Message: Yes Joyce, I remember Fun Haven over there by Sears in Inglewood. That was the place to go for Halloween costumes as well but I remember especially for gag gifts to play pranks on your friends. Is it still there?
Hi Madeline, Fun Haven is no longer there.

Message: Bob Cole's dance studio is still there on LaBrea...but the sign just says "dance studio" upstairs. I've thought of going in just to see how much it has changed...but that might be too depressing.

Message: Keith, yes I remember Moore's Dancewear and it's still there, and you're right it is right off of the 405 fwy but the street is Redondo Beach Blvd which is right before you get to Artestia then Artesia and Redondo Beach Blvd merge as you go towards Hawthorne Blvd. Although I never went there for dance we used to always go there for dance wear for Dance Class when I was attending Haw High when I was in Modern Dance and also for costumes for Halloween. It's still there and hasn't changed one bit in 40 years I take my grandaughters there for clothes. It's comforting to know some favorite places from our past are still the very same, not many, but for the ones that are, I try to pass those on to my grandchildren.

Message: Just read George Johnson's mention of Red Hill wine and the memory of the taste came right back to me. On occasion we "sipped" it rustic style...finger hooked through the jug handle and bottle resting on shoulder. Refined, so refined.
Oh yeah, "Red Mountain style"...the classic sipping technique handed down from my Missouri kin. The classic way to enjoy a truly fine vintage.

Message: Cougar sighting phantom styleI was born on an orange ranch in a little town of Placentia. The old place is now an Orange County museum and some special events are held there. Last Saturday I had a call from my grandaughter who was attending a wedding there. She was sitting at a table with Mike Bradford class of 1980. I remember him well as a member of the championship basketball team. Told my grandaughter to put a fire under Mike to log in so hope we may be hearing from him.
Hey George, Good one there boy. Thanks very much for the sighting. Hope to see you at the next Cruise in August. It has been awhile since we've seen your smiling face.

Message: Hi Ingrid, you don't know me but when you mentioned Bob Cole's Dance Studio it caught my attention because if you are talking about the one that is on Hawthorne Blvd in Inglewood just before La Brea I believe, I used to go there for dance, tap and ballet, my aunt brought myself and my cousins for years back in the late 50's and early 60's. We used to be in the parades that Bob Cole was part of and I can remember marching down Hawthorne Blvd twirling my baton...I thought this was the greatest. I drive by there now sometimes and the area has changed so much it's really quite sad but I can remember those times like they were yesterday. One evening I remember we were doing a dance recital and I could hear this familiar voice coming up the stairs to the studio and it was Soupy Sales, remember him and he was there doing some sort of routine with Bob and it was amazing, those were the days!!!! Thank you for that memory.....
SOUPY SALES!!! Now you're talkin' OH-LE-OH-LE-OH!!

Message: I remember those days going to the dancing lessons at Bob Cole's Dance Studio. Although I don't recall either of my brothers coming along, I'm sure they must have gone along a few times. And what a drag it must have been for them to have to hang around and wait. I'm sure Ketcham's Sporting Goods was far more entertaining for them. I've got to give a shout out to my bro - Neil - and thank him for remembering my b-day today. He did good, I had a phone call with my other brother, Eric, earlier today, and he didn't even realize it was my birthday until after we hung up.

Message: John, KB&S later known as AB&S was the sporting goods store around. Dale Foster Leuzinger '51, was the team rep for most of the schools in the Centinela Valley, working for AB&S. He began the team sales and team room in the store. I wore PUMA'S at HHS for football, and by my senior year most of the players were wearing them. Foster would bring "samples" of PUMA'S and allow me the task of trying them out. The kangaroo hides were the best. AB&S had the best supply of gear for every sport. Rawlings gloves, and uniforms, Hillerich and Bradsby Louisville Sluggers Bats, PUMA, Riddle, Adidas, Converse, Jack Purcell's the list goes on. I still have the Rawlings Trapeez model glove from 1970. List price was $42.00 then, $275.00 today. Baseballs were $1.10 for a Rawlings, Wilson, or Spaulding. Wood Bats went for $5.00-$7.00. Today some of the kids on our High School team have $300.00 bats, the $200.00 dollar glove, $150.00 shoes and extras. Next door to AB&S was the laundramat used by all the high schools for their athletic/P.E. towels. Ketcham's moved south on Hawthorne Blvd. then folded up shop.
Thanks Wade....Things have gone up, huh

Message: Hey Cougs, Also, I forgot to mention that at a memorial service for the wife of Carroll Adams, a former Hawthorne High VP, I ran into Charlie Tyskiewicz (Coach T), Sid Semon and Otto Plum. Retirement is treating thsm wery well, lots of golf, tennis and lunch with old friends. Sid Semon is a little Dick Clarkish.....not aging at all!
Hey Tammy, I think Coach Adams was a Leuzinger coach when I was matriculating through the halls of HHS. Good to hear the coaches are all doing great. Saw Coach Plum at our last Cruise Night and Coach Sid, where are you?

Message: Dennis C & Paco... et.al. - Directly above Ketcham's, on the second floor was located Bob Cole Dance Studio. Our sister Ingrid took dance classes there. Cole taught all forms of dance he could be seen in many of the Santa Claus Lane Parades of old. Cole's daughter was a "Miss California" I think?... Countless little children learned ballet, tap, soft shoe & "tumbling" from Old Man Bob Cole. The entrance to the Dance studio was on the A. V. North side of the building, just a small stair case. I had to sit through Ingrid's classes some times, so I would manage to sneak down and roam the aisles of Ketcham's rather than watch "heel & toe" for 30 minutes...By The Way Happy Birthday to My Favorite "Little" sister...Ingrid will be one year younger today! Wonder if she can still Tour Jete, Pirouette or Arabesque ?
My daughter, Kelly, was a Bob Cole grad too. I think she still dances like me though. Happy Birthday Ingrid....

Message: Hey Paco, You?re not losing your mind. I?m sure you were thinking of Bob Ketchum Sporting Goods Hawthorne Blvd. & Arbor Vitae St. Inglewood. Coach Plum had me buy my German low top football shoes there and that was where we got our hooded sweat shirts. On the North West side of the Blvd was where Sally?s Drive Inn was located.
Hey Dennis, wasn't KB&S (later AB&S when the "K", Ketcham, went solo) Sporting Goods up there.

Just having your web site to go to, helps lots of us Cougars all over the world feel like we're home again. I'm also looking forward to seeing what Debbie is going to say on the web page about all her Cougar sightings. I'll be scolding her, if she doesn't do it today.

Message: I'd like to know if any Cougs have the recipe for Butterscotch topping? I've tried several recipes but none of them come close to the old butterscotch like Foster's used to have. You know, the kind that almost makes you Cough if you take too big a spoonful. Please let me know if you have one that may have been passed down or is tried and true. Thanks, been trying to fatten my husband since he had surgery and lost lots of weight. Karen
