Message: Didn't Ms. Atkins live near Del Aire Park, or did she grow up there? Mrs. Stewart (Dana Girl's PE teacher) lived on 119th & Judah. I heard a rumor that Mr. Hammer (Wiseburn School District) is living in Del Aire. Mrs. Lafferty is in Holly Glen. Mrs. Slayback (sp?), Mrs. Bell and Mr. Upton are in El Segundo. They are all Wiseburn people. I seem to remember a rumor that some students followed a favorite teacher home to Orange County long ago. But it wasn't me, so I'll let someone else tell the story right!

Message: Very sorry to hear about Doug Sutherland. I remember his Chrysler powered deuce coupe and when I had my '57' blown Vette we raced over on Mariposa in El Segundo when it was just a straight street with no business or cross streets. Ya, I know we weren't supposed to do that so shame shame shame on me. ~ ~ ~ Mr Bennett the shop teacher used to live on York in Hawthorne. Lots of kids used to bring their lunch in a brown bag and on the last day of school when Bennett wasn't looking Joe Mazotta swapped his bag with Mr Bennett's. Just before the end of clsss Joe took a mallet and pounded his lunch bag till there was food all over the bench and no one laughed harder than the teacher. When class was over Joe walked over to Bennetts desk picked up his lunch and walked out after he got his report card of course. I talked to Denola Bryce at the last cruise and she's still in touch with Joe and says he hasn't changed a bit and is still crazy.

Message: I know of two teacher's who lived in Hawthorne. Mr. Capelouto, Coach/Teacher from the 50's/60's, I use to baby sit his two children, and in the 80's Mr. Smith, Girls Softball Coach/Teacher. Message: Hi John....if I remember correctly I missed Senior Picture Day because my mother had rheumatism arthritis all of her adult life and she had fallen and broken both hips and senior pics were that last thing on my mind as I had my two younger brothers to take care of since she was hospitalized in Downey where they specialized with patients who had advanced arthritis as she did.....I remember I was supposed to go for make up day to get them done but I don't remember that I ever did. That August we took her back home to Boston, Mass where they had a hospital by the name of Peter Brent Bingham where she was in rehabilitation for 2 months and then I came back to California at the end of November 1969 when I met my future husband( the late MArk Cordilla) before he joined the Marines and he went to Vietnam for one year. Sorry does not having a senior pic matter? Thanks......

Message: Hi John....I'm so embarrassed, you can certainly tell this is my first time doing this. It's a pleasure meeting you. I believe you mentioned you were the class of 62...but by any chance did you know a guy by the name of Jim Crawford, he graduated in 1960 so maybe you don't. He was a Hawthorne Police officer in the 70's and early 80's and I've been trying to get in contact with him and if anyone knows him I'd love to be able to say hello to him. This is an absolutely great way to see how all of your classmates from so long ago are. I can't believe the changes in Hawthorne Blvd, no more A&W drive thru, or Taco Tio or the islands where everyone would go to meet to see where any parties were and before you knew it the party was there in the islands on Hawthorne Blvd. At least Fosters Freeze is still there. The police were great, they never hassled us cruising or when we all gathered just to hang with our friends...sometimes they would even give us a heads up that Detective Rinkey, who was pretty by the book was in the area and to keep the music down...but it was always great, clean fun!!!! Those will always be the good ole days, I knew they were then but as I get older I realize how great those days and growing up in Hawthorne really were. We were really lucky to have those experiences, thanks for responding to me... Take care, Madeline
