Message: I remember going down to the old dominator wreck early 70s and seeing several old V8 engine blocks lying about, seems to me I checked on the wrecks cargo list and no mention of any engines, Did anyone else see them?? I always wondered why they were not salvaged before they became rust blocks. PS. this web site can be the FUNNIEST! I'm still rollin on the tree hugging, not to mention Keith Jones, You 2 have been goin at it from day one! Power to the Cougar! (Uncaged)
Well I know it wasn't hauling engine blocks PV used to be the easiest place to get rid of an old engine. You back up your pickup to the cliff and push it over. Mike Shay's 54 Ford engine and tranny is out there somewhere, huh Mike....

Message: Obviously the Dominator was a large vessel, but what were the circumstances of it's grounding JB? I don't remember any details or stories about it. How long did it stay there?
The Dominator ran a ground off of Rocky Point, PV on March 13, 1961. It was a converted WW2 Liberty Ship hauling, I think, some sort of grain. To my knowledge it's still there, although turned to rust, the remains are no longer visible.

Message: Hi John. I got a chuckle out of your calling my last message a polital statement and referring to it as "tree huggin." You know how fond I am of Eucalyptus. I just thought I'd make the comment, that it made me sad to see those circus animals in cages carted down the streets of Hawthorne. Thinking about it now, since we here hold our Cougar in such high esteem, maybe we should all think a bit more about the feelings of caged animals. Remember the 1960s movie "Born Free." The Hawthorne Cougar on the side of the HHS Gymnasium isn't a caged Cougar. It's a wild and free Cougar springing into action. That's what we admire about our Cougar. It's not some Cougar in a circus show, doing dumb tricks for a bite of food. A real Cougar needs to use its cunning, shrewd craftiness and courage to stalk its next meal. By using its power and agility, a Cougar pounces on its victim as the conquering victor. This is what we admire about Cougars, and probably a big reason why the Cougar was chosen to represent our High School and bring us good luck. The roar of the Cougar we can hear here on Cougartown, isn't some yelping confined Cougar. It's one of wild authority and of a free spirit, letting all know who crosses into its territory that visitors had better beware and that this is our home.
Nice try Lyle, but the Cougar was chosen for HHS because Wally Nyman, our first Principal, admired Washington State. Geez, is Sharon a tree hugger too??

Message: The "Cove" photo brings back many great memories. That is the first place I ever stood up on a surfboard.....Out with the Whaley and Davis boys and Gint. We enjoyed the area at a time before the current "localism". In the summer the smaller waves break real slow, like Waikiki. I think I know some of the "hidden spots" that Baxter Dodd was talking about. There was a great cave on the south side of either Lunada Bay or the next cove south, not sure. We used to climb on the old wreckage of the Dominator when the tides allowed. Keep the photos coming!
Thanks Carl...

Message: PV photo If it is the place I remember, you could hear those rocks clattering together caused by the in-coming waves. I also remember "hidden" cove-like places that were great for beach parties because you could only get to them during low tide and then be stuck there when the high tide came in. Fun when you were in there with a person or people you liked. Some coves had stairway access to the beach. - Baxter

Message: I think the picture of PV is really of the Cove area. This would be well south of Torrance beach and Rat beach. This site has been the center of many stories and newspaper accounts of locals versus others. Surfers are territorial, but this area is made up of trust fund babies and other PV types that feel they own the spot.I live in PVE and I do not go there unless with a local. A local is someone whose family has been in the area for at least 2-3 generations.26th street was better and way more fun.

Message: Hi Classes of 1970 to 1974, I am trying to locate a woman (Lana Puglisi) who graduated from Hawthorne High I believe in 1972. I only suggest that year because that is the year her husband (Peter Weiler- now ex I think) graduated and I think they were in the same class. I was a neighbor of hers at the time and I have some wonderful photos of her family and I would like to see that she gets them. If anyone out there can assist in locating Lana Puglisi I would truly appreciate it. Thank you. Pat
Anyone knowing Lana, please contact her first and ask her to verify Pat Downing. Thanks Pat, and Good Luck finding your friend.

JB or Clark, is there an HHS website where alumni could find out what's going on at our alma mater? Our local high school has one and is operated by the student tech lab.
Hi Mary Ann, Try this website. It's the school's website.

Message: Wonderful Hawthorne memories, Gary. My mom knew how to throw those innocent, special parties for my friends to enjoy. The record was just an excuse to get YOU there. The Adonis of Trinity Lutheran. Hawthorne was such a wonderful place for friendships. You could have a friend on every block in those days. When young, the homes looked so big, the streets so wide. I drive by now, and the homes are boxes, and the streets almost too narrow for 2 cars to pass. As for Ports 'O Call, I was there last year. Most all of the shops are empty. The crowds you see are for the restaurants and food stands. Especially the place that sells all the fish you pick out, and they cook. Tables full of people eating crab.
Great memories, Thanks Adrianne...

Message: Hey I know where Arianne lived. I was invited to parties there but only if I brought the only record I owned "Why Do Fools Fall In Love". The second thing I had to do was dance badly. Paco, I think we threw dirt clods at Adrianne and her sister. Adrianne, my Trinity Lutheran sister, you, Marsha and the rest of us had a great time at those parties. I remember we had to move the chairs and roll back the rug.

Message: I lived on W. 120th street, but it was before the circus animals were paraded down the street. Remember the song back in the early 1960s called the "Baby Elephant Walk." Wow, it must have really been something to see those polar bear and tigers rolling in cages through the neighborhood. At the same time, it's kind of sad for me to see photos of those animals in cages. The tigers should be back home in the forest with it's Tigertown buddies. The elephants should be back as masters of the savannah. Wild animals in captivity have been known to freak out and rebel. There could be a bipolar bear in the bunch. Each of them has a special place in their heart where they call home. We Cougars can tap into it, thanks to Cougartown.
Geez Kyle, Didn't expect anyone to throw a Political Tree Huggin' PETA ethical spin on this one Just a circus in Hawthorne and you know I never saw a Turn The Animals Loose poster at the Circus either. I wonder if they show up at Circuses today? Also, if you turned those Elephants loose on the Savannah, they'd have a heck of a long walk home....They're Indian Elephants

Message: Does anyone remember the circus that would set up at Hawthorne High JV baseball field, for a week, during the summer? It was the mid 60?s thru the early 70?s. I would wake up early and ask if I could help set up the tent. Most of the time they would let me and give me tickets for the shows for helping. All the animals would be across the street from my house. It felt like having my own personal zoo for a while.

Message: I remember my mom, sister and I many times going to a farm on a hill, up El Segundo, towards the ocean. I think we picked up produce there, but not sure. I know we made a left off El Segundo. I have a vivid recollection of my sister, for whatever reason, being barefooted and stepping on a bee. Could it have been the Bollinger farm? I lived on 129th and Inglewood Avenue. My dad would take me to a house just a few streets South of us, on the West side of Inglewood Avenue. He had several aviaries with finches and parakeets we would purchase from him. Does anyone remember that place? These posts are triggering all kinds of memories.
I remember lots of people had aviaries when I was growing up. Bob Reagan's dad had finches, and the main cage was made out of an old phone booth from the 50s.
