Message: I had a hernia surgery when I was about 10 years old, caused by pulling Ron Mix in my wagon. I was about 5-7 years old and would pull my wagon down the street looking for treasures...Ron would hang out at the Moore's and would always catch me. He weighed in at about 150 and I about 38. This was before sidewalks and paved streets. Also the McDowells, Bonnie, Linda, and Ricky lived on the street. One more Dennis Campbell's sister in-law Mary Valdez was on the block...And Surotnicks.

Message: My mother kept telling me to learn to type - then I would always have something to fall back on. The only problem was I had a full schedule of things like Latin and science. Then in my Senior year I had an open slot so signed up for typing to placate my mother. After a few days I quickly realized I had no aptitude for typing and kept getting my fingers caught between the keys when I didn't look at my hands! Then someone in the HHS office noticed that I had never taken the "state requirements" (drivers ed, alcohol, and first aid as I remember) and could not graduate if I didn't. Bye-bye typing .... But then, in the early 80s they introduced computers in the labs where I worked in R&D and I had to learn to keyboard. Better late than never...

Message: Gail, also included on that one little block of 134th Street was Paul, Gary and Bob Moore all of whom were at HHS from '58 through '63. Mike and Barry Leslie lived on our other side, Classes of '63 and '65. Two doors west of the Duran family lived the most unforgetable Cougar of them all, Ty Goodman, class of '63. I can not remember the rest, but I can count at least 19 kids in that one block that went to HHS in the 60's.

I asked her where she was from, she said Hawthorne, I asked if she went to HHS, she said yes, Her name is Natasha Tyson class of 1989. I told her about CougarTown. She said she would check Cougartown out when she got home tonight. Thanks again J.B. for all your hard work keeping Cougartown going. You're the Man, Dan Dye

Message: Doris, you make a case for alot of us X-Jocks who thought typing was for wussies. Funny thing I remember a gal at Hawthorne who won all kinds of awards for being able to type over 100 words a minute on a manual typewriter. Name escapes me at the moment. Jan Stevenson comes to mind. But jeez there's a whole lot of guys out there that wish they'd taken typing in school at this time. For one thing you would have been the only guy with all the girls....kind of like Jim Peppers and the cheerleaders and or Home Ec. :-)) Hey Bake, C-Town is still much fun. Last week, win one, win one, go both Blues. How did our Cougs do? MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU, Jake N Jude.
Hey Jake, We lost to Leuzinger 48-0...

Message: Gail Oliver, was Jackie Butler the sister of Gary Butler, the HHS class of 1959? If so we lived next door to the Butlers. Mr. Butler helped my Granddad get a job at Harvey Metals when they came out to Cal from Iowa. Mrs. Butler held my Mom's hand when her two brothers were killed. Gary and I played football in the street against Ron Mix the most successful HHS footballer as both an All American and All Pro. Gary was a senior with my brother Bob, and we played on the 1959 B team when I was a freshman. Gary probably still has B exponites. They were a very good family.

Message: HEY! A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the YOUNG SLOEONE. And be careful there John about kidding that he is 67 or 68 ... THAT! My young friend is just a little too close to home! LOL! And keyboards? That's a subject right up my alley! You see ... I've been typing since I was 8 years old. Couldn't afford clothes or new shoes or even a bicycle, but at the ripe old age of 8, Pop got me a "portable typewriter" which came in it's own case. And I've been typing happily ever since. Did anyone ever type on the old electric IBM Executive typewriters? They put out beautiful work but most people hated them because it was difficult to correct anything. Most lower-case letters had two spaces in them, but some had one space like the "l" and "i". And then there was the "m" which had five spaces. Of course, the capital letters were off the chart with different spaces. I learned them by heart because speed and accuracy was valued in those days. Shoot! Now anybody can type and spell!

Message: Jackie Golla Butler was my Best friend's sister. We were all friend's from 134th Street, and have remained Best Friends. Upon hearing of her illness, I wanted to send her and the family a nice dinner from a local place in Long Beach. They chose, Marri's Pizza Parlour. When I called to have the order sent, they didn't take American Express or my debit card over the phone. I was so dissapointed..The manager then said, Go ahead and just send me a check! It restored my Faith in the Human race. Never has anyone sent food without the cash up front. It enabled the Golla family to have a nice dinner during this trying time. I sent a letter with my check for their Gracious deed. Jackie was a lovely lady, and wonderful mother of four children. She will be dearly missed.

Message: Fellow Cougars, it is my pleasure to invite you ALL to renew your dedication to supporting the current and future students of HHS by either RENEWING your Vons (eScrip) membership, or signing up as a new supporter in all of these programs: Vons (eScrip), Albertsons and Target. Vons (eScrip) has an annual renewal process which is simple to do; all those who are already signed up are asked to renew to continue your support. To my knowledge, Albertsons and Target do not require a renewal. ANYWAY ... PLEASE - even if you don't usually shop at any of these stores, you might someday, and it doesn't cost you ANYTHING to join the club and support HHS. Visit the "Hawthorne High Alumni Association" page that Cougartown has generously provided for simple instructions on signing up. Email me for help, or when you have signed up, so we can add you to our list of HHSers (Heroic Hawthorne Supporters!)
Thanks very much Sharon. I'm doing it as we speak.

Message: We haven't gotten to the point of calling keyboards "quaint" just yet (as Scotty referred to them in "Star Trek IV"). The HHS typing class definitely came in handy for me. I can sure tell the difference from people who can type from those who can't during IM sessions. While I can type off an answer in almost a blink of an eye, I have to sit and wait for the non-typists to hunt and peck their replies.

Message: I think about this often. Is there any class that was offered at HHS that you didn't take and "Kick yourself" for not taking that class? Mine is typing. I wish I would have taken typing in school. What is even more ironic is my father worked on typewriters and we always had one or two around the house.
If we only knew then that EVERYONE would have a keyboard today, huh Chris.
