Message: Hello HHS Alumni, Recently I have been checking out Cougartown on a regular basis. I have family and friends from the 50's to the 90's that attended HHS. I'll start with Bobby Guy, one of my very best friends from the 50's...I think '58. He was known as "Sir Guy" in the day and I am proud to have him as a friend. Moving on, The Greasby Family...uncles Wade and Kirk, Aunts Stacy and Leslie...pretty cool to follow them. My brother Mike, class of '80 and my sister, Jaymie, class of '90. The one thing that all of us have in common with HHS is Neil Minami. This is the main reason that I am contacting you all. Coach Minami's son, Jaret passed away. Coach Minami is very special to me and I am sure many of you feel the same way. Services will be Sunday, Aug 10. Details will be posted ASAP. Craig
Hi Craig, Thanks for the information and will be awaiting the details.

Message: I am saddened to report that former HHS coach and teacher, Dallas Yost passed away today. Many Cougars from the mid 60's and into the 80's were his students, players and wrestlers. He and his family were close friends to my parents, me and my brothers. There will be a memorial within the next few weeks in the South Bay, and I will update Feedback regarding those details. RIP Coach.....
Hi Mike, Very sad news, indeed. I know coach Yost had a great following of wrestling proteges. He was one in a million and will be truly missed. Thanks for the information.

Message: Tommie Whitener, ... when you told me you had to go, all you said was, I have to get on my bike and go to the city! And so you left and the rest is history. I felt that it was an "OK" and gone, or off like a Prom Dress as Judy Wudy would say. I remember you calling and asking about an old 45 rpm record that you wanted to know the artist or something about 5 or 6 years ago and that was the last time we've been in touch. But would love to hear from you again. We had too many fun times with the rest of the guys in "the room ".
Steve Wolfe... great to see your post. One of the great athletes at HHS of all time. Great track star. Hope to see more from you. And Judy and Jan we will have to get together, positively, when we come down in 2010. I think we'll be there. Don't know for sure. We're hoping so. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU ALL. Jake N Jude.
All you guys show up at Cruise Night in a couple of weeks. Just got off the phone with Bruce George HHS62, and he's bringing a ton of people including Mykkanen and his sister, Marlene HHS67. Looks like Cruise Night will be full of 60s Cougars.

Message: The dust has settled and we are successfully moved to San Clemente. Somewhere, inside one of the 2165 boxes that surround me, is my checkbook! We are adopting an athlete this year and as soon as I can find my checkbook (which better be soon because it's been packed for 2 months) I'll send a check. I hope everyone in Cougartown will take a couple of minutes to dig out their checkbooks, too. Here's a chance to make a difference! Class of 76 hasn't been represented on the donor board yet, I'm proud to be the first but sad, too... Come on, Cougs- send in a donation- no matter the size, every little bit helps!
Thanks very much Sharon, and to all who've sent in your checks. It's nice to know that we all really still care about our HHS. I'm so proud of our Cougartown group and the way they are stepping up right now. I've found that there's a core group that checks in all the time, maybe 300 to 400. The rest of the 6000+ on the Alumni list needed to be contacted by email. I've received so many nice emails since Saturday saying thanks for the email and for letting them know the situation, and they are responding. Thanks for all your support; Cougars, Teachers, and Moms included. Without you all, surely the athletic program would be lost. If you want to see how the donations are progressing, or to donate, please go here. We aren't out of the woods yet, by a long shot, but we are slowing devouring this problem. Thanks again Cougars for the help.

Message: I would like you to know that all 4 of my children graduated from Hawthorne High School, Tammy Stiritz in 78, Allen Stiritz in 81 and Pegi Stiritz in 83 my son Jim graduated from Lawndale High School in 80. I worked at Hawthorne High for 12 years and watched as the student body changed, the closing of Lennox and Lawndale changed the atmosphere there. I know when my neighbors complained about the fence around the school I tried to tell them that it was not to keep our kids in but to keep other schools out that came (leuzinger and morningside) to cause trouble. My daughter Tammy married Kip Long, and my daughter PegiSue married Jim Stone (82) they all graduated from Hawthorne High School. I know that Holly Glen is trying to start their own high school but why not? Wiseburn has its own school district so why can't they have a high school also, instead of just grades K-8? Only 5% of the Dana kids go to Hawthorne. Must tell you something.
Hi Sharron, Thanks for your comments....

Message: John et al... Many of you know or know of my brother, Charlie. I wish to inform you all that Charlie has just been diagnosed with lung cancer. Currently, the disease is at a stage where surgery is not indicated. However, alternative treatments are planned. You should also know that Charlie is in very good spirits, and he plans to aggressively do battle with this thing to the best of his ability. Charlie has a long and difficult journey ahead of him, and we ask for your prayers and best wishes as he embarks. If you would like to send a good wish his way, or if you would like to track his progress, please email me and I will pass all messages on. Our warmest thanks.
Thanks Jim for the information on Charlie. Charlie boy, I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Now get after it with both barrels.

Message: When Russ Jacobson wrote in 1999 that he told me a lawyer joke that upset me and I hung up on him, it's absolutely not true. What happened was that he called me, we had a nice conversation and then I told him that I had to say good-bye because I had to go someplace (to a 49er game, as I recall). We cordially, I thought, said good-bye and that was it. Also, yes, my brother Jerrie was killed in a car accident in 1963.
Thanks Tommie for straighening that one out. Russ, did you exaggerate that story too? I remember your brother Jerrie. As I recall Eddie Verrault HHS62, was killed in the same accident.

Message: Looking in on the Wikipedia online and I came across this: John Frederick "Fred" Dryer (born July 6, 1946 in Hawthorne, California). He attended Lawndale High School and graduated in 1965. Wow...and not only he's a great football player but a good actor as well. I wonder if he still has ties in Hawthorne? I also noticed Hawthorne has Grown...from 53,000 when I lived there in 1984 to 84,000 now...wow..where did they put all em extra people?!!!! I also notice Hawthorne is listed in the 25th congressional district so I guess you should contact the current congressmen/women and make sure they get some more fundings for the schools to make sure our kids are well taken care of instead of robbing the fund bank for some other nitwit projects!

Message: RE: THE PICNIC - SEPT 27 - EL SEGUNDO RECREATIONAL PARK: OK.. For those of you that haven't signed up for the HHS picnic yet, I wouldn't wait till the last minute.. do it NOW or you may not get in on the games and prizes. I can only estimate how many will be taking part by the names in the sign up section. As for the "High Voltage Swine Toss" Well, I can't find any swine in Calif, only porcupine, but it's still up for a vote. I do know that we're talking about the "Water Balloon Toss," "Pass the Banana," "Three Legged Race" and a "Pie Eating Contest." Pictures will be taken at all game events. (and Heaven knows that Paco always gets one's best side when he's in charge of pics) And if you think the pie eating contest is a shoe-in.. think again. All this pie eating will go on with hands tied behind your back. Now, think of how that picture will look in CT the following day! No substitutes for those of you that are sugar, fat or carb sensitive. These contests will separate the men from the boys. There's a few more games that we're working on... but all in good time. I'm still trying to train the porcupines to stay rolled up in a ball. Back to the drawing board. JW
GEEZ Judy, why don't we just use hand grenades. They'll do a lot less damage. OK Cougs, sign up today (Jim Sloey, are you listening?) so Judy knows how many Porcupines to groom.

Message: My best friend, my brother, since I was 11 years old LeRoy Cannefax Hawthorne High, 1971 has been fighting throat cancer since November of last year. If any of you remember LeRoy or his brother Tom who passed away about 13 years ago please go to his web site and send him your prayers and well wishes. He has not been able to eat food for several months now and his recovery has been very slow, but as I understand this is not unusual for this type of cancer. Even if you didn't know LeRoy he is a great guy, father, and grandfather. Please send him your well wishes.

Message: I received a very nice letter from Principal Newell today acknowledging my donation and promising to remain in contact, keep us informed of the fundraising progress. Very quick response indeed. I think HHS is in good hands with principal Newell. On another note, just a reminder the CT Picnic and Chili Cook-Off is September 27. There are a lot of people on feedback right now and I think we need an update from Off-like-a-prom-dress Judy Wudy on the game activities. If you have not yet signed up, please visit the top of the page and sign in telling if you are bringing a prize winning recipe or not.
YES, it's time to get focused on the Picnic AND Cruise Night which is a mere 2 weeks away. Judy, how's the "High Voltage Swine Toss" progressing or did you decide against it?
