Message: Tracy Turner(78) and I just finished delivering all the trophies we were able to save and clean up back to the new principal at HHS. I was favorably impressed by principal Mark Newell. He has no illusions about the task he has before him! He did assure me that HHS would field a football team this year and he promised to pressure coach Swayne to get at least one victory this year. John you challenged all of us to step up and support athletics at HHS. I'll be glad to write a check but I'll also talk to the track coach because I'm willing to come back and coach track at HHS as I did in 80-81-82. We all must jump in, in the best way we can.
Great idea, Clark, and please donate through the donation page on this website so your name will go on the Sports Banner. Thanks also to you and Tracy for the Trophy cleanup campaign. If it wasn't for Clark, folks, all the HHS trophies from past years would have been in the dumpster.

Message: Seems to me that Royal Lord, Henry Cooper, Glenn Crist and others are simply saying, while we are waiting for Keith Jones to hit a fundraiser home run, lets not be complacent about acting now and taking personal responsibility. Everyone can write a check today if they have not already done so. If you can write a big one, great. If it is only $25, that helps too. But while waiting for the Jonesapolooza to take shape, we need CASH, cold and hard, to help the HHS Athletic Dept. So everyone get off the dime now and do what you can to help. Go to the link JB has posted and do something today. Home runs are great when they happen, but if the big one isn't in the cards, we can still make a good start if everyone takes personal responsibility. Dean
PS to Henry Cooper- Some folks say a whole lot in a few words, others say very little with a whole lot. Nothing to apologize for. You have prepaid your dues as others have said better than me.
Hey Dean, Thanks for that and yes Cougs, whatever you can do for our HHS will be appreciated. Please go here and fill out the form. The response so far has been real good, but I know we can do better. All donor's names will go on the HHS Sports Banner and you'll be invited to the special Donor Breakfast in October in the HHS Cafeteria. Thanks again to all our donors. I know the athletes at HHS appreciate it too.

Message: Cliff Rickson?s message reminded me of the many times my poor little body went flying across the field when Henry Cooper was holding the practice pad during practice and I had to block him. No one else came close to keeping it real as Henry did. But that?s OK Henry. When my memory fails me at times I just blame it on those days playing for good old HHS.

Message: Been working on the Sponsoship Plan for CougarFest and finding out some interesting things. Number one is how bigtime Chris Montez was and still is. His website is http://www.chrismontez.com/pages/home_frames.html
I had no idea. I used to watch him play in his garage down the street when I was a little kid. Anyway did Chris play any sports at HHS. I am putting together a list of people who played sports and went on to either play professionally or played at HHS and then went onto other successful careers. If anyone has any other people they know please tell me. Thanks
Keith, Chris didn't play sports at HHS. Mike Gillespie HHS58 played baseball at USC and went on to coach there after Rod Dedeaux. He has been a Yankee scout and is presently head coach at UC Irvine. Ron Mix info

Message: I have been very interested in all the recent email. But lets get back to a more important subject. Take another look at the picture used for the Bill Shultz entry in FEEDBACK from three days ago. WHAT DOES BILL HAVE IN HIS MOUTH? I think that little stunt cost Bill a 3 day vacation our senior year.
Looks like CHAW to me

Message: Just a quick question. Is there a Hawthorne High School Boosters Club? Basic membership could be $25 and graduated up from there. I seems like there might be, since there was talk of banners at HalCap field. Hey, if we can afford CT dues, what's another $25 (affordable to most).
Don't know that answer, Glenn...

Message: Keith, great ideas!! Rob Fukosaki (sp?) is a sports caster for ABC and I may be able to find a contact at ESPN. I'll try, just no promises. This thing that Keith is working on sounds very promising, but as some of you have stated, it may have to be something that we can do for next future sports funds. For this upcoming year, how about a good ol' fashion "Cougar Garage Sale or something?" It may not raise thousands, but it's more than nothing. I have some things I can donate, I'm sure others do too. It can work as a Cougar gathering. If the city of Hawthorne will allow it, we can have it on of the center island, where they have the parking lots. Great visibility and plenty of parking for those who want to buy stuff. And if you give me enough notice, we might even be able to add a health screening program for a donation. What do you say, you think it can work?
It sounds like a great idea, Maria.

Message: Okay I have just sent John the Press Release I put together. I am hoping he posts it up so everyone on here can give me your feedback. Please keep in mind I got C's and D's in English so it might be far from perfect but I am hoping everyone on here can give me your feedback and help make it perfect. It will be the lead-in page for the Sponsorship Package I am putting together. I will also be sending it out to all the local media including the major stations and ESPN. I do have a couple good contacts at ESPN cause they used to work in Hawaii and did some interviews with me. I just got to figure out how to get ahold of them. Also, what station does Rob Fukuzaki work at in LA. He too is from Hawaii and knows me so hopefully he can help get it on the news. So be kind to me on your grading.
Also, where can I get a list of HHS athletes that have done something major in sports. Like Mike Scott and Ron Mix. Does anyone have a list they can send me.
Keith, Google Mike Scott, Ron Mix, Scott Laidlaw, Curtis Conway, Mike Marsh, etc. There is no list. I'll be gone this afternoon but will try to get on this later today. Thanks for the help...

Message: Received this email from Diane Fiello HHS68 and Assistant Superintendent of the CVHUSD. She writes:
Hello, John, I've been meaning to write to you for some time now. I am the assistant superintendent of Centinela Valley UHSD and a HHS 68 alumnus. It was I who suggested to Mark Newell (HHS principal) that he contact you, and I am amazed at what's happened as a result of that suggestion! I am getting a kick out of the feedback comments. There appears to be a lot of misinformation out there. As the assistant superintendent, I have the correct information as well as the rationale behind all decision-making and am happy to add clarification to the discussion.
I have only recently returned to the district, and it's difficult for me to express how meaningful (and fun!) it is to be working for the school system that launched all of us into adulthood. I was hired as part of the new team who has been given the responsibility to reform the district. I am honored to have been given this opportunity. It is, as you know, a different district than it was when we were here in the 60s, but in so many respects it's still the same.
I also want to thank you for the active role you have agreed to take on behalf of our athletics program. I told Mark that you were able to reach a few thousand people, but I really didn't realize how much you would do or how immediately you would get results! I would like to work closely with you and assist in any way I can, as an alumnus and as the assistant superintendent. In either of those capacities, I'm here to help. Please contact me so we can chat. Also, feel free to share this message with others.

Hi Diane and thanks so much for being there for all of us Cougars. With you as Asst. Supt. we now have someone to talk with and share ideas. I'm sure too, you can add clarity to any district rumors, HHS and others. Thanks also to you, and to all of our donors, for your donation to our HHS Athletics Program. I will add your email address to the website so all who have questions or ideas can contact you directly. Also feel free to chime in here at anytime, adding your comments or clarifications. I will talk with you soon.

Message: Wow, I go on vacation and everything changes. John, I'll be talking the wife into sending a tax deductible check to the principal's office as soon as I get my feet back on the ground. I just lost two family members, during what was supposed to be a vacation. What time did the Earth Quack hit? Debbie and I flew out of Las Vegas at 7am. We didn't feel it before that. I was hoping to hook up with Keith while I was there, but he must have been too busy. I did get a chance to see Andrea Little class of 80 and her son twice. Andrea, now that I know you're reading, start posting something, I'm sure there are people out there that would like to here from you. And maybe you could help Keith with some of paper work ahead. Oh Hey Keith, did your Daughter have the baby yet? I know you're planning a trip to Hawaii when she does. We will miss your postings.
Hi Rick, Thanks for the donation and please click on the HHS SPORTS banner, above, and fill that out before sending the check, so your name can be added to our list, which I'm still working on.

Message: I hope this doesn't bring the wrath down upon me, but I am going to cautiously step in here in defense of an old friend. Some walk the walk, and others talk the talk. Henry Cooper was a star athlete at HHS. He led the league his sophomore, junior and senior year (and probably freshman year as a ?B) in tackles, playing a linebacker on the varsity football?s defensive squad. He also probably played every down of every game those three years since he was also the offensive center. He was first team on the Daily Breeze and third team on the Los Angeles Times (all CIF) teams his senior year. When the ?Ole Coach? stepped back into the lead as Head Coach, and there was ?Summer League? in the park, Henry got asked not to ?play,? because he went after the man not the flag. He just couldn?t help himself, he just liked to ?hit? too much. If the recent HHS squads had even half a starting lineup with the likes of Henry, their results in the past few years might not have been what they were, and they might not have the problems with finances they are having. So, I am ready to ?put my money where my mouth is.? It?s easy to propose all of these solutions, but at this point in time we just have to jump in and get the job done. If Ma Baker can pledge $250 then so can I. Many, including some current ?cats,? are not as fortunate. Not everyone can contribute financially. But, we all can give in our own way. Anyone who lives close enough to HHS can be a mentor, academically or otherwise. It is easy to criticize how different HHS is than ?when we were there.? I visited less than a year ago. I saw courtesy, and hope, and students trying to better themselves. It made me smile a lot. By the way, John hasn?t really advertised it, but he has once again proven thru his efforts that Cougartown is the best high school website in the world. If you go to the HHS Sports History window, you can search by year, sport or opponent and find most of the HHS sports scores. Not everything is there; much needs to be added and corrections need to be made. Hopefully, pages will be added as time allows. Personally I?m hoping for a tribute to the 1953 Pioneer League Championship Football Team. After all, that was where the start of Hawthorne High School?s aspirations of sports glory began. That can happen again. Hey, Coach Chauncey, how ?bout sharing a little sports history here.
Hi Glenn, Yes, we do have a proud history, sports and otherwise, at HHS. I remember the 59 football team like it was yesterday. Some were in my class (Jim Reale, Ron Petch, Dan Dye) and many others who are now Ctowners (John Hagethorn, Russ Jacobsen, Royal Lord and on and on). These guys and their teams are who put HHS at the top of the list, sports-wise. We really need to get HHS back to this level.
The HHS Sports History was compiled by Glenn and myself from El Molinos, Cougar Newspapers, and former Coaches. Like Glenn said, it is far from complete, but should give a sense of the last half century of sports at HHS. Thanks very much Glenn, and to all our Cougartowners who've donated so far. You are keeping HHS sports and its history alive. This whole thing will turn around, I'm sure, with our help.

Two more Hawthorne bands: "Shades Of Grey" and "The Little Kings"(HHS and Lennox).
Hey Lar', good groups there, and to all our donors who've stepped up to the plate for the HHS Athletics donations, thanks so much for caring. It's going to be a real battle for the next month, but the way it's going, this is a real positive sign. Thanks to all our donors for your help. Your names will go on the Sports page as soon as I get a little time.
