I should try to contact him and tell him about Cougartown.....he'd love it!
This from the Internet:
I grew up living in Lawndale, California, a suburb of Los Angeles, in the mid to late 50's. My summers were spent with Dad in Abilene, Texas, so I knew both city and country life. My first radio job was in 1962 in Buddy Holly's hometown of Lubbock. I worked in Chattanooga, Atlanta and Austin before coming to Albuquerque in 1968. I've worked here for most of the past 36 years, taking a brief time out to do a morning show in Sacramento, CA and Cleveland in the 1970's. Total time away from Albuquerque Radio = 3 years. I'm doing exactly what I've always wanted to do - play the music I grew up listening to and playing the music that I used to play when they were fresh hits. My philosophy is "play what the people want to hear, not what some myopic consultant thinks you want to hear". I work for a wonderful company and I'm very proud to be the morning guy here at Big Oldies 98.5. God has blessed me with a beautiful family and the greatest listeners in the world. I remain, your Guru of the Grooveyard, Bobby Box.

Message: This is something I keep forgetting to bring up...So I will do it now before I forget......Did anyone ever know a guy named Bobby Box? He graduated from the very early 60's...Probably about 65 or 66....He was from Hawthorne/Lawndale....Though I do not know which school he went to....Bobby Box is a popular DJ here in Albq. He is on 98.5 Big Oldies....He talks about the Beach Boys a lot and the good old days of Hawthorne Blvd, A & W, and all the stuff everyone talks about here on his show. Bobby Box is his real name....He says he gets asked that a lot. Just curious...
Don't remember him, Jean....

Message: It is sad to hear that coach Minami?s son passed away. Is there an address we can send a card? The passing of coach Yost is sad too. I think Bill Sloey captured the sentiments of all the wrestlers. Who knew that a cornhusker could be so eloquent. The memorial service for Dallas Yost will be at the Kiwanis Hall - Hermosa Beach on Saturday August 23rd at 11 am. Lunch to be served. The Kiwanis Hall is located at 2515 Valley Drive, Hermosa Beach, CA. If you would like to send a card to the family please send it to Dorothy Yost at 447 Herondo #209, Hermosa Beach, CA 90254.
Thanks Matt....

Message: Okay John, Entering this South Kihei taco joint I overheard these beach folks dropping familiar names. Claiming to be from Hawthorne; their stories checked out. (I separated them before questioning). They were eyeing an autographed photo of a couple of celebs who looked familiar but I couldn't be sure. The picture's STILL on the wall flanked by The Governator & Eddie Murphy atop Mike Myers! Funny, patrons were actually looking at it and offering up guesses! Some pretty big stars, I'd say. If they weren't famous before... they soon will be! So, is that a sighting and what do I get if it is? Thanks, Jim
PS The guys in the pic? Nothing to write home about!
Hey Jim, You win a free all expense paid trip to MAUI...... of course you're already there, so hows'bout if Mammal pays for your taco?

Both are helping me open up Tamura's Catering. Something I have wanted to do for so long. Now thanks to you for having this great web page and all you do for it and us. So I know that we can help out the schools with all that has to be done. Thank you so much.
Hi Pam, Thanks for the thanks, and glad you've found your friends. That's what it's all about. Good luck with the catering business too.

Message: Yes go to Alexanders. I love that place. I talked to my daughter who is still on the Big Island and she said so many people are leaving or even moving off the Big Island because of the VOG. She said a couple days ago was the clearest days for quite awhile. Coach Minami was was absolute favorite teacher and coach of all time. He treated me like his son. I know he had a lot of hope in me to make in baseball and I failed him. He helped me in a lot of ways. I feel so sorry for him right now. I know his wife and only met his kds when they were real little. My heart goes out for him and his family right now. Can someone tell me what happened
