Message: Sandy, I am so sorry to hear about Fred's passing. I didn't know him well but so many of my memories of some of our most exciting football games, were of watching Fred, Bobby Hunter and Jim Reale....Your brother was a neat guy and it sounds like he's had a very good life. God bless you, Sandy, all of your family and all of Fred's family and may all of you be comforted with your many memories of Fred.

Message: I certainly remember the Inglewood Train Depot. From the ages of three to six my family lived in Inglewood at Inglewood Ave. and Florence. The Depot was located on Florence just east of Eucalyptus. The railroad tracks were right across the street from my home by the old Kroehler?s factory and the railway station was just down the street past the ice house. I didn?t hang out at the station much but I fondly remember crossing the street and playing on the railroad cars with my brother. Our favorite was the caboose of course. I remember finding some bacon once in the small ice box on board that for some reason just fascinated me. I think it might have belonged to the hobos that sometimes slept there. We never did any harm but we usually would eventually get chased away by the Santa Fe employees.
Thanks Jer'....

Message: "Another man done gone" (Hot Tuna).... so sorry to hear about Danny. I can still see his pony tail flying....at a very high rate of speed...out the back of his football helmet! I remember when the coaching staff told us all to get haircuts, but had to change their minds after we refused. It was so satisfying to overcome expectations, and play in the post season. Peace to Danny's family.....

Message: It saddened me to hear of the passing of Danny Rael. What a great competitor he was on the football field, with such speed and acceleration in getting around the defense. Danny's cousin Ernie Rael was a daily visitor to the Gioia household back in the day. He was a friend and classmate of my older brother's (at Serra High) and they both went off to college together. Ernie later became one of the early software developers out in Silicon Valley -- even before the dawn of the personal computer. The Raels were a talented family.

Message: Death of a Cougar - My brother, Fred Ragatz (Class of 1960) ended his battle with cancer on Friday, January 25, in Reno. After graduating from Hawthorne High, Fred attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he met Carolyn his wife of almost 40 years. He and Carolyn lived in Modesto where they raised their son Bill and daughter Jennifer. Fred continued his love of football and coached youth football for 25 years. After losing Carolyn, Fred moved to Reno where his daughter Jennifer and family live. Over the years, we bragged to each other about our families and he reminisced about the magical time spent at Hawthorne High, of Coach Chauncey, Bobby Hunter and others.
Hi Sandra, So sorry to hear the news about Fred. Saw him last year at the Class of 54-60 Reunion in Long Beach. My sincerest condolences to you and the rest of the family.

Message: Yes I can still see Danny rounding right end and knowing no one could catch him before he crossed the goal line for another Cougar 6 points. I always enjoyed sitting near his parents and sharing the fun. Of course Danny's Mom was very special to me as she always served my lunch in the cafeteria with a big smile and pleasant word and as the old saying goes- the way to a mans heart is through his stomach. The last time I saw the family was in the 1980's. My wife and I were vacationing on our motorcycle and were at Lake Isabella looking for a place to camp for the night and saw a sign to a campground so turned down the one way dirt road. Then we saw the sign "no motorcycles allowed". There was no way to turn around so had to continue to the parking lot planning to make a quick U turn and get out before getting shot. Then I saw the office sign with the name on it and remembered Danny's parents had retired there. About then Dan's Dad came out on the porch yelling can't you read-no motorcycles allowed. I recognized him so pulled off my helmet and we had a great laugh. Of course he should have chased us out but instead gave us the best campsite right along the river. Several of you students were also there and we had a great Cougar reunion. I want to thank Danny and all his family for all the great friendship, excitement and fun memories they gave all of us at HHS. God bless you and give you peace.

Message: I got home from the service today for Danny Rael and was truly disheartened about the turn out for him. With my sister attending with me, there maybe have been one handful of Cougars to bid farewell to a great athlete and friend. I know alot of us may live to far away to make the journey, but I feel more of us could have paid our condolences and showed support to the family. Especially those of us who grew up with the Raels. The tribute that one of his nephews put together, was very touching. And Rick, Danny's brother, made a beautiful speech, though fighting back the tears, about growing up and hanging out with his older brothers, losing touch, and then coming back together again hoping to continue their relationship. That was cut short do to his illness and the Lord calling Danny home. Mr. Ross, Erica and Eric showed great strength and Erica's mom sang a beautiful song of praise and worship. It was a nice service all together. Even though our families grew apart, we all will remember Danny Rael. Peace be with you.

Learned that "off-the-line" count method from Jay Watkins who owned Bill's Service in Manhattan Beach and who owned a very fast F/stock 58 Chev. I wish I had a picture of that car.

Message: I'm sorry about the loss of Danny. I was a friend of his from work (Garrett/Allied Signal/Honeywell) I worked with Danny for 25+ years. Somehow thru the grapevine at work, word was spreading about his passing. I was able to find out more about him online at the HHS web site. Nobody on the web site mentioned anything about Erica and Eric. I hope they are doing okay. Could you please pass on my condolesence to them as I will be unable to attend tomorrow's service. I knew Danny very well seeing how I spent 8 hours a day, 5 to 6 days a week with him. He always told me how much he loved his family. I last saw him 2 - 2 1/2 years ago and he seemed to be doing well. He has a lot of people who cared about him at work and everybody's asking questions. When you feel strong enough, could you please write me and let me know what happened. I would appreciate it. Again, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Jon Ross

Message: Recently elected Vice President Sandra Suarez of The Centinela Valley Union High School District requests the presence of John Baker and Hawthorne High School's Alumni at Leuzinger's 11th Annual Memorabilia Day. It takes place on Saturday March 1st, 2008. The official flyer is posted on Leuzinger's Class of 1981 Website News and it contains the days schedule and list of events. The students will be selling and serving lunch just like we remember from Spirit Week. And, the campus will be free of the chaotic, noisy swirl of adolescence. The students that will be in attendance are the best of the best. They are interested in making this day very special. If all works out well, you'll see similar events being held on The Hawthorne and Lawndale High School Campus' next year. Please come out and show your support for the students and the community. John... Sandra's invitation is a personal one especially to you. She knows what a hard working and upstanding citizen you are. She would love to see you there. Thank You!
Hey Terrence, Well CONGRATULATIONS Sandra, on the new position and I will certainly try to make this one, even though our Cruise Night is March 1st.
I met Sandra at a meeting before Memorabilia Days a few years ago and SHE is the hard worker, that's for sure. I had the best time that day digging through old Hawthorne artifacts and running into old friends I hadn't seen in years. Folks, if you can make this event please do, as you will truly enjoy the experience.
