Message: John, saw your message back to Rick about leaving a last name. I think the only exception might be DEAN. I think if you mention Dean you mean Dean Stafford. Maybe Cougar #1. During my years at HHS there were two major fashion events; Tom Mc Cann shoes called TWISTERS and an Army surplus coverall that was off white and had a hood. DEAN was the first guy I saw with one and within a month everyone had one. John, I think you wore one. Within two months my cousins in Iowa was calling asking how to get them.
I don't remember the fashions but do remember Dean. He was the very best. The great do die young.

Message: This message is for Carolyn Darlington in Bellevue Washington. I'm not from the class of 57, but does it count if I was born that year, were still Cougars in Washington.
Hey John, my wife Debbie (maiden name Anderson) is flying home tonight from there. She went to a wedding down there with lots of Cougar sightings that she will be posting tomorrow. Last time she posted, there was no picture of her, can you find one for me, so I can make fun of her, like she does me?
First of all who are you? You have to leave your full name so people know who's leaving the feedback. Also the pictures are added by the name you leave. There is no picture for just plain Rick. Also, if your picture is titled 75deborah-anderson.gif and you leave the name Debbie Anderson, it won't be found, at least not until you're added to the alias list. How your name is spelled on the Alumni List is how your picture is listed.

Message: Fathers day is the 15th John. It has been pushing 100 degrees in Atlanta with humidity hovering around 75%. Have actually gotten use to it. Still would rather be by the ocean again though. Maybe S. Carolina or Oregon. Man, I wish I had someone out here to watch the Laker games with. People out here hate the Lakers. I might be flying out that way in December. Is there an event planned with Cougartown around then? Would love to go to Fosters or something. Well, back to the pool.
Sorry Jim, Nothing in December unless someone wants to plan a mini-reunion somewhere. We had one last night, planned by Tom Shelley HHS62, at the Old Town Music Hall in El Segundo. About 15 of us went to see Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire in the classic, Follow the Fleet. Lots of fun just being with this group of Cougars and Cougar spouses. Thanks again Tom for the invite.

Message: OH BOY, DOWN MEMORY LANE! BUT IT WAS FIRST GRADE, DENNIS. I DIDN'T GET TO GO TO KINDERGARDEN BECAUSE MY SISTER HAD JUST BEEN BORN AND MY MOTHER WAS SURE I WOULD BRING ALL KINDS OF BAD BUGS HOME. CAUSED A LIFETIME OF RESENTMENT (HAHA) MY FAVORITE JOB WAS MILK MONITOR. I CAN STILL REMEMBER WALKING DOWN THE HALLS WITH THE LITTLE CARTONS OF MILK AND FEELING SO IMPORTANT. LIFE WAS SO SIMPLE THEN. DO YOU REMEMBER WRIGLEYS MARKET ON AVIATION BLVD? I DECIDED TO RUN AWAY AND ON THE WAY PICKED UP A CUTE DOG. DECIDED THAT HE NEEDED TO EAT SO WENT INTO THE MARKET AND STOLE A BOX OF MILK BONES. OF COURSE I GOT CAUGHT AND THEY CALLED MY MOTHER, BOY WAS I IN TROUBLE. I THINK THAT WAS THE THIRD GRADE. NEVER DID THAT AGAIN. CURED ME OF EVEN THINKING ABOUT TEENAGE SHOPLIFTING.

Message: Went to Serra, but spent 3 summers at HHS recovering. Know a lot of Ol timers are Beach Boys' fans. I came across a CD last weekend, though you might want to check it out. Rockabye Baby, Lullaby Renditions of The Beach Boys. Really mellow, downloaded it on my work computer, very soothing and a nice job. BTW a lot of Cougars have mentioned my mom Grace Rinaldi who taught at holy Joe's many years. I'm happy to say she will be 92 this August and going strong. If anyone wants to touch base with her, please e-mail me. She loves hearing from "her" students.
Hi Fred, Love those Beach Boy sounds. Also hope your mom gets a few emails. Thanks very much....

Message: I saw Dean mentioned Mr. Tamburino. The little league field was a place where all the Holy Glen met up to watch us play baseball. Mr. Frye had his chair right behind the snack shack in between the two fields so he could watch both games at once. I remember one playoff game I was catching Mr. Tamburino was out in center field beating up someone with his cane. He and my dad were very good friends. I remember Benny Beard as a feisty fireplug. Those times back then are still the best. We really had some fun. Dean if I recall played on the Braves with my brother Les. Either that or he played on the Vikings. Can't remember. But that year when my bro was 12 they had some awesome players in that little league. How about that really tall guy. I think his last name was Adams. he was well over 6' tall at 12 years old. I remember chasing down foul balls and getting a winner sucker for turning it in. I was small enough back then to fit down the sewer drain and get balls. Man I was tiny.

Message: I'm going to jump in here and add my fondest memories of Tambo's coaching and escapades that have stayed with me throughout the years. Even though I grew up on the other side of Hawthorne, east of Inglewood Ave, Bill coached myself and His Boy Rocky Thomas through some of the best baseball, football, and basketball seasons ever. As Bill has mentioned, his mentors were great fathers and gentlemen of the city. Bill also was a fantastic coach and mentor to us growing up. Teamwork, accountability, and friendships were made through Bills humor and style of coaching. Always encouraging us to work together and have fun the teams he had on the east side of town, Memorial, looked forward to playing Hollyglen Park because we knew we were playing some of the best talent in the City. When we all arrived at HHS we blended our talents together and this made for some league championship teams in three sports and some all CIF, Bay, and Ocean league athletes. Bill also spent countless seasons calling Hawthorne Pop Warner football games on Sundays. One of his favorite lines was, "Today, Mister Bruv Greasby is here with his world famous diaperbag". Contents inside bag came from Colorado. When people from other cities talked of Pop Warner games at Hawthorne, they spoke fondly of the game announcer who's voice echoed their son's name as he played football. Bill brought fun and laughter where ever he went. SC/Notre Dame games in November, standing on the sideline with Ara, painting ourselves green, and trying to find a ride home following these games...These were the best of times. I'm sorry I could make the reunion at Dodger Stadium, I still have my sons games to attend to. I'm here coaching at the Fountain Valley High, with the same enthusiasm as I was taught. Thank You Bill, you are a great mentor yourself and a class act. The Middle League season of 1970 saw the Indians of Hawthorne American beat the Dodgers of Hawthorne National in the City Play-offs. Tambo was in center field holding court, I almost swallowed my chewing tobacco.....The City of Good Neighbors has produced some of the best mentors of all time.

Message: Note to Gary Bickers: I am not surprised to hear about Ron Peterson being a leader on your basketball team. I remember when we were in Park League and Ron was our coach he drilled us for hours on basketball fundamentals at the Eucalyptus gym. The rebounding drills were most intense, 1 on 1, contests between two players. He pushed us to the edge where you wanted to clean your opponent's clock in the drill and this was your teammate! Anyway, Ron always had a good word to say about all his players after we went through his fun practices. If you were lucky, he would take some of his players surfing with him, so he really was a pretty good guy. I guess he instilled a competitive drive in many of his young players way back when. I think once again this is the kind of Hawthorne toughness Bill Tamburrino was talking about in his story. I don't ever remember getting hugs, kisses and smiley faces just for showing up. Effort and performance mattered, even if it was just park league basketball for middle schoolers.
