Message: Saw the posted picture of the Pop Warner team from '67. I was asked to speak at the opening day event at HHS that year. I think I upset a number of would be coaches by telling the kids to just have fun. I didn't realize how important it was to win at 8 years old. I also never understood watching two fat guy coaches have 9 year olds running wind sprints. Last I looked, 9 year olds could run all day anyway. It's not like little guy football is important; like my golf game for instance.

Message: HHS Journalism Tradition: Dick Dixon's note on Linda McVeigh reminded me of the historical tradition at HHS for training quality writers who went on to make their mark in the field of journalism. Miss Clara McGinty was known to the early 60s classes as the Konnie Krislock of her era. Along with Linda McVeigh who made history at Radcliffe and Harvard, and later as Linda Matthews working for the LA Times as a foreign correspondent in China, Miss McGinty inspired another writer, Marilyn Morris Chase of Stanford and UC Berkeley who blossomed into one of the nation's leading medical science writers. Marilyn worked for over two decades for the New York Times and Wall Street Journal covering medical research and clinical science of diseases such as AIDS as well as historical research on the bubonic plague in early 20th Century San Francisco described in her 2003 book "The Barbary Plague". My guess is Miss McGinty inspired many other writers who have contributed their wisdom, wit and insights over the years. Anyone know some of these early HHS writers?
Good question, Dean.... anyone?

Message: Championship Sunday and the end of the Barrett Jackson zillion dollar annual car funfest 'n auction. Ouch, zero degrees (-14 chill factor) in Indianapolis this morning. Just on CT and in regards to the Linda McVeigh - ASB Prexy info here's my take. Linda and I were connected to the political scene in '63 at HHS. She was actually the class president in her soph year and editor of the Cougar paper thereafter. Actually, the ASB Presidents in '62-'63 were Don Allen and Lynn Brooks (I was the vp). And yes, Linda had more brains than most. She authored, One-Billion-the history of China, post her Harvard-Ratcliff days. Last time I heard Linda was writing for the a national news bureau. One bright woman who was major at HHS. Racing season starts next week with the Rolex 24 Hour from Daytona ... plan to go to the warmth of FL for the weekend. Cheers 'n gears to all Cougs. Hey JB ... add Indiana to the states Cougs reside in. Yak on the 'bench' soon.
Hi Dick, The Stats page get all the information directly from the database. If there's no address listed in Indy, it won't show it. Maybe you haven't changed your info since moving. Click here to do that. Stay warm buddy...

Message: Thanks, Sloey. I had the pleasure of hosting little brother Billy Sloey over to my house for dinner Friday evening here in Georgia. He was out in the region doing fact-finding for a new project and we managed to spend the evening dining and recounting many pleasurable recollections of our younger years in Hawthorne. He, his brother Jon and I, were on the same Pop Warner football team (Wasps) in 1963. That's when I first met the Sloey clan. All good guys then, just as now. Thanks, John Baker, for keeping our extended families connected.

Hey Tom, although not a Cougar sighting it's nice to hear that the Chaffee Ford name is still alive and well. Lots of great cars today at the Barrett-Jackson. Tomorrow should be the REALLY BIG BUCK day.

Message: Man very sorry to hear about Danny. He was one of the fastest guys our year. He was a really good football player. He was our "Fonzie". All the girls liked him, he was a bad boy who had a full color tattoo that covered his whole forearm. I used to lead him around the end and then he would run by me and everyone else for a touchdown. I saw him at or 20 year reunion and he looked great. He was very mild and toned down. We talked for awhile and he said how much he always liked me. He said he was sorry he had the tattoo on his arm. Does anyone know how he died?

Message: Geat pix of the Lion's team and Jim Brenton their head coach, they had a good team. That was the "clinic division", 8, 9, & 10 year old's. I was a defense coach for the Hawthorne Packers that year, with Joe Altieri as head coach and Bill Reams, the line coach. The Packers went undefeated that year if my old memory is correct. Played the games in the fields where the newer house's stand on the corner of 135th & Isis.
Hey Fred, Thanks for the feedback.....

Message: Not a Cougar sighting, but sorta. Those of you that remember Robert Duane "Bebop" Hegg(1967), will be pleased to know that our boy is alive and well, living in Minnesota. He did claim to having hip replacement? Sometimes as we mature, we become less hip, but I wasn't aware that hipness was a replaceable commodity. I'll have to look into it. Break out the Dizzy Gillespie records. Seriously, if you want more info on Beep, e-mail me. His address is; "in a van, down by the river."
Thanks Jim, for the report. I'm sure Bebop has many friends here.

Message: COUGAR SIGHTING..I was speaking with one of my colleagues at work this morning and asked him how far he commutes to work and he said about an hour. I asked where he drives in from and he said he lives near the 405 and 105 freeway interchange, lived in the area all his life. I asked him what high school he attended and yep, HHS class of 1989. Elias Lopez is his name. I have been working with him at Disneyland for going on nine months now and come to find out he's a Cougar! I wonder if Mickey and Minnie have any roots in Hawthorne? Small world, I guess...HAPPY NEW YEAR, everyone!
Hey Janny, GREAT sighting, ask Elias to sign in please.

Message: I received the following email today regarding Tim Thomas:
Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. We are working on this. I was wondering if you could help us obtain any photos of Tim in his football and Military uniform. It would be great to do something to celebrate him and the history of Hawthorne High School. James Eder
If any of you 65-67 folks have any pictures of Timmy and wish to share with the high school, that would be great. If anyone knows Cathy's whereabouts too that would or could help. #23 in the program #1 in our hearts!
Hey James, I just sent you his football picture from the 65 yearbook. Hope we can find his military uniform picture. Thanks very much Jim, for following up on this. Tim's a piece of HHS history and should be honored in the hallowed halls.

Message: Here is a link on an article written about Linda McVeigh being the first Crimson Editor. There are lots of articles online that she has written, but I cannot seem to find recent information on her. When we were freshman in 1962 we were all given a big sister to show us around. I got Linda McVeigh. I guess they thought they'd put the smartest student with the dumbest and maybe she would wear-off on me. No such luck. lol

Message: Hey John, just wanted to give a birthday shout out to former neighbor and classmate Shaunna Rogers (belated) and former partner-in-crime Ray Cramer '69(possibly belated?). I remember taking tap dance and ballet from Shaunna's mom, Mrs. Rogers when I was about 6. We lived at 118th St and La Cienega. Although, I was not that gifted she was always very nice and patient with us and our families looked forward to our recitals. Due to my subsequent 8 yr incarceraton in El Segundo (St. Anthony's), I didn't really see Shaunna too much until HHS....Have a good one, Y'all
Well Happy Birthday to Shaunna and Ray.....
