Message: When I moved to Yuma, I tossed several matchbook covers from restaurants, etc. that don't exist anymore. If I had been thinking, I should have snapped a photo and FW'd to John! Wasn't Pieces of Eight located in Marina Del Rey? If memory serves me right, it was a favorite after the prom, Christmas dance, etc. place to eat.
Thanks Cheri....

Thanks John, picture courtesy of Jerry Miles.

Message: In the early 70s, I used to bowl in a league at "Carolina Lanes" (at the time I think they called it Glen Allison Lanes). It was a strange place even then -- the bar was topless (it had not yet been turned into "Nudes, Nudes, Nudes") and even though we were a Saturday morning league, there would be salty old characters lurking around. Among the Cougars I can recall in that league off the top of my head were Omar Azze, Robert Bates, Greg Franklin, Rick Hale and Bob Knepper. Somewhere I have a standings sheet from that league showing my sterling 130 average! Several years later, Glen Allison bowled a perfect 900 series (3 straight 300 games) but had it disqualified because they found the lanes had been grooved (I think he did it at a bowling alley in Downey or thereabouts).

Message: Cool match books. What is the address for the Pieces of Eight? I went to some place after a backwards dance one year, and (as with many things) it slips my mind, but could of been the P of 8. Was it in the Hollywood Hills? Are these out of your personal collection John?
Yes, but I'll be darned if I can find them right now. Cheryl Christensen sent them to me about 10 years ago and the picture was done then. I'll have to search the ol' Ctown archives for them.

Message: Ron Kritz, I remember your brother Jack and his really cool "56 Buick Century. Gene Guterrez and I used to stop and talk to him about his car all the time. It was Burgundy(?) with white tuck and roll inside. He (and you) lived at the North end of Sundale next to Imperial Hwy, West side. I bought a '56 buick like his except I didn't have the cash to do what he did. I also bought a '57 Olds like Alan Hauge but someone borrowed it and never brought it back. Great memories.

Message: Hi there! Looking for other HHS classmates. I'm tired of missing the "Reunions"! Forget that! Let's just get together! I've got a myspace, yes I did just type that!...myspace.com/kittymathieson has my art work and landscapes. Email me please at kittymathieson@yahoo.com. I would love to hear from you all. I recently hooked-up with Chris Oliver...Christine Oliver and she is still singing only now as a professional jazz singer, opening for Al Jarreau. Her CD is fabulous...then Beth Santos...little Beth? She just married the dude from OC - the chopper guy...and then Dale Hahlbeck is still silly and around. I've found a few people and they're all quite well-preserved if I say so myself! We could get at least a few people together just for a beach hang-out and bar-b-que. I want to get together before I croak for cripe's sake! Wah wah wah...remember me? Voted "Biggest Mouth" (and WHO came up with that one anyway??!) as well as ASB Prez...lookin' for more of us. EMail me. I'm waiting! Hugs, Kitty Mathieson

Message: The entire class of 76 mourns the passing of our classmate Danny Rael. It is great to see so many tributes on Cougartown! When any Cougar passes it diminishes the HHS community but for the 76ers it is a more personal loss. Our mortality becomes much more real when our classmates start passing away! For those of you from earlier or later classes who did not know Danny, you probably figured out from all the tributes that he was the football "stud" of our class. Every class seems to have one, 71 had Laidlaw, 73 had Howse, Skulick and Greasby, 74 had McCallister, but Danny was our guy. He was the guy you came to the game to watch. Danny loved his white football shoes that were a little flashy but he could back his cockiness up with his performance on the field. USC had student body left or right, HHS had 10 fly or 11 fly which was essentially Rael left or right. If Danny turned the corner before the defenders realized what was happening, it was all over, HHS 6 points. I was honored to compete with Dan for 4 years at HHS for 8 different sport seasons. I think many who saw Dan play will agree that he was probably the best football player at HHS who did not go on to play college ball. Rest well my friend Dan!

Message: My very deepest sympathy to Mike and the rest of the Rael Family. What a tragic loss. Danny was such a great guy. His compassionate nature and his wonderful sense of humor will truly be missed. How unfortunate... that the last time I spoke to Danny... was when he called to tell me about Robert's passing. He was so very distraught at the loss of his brother. I think about the Rael brothers often. They will always hold a special place in my memories and in my heart. Danny and Robert...may you both rest in peace.

Message: God Bless Danny. I met danny when I was about 8 years old. played Pop Warner against him most of the time. It wasn't until high school that we were on the same team. X slot 10 fly. and the ball had better be out in front of him because danny would be half way around the end on the pitch. He was always flying down the field his ponytail flapping in the wind. I saw Danny at the 30 year reunion Pre-party, we sat and talked about old times, playing football, choking on smog at the Hollyglen football field/Baseball diamond, playing on Halcap field and parties, Danny will always be a treasured friend to me. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Rael family. I am truly sorry for your loss. I will miss him. Kirk

Message: I am always sorry to hear when young Cougars end up on our ever growing Tribute section. Danny Rael was a BIG reason how the 1974-75 Cougar football team made it to the Semi Finals and pulled the upset of #1 Loyola that year. Just like Ken Mcallister before him he was fast enuf to make the "86 Dive" actually be a successful running play. As a lineman, all ya had to do was give Danny a crease, and he would run to daylight and usually a touchdown. I saw Danny at his 10 year reunion and luckily had a chance to walk down memory lane a bit, as well as relive some Glory Days. I told him I couldn't believe he never got tackled by someone pulling his long hair. He had longer hair then Linda Cooke and most of his other fine girlfriends!! I am sorry I can't make the services, but I look forward to seeing Danny someday in that heavenly football field up yonder, and would love to strap on the gear to block on one more "84 Able" for a Rael TD. Danny for now just follow Big Mac up the middle, and I'll be there later to join the team. Miss ya Danny H1 OUT!
