Message: Cougar Sighting. While working at Disney's Hollywood Studios I came across a guest taking a picture of the Hollywoodland billboard. I asked him if he knew about Hollywoodland and he replied he was from Southern California. I told him I was from Hawthorne and he told me he graduated from Hawthorne High. After talking for a few minutes I realized he was Joe Bernhardt and graduated with Sandy (Bunch) and myself. I got to meet his wife, daughter and grandchild, it's a small world even 3000 miles from your hometown.

Message: In the 1970s I heard that the teachers were afraid of the principals, principals were afraid of the district administrations or school boards, the administrations or school boards were afraid of the parents, the parents were afraid of their children/the students, and the students were afraid of no one. In the
following article, it reported: Said one teacher, on being asked why too few delinquents are reported or punished: "The teachers are afraid of the principals. The principals are afraid of their superintendents. The superintendents are afraid of the board [of education], and the board is afraid of the truth. Everybody is afraid but the kids?and they seem to be afraid of nobody." Things haven't changed except the teachers seem to be more cautious on how they state the problems.

Message: Lots going on this week...In the past week I have had two Cougar Sightings both work related. At my former dealership, from a few days ago, turns out one of the guys I worked with is a Hawthorne grad Alfredo Ramirez C/O 2005. I got him turned on to Cougartown. Now my new dealership OC Nissan of Irvine, Joe Lamonica C/O ? is the service manager and assisted me on getting on there. Seems like we have had this discussion on kids today & lack of discipline before on feedback...Blame it on Dr Spock!!!!! That really was the start of it all...

Message: Hey folks long time no write. But the verbage on Otto Plum caught my eye. He was the head coach of the "B" team in 1957, along with Sid Smith. Most of us were sophomores, with a few "older guys". Remember it was " heigth, weight, and age" that determined what level you could play at back then. The younger ones, Sophs, went on to the, I'm sorry to bring it up, but the 59 CIF team. The B team went 8-0 in the Pioneer league in 1957 and allowed 33 points in 8 games that year. Coach Plum said at our awards banquet that this was a group of kids to watch in the future. Maybe? As I recall the varsity won their Pioneer league championship also. When they went to CIF they had been hit by a flu bug and about 3/4 of the starters were gone when they played the game.. They lost to a tough Whittier team. But, I still believe that this varsity team was probably one of, if not the best group of athletes to play at HHS through the history of our school. Just thought I'd throw my .02 cents in there. Have a great golf tourney you Cougs. Was glad I got to make it last year. not so this time. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU, Jake N Jude

Children Learn What They Live By Dorothy Law Nolte
If children live with criticism, They learn to condemn. If children live with hostility, They learn to fight. If children live with ridicule, They learn to be shy. If children live with shame, They learn to feel guilty. If children live with encouragement, They learn confidence. If children live with tolerance, They learn to be patient. If children live with praise, They learn to appreciate. If children live with acceptance, They learn to love. If children live with approval, They learn to like themselves. If children live with honesty, They learn truthfulness. If children live with security, They learn to have faith in themselves and others. If children live with friendliness, They learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

Message: While everyone still has basketball on the brain I remember a post Danny Litton put up a couple months ago regarding the best players out of HHS in the 50s and 60s. I'm almost sure I saw Paul Crowell play at HHS in 69 when I was a sixth grader. He was awesome. I remember arriving at HHS in the early 70s and hearing about a legendary point guard named Dribblin Danny Litton. Guess Dannys legendary modesty prevented him from including himself in the list of the greats but he was definitely one of them!
