Message: You know it's like John mentioned, we're beating a dead drum. The world has changed, and our morals, ethnic ideas and not being able to wop your kids on the butt and deliver a little discipline have changed. I have no resolve. I wish I did. But I don't think a High School football team should win 150+ and then get back at it without some shinanigans going on. They're ranked # 1 in the top 25 of USA Today for the entire US of A as of last MID-week. Haven't looked this week to see the results. Our SR class went 26-8-1 in our four yrs. We lost 7 of those games in one year. One small school's CIF Title a 2nd and several Pioneer League championships for the school from the get go and after a 1-7 season, our JR Yr, they moved us up to the big guy level. You're talking about schools with 4000 to 4500 per school. We had an enrollment of about 1600 with 4 classes. They were 3 class schools!!! It just blows me away that there are that many good football players that live in that area....WITHOUT RECRUITING...We had guys that were as tough and smart as any I've ever seen. But somethins stinkin in Concord!! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU! Jake N Jude

Message: Slow TV night... I have been looking through Cougartown for the last hour or so. I got to looking at the menus for the Wich Stand, Hollys etc. Check out the
number of fries on the plate with the De Luxe Hamburger from the Wich Stand . That got me looking at the breakfast special. What they called their breakfast special is now the "Senior Special"! All they needed to do was multiply the price by 5 or 7 and you have todays "senior special". Over on the Holly's menu were phosphates. I really liked the cherry phosphate but I never knew how it was made. A little googling and I came up with: "Cherry Phosphate: Cherry flavored fountain syrup or snow-cone syrup (or substitute the syrup from jar of maraschino cherries)... Fill glass about 3/4 full with chilled club soda (no salt added). Shake in a few drops of phosphoric acid. Briskly stir-in flavoring with a spoon. Add ice." By the way John you have some links that are no longer used in the way they were intended and some email addresses that you have asked us not to use. OK coug's if you find any incorrect links or email John at john14@cougartown.com:)

Message: El Rojo- I actually am not a De La Salle booster, but your question made me fetch the sports page out of the recycle to see what happened last Friday. Unlike our own HHS Cougars, the Spartans of De La Salle won a first round North Coast Section 3A Playoff, 41-7 over College Park Pleasant Hill. The victory improved the nation's #1 ranked 3A team to 11-0. Look for a recruiting war to focus around their running back Tim Maupin who carried 15 times for 217 yards. I imagine USC will land him using some of their ethical recruiting methods such as that San Diego Bush parent home or something similar. Congrats Trojans on a great victory over Cal tonight. Now run the table over Notre Dame and UCLA so we can see you back in the BCS championship game against Ohio State!

We have countless fond memories of our extended family at Hawthorne Youth Camp. Bob (Thorn) was not only the Director of HYC, but more so a friend with a great sense of humor. He will be in our hearts forever.

Message: About the grades. I know of some athletes that did not play and were booted off the team because of grades. My SR year, basketball we lost out 7? center half way thru the season. It seems to be worst over all, in this area. I coach at L####### (so no one can get mad at me) High School. We lost over half at tryouts on grades. Then half way thru the season, 10 more. JV and Varsity 9 players per team. Keith, or anyone else, can you email those middle league picture?s from Ron Treat. Thanks!

Message: Sorry to hear about Bob (Thorn) Klein. I spent two summers as a counselor at Hawthorne Youth Camp and volunteered at the youth center where I met Mr. Klein. Those were fun days. The first year, I remember on Tuesday nights at camp, Thorn would act like he was very mad after the dance at the camp staff. He would tell the campers that we needed a meeting with all the staff and in the morning you might have a new counselor. If a counselor was not back for the meeting in 20mins, he or she would be sent home. So the campers would hurry back to the cabins and jump into bed quickly. The night before it would take an act of congress to get the kids to bed. Friday?s water carnival, Thorn was the judge of the bucket relay against boy and girls. But every time he turns his back, one of the counselors would cheat. The kids would start yelling cheater and Thorn would say ?I didn?t see anything?. He would make sure that each week the girls would win. The boys once a month. Patti Treckman sorry hear about your loss. She was a counselor with me my second year. My sincere condolences to Treckman and the Klein familys.

Message: Haven't been on Cougartown in a while so I was reading some past discussions that have taken place. Regarding the grades for athletes...I don't ever remember there being too many athletes that were "below the average" that had an issue with not being able to play. My son is currently a Senior at HHS and is starting his 3rd year as a member of the Varsity Baseball Team. I find it amazing that at the beginning of the season there are a number of players in the dugout. Once grades come out a couple of weeks into the season the dugout is minus at least 10 players every year! This year on the football team (mind you, not that it made or would have made a difference) approximately 10 to 15 kids received "no go" slips meaning their 5 week grades weren't good enough to play (2.0 gpa required to play sports.) Okay, we're talking 5 WEEKS into the school year! I just don't get it. I don't ever remember this being an issue when we were in school. There have been years when after grades have come out the JV and Varsity teams in some sports have been combined to make one team because of the loss of players due to grades!! My biggest fear was my mother pulling me off the drill team if I received a D or F in a class. Well, I had all A's except for Andrade's Bio Class (he gave me a D) and was petrified to tell my mom. But after explaining to her how he graded she let me stay on drill team. Thank goodness he retired when my daughter was a Freshman! Okay...I'll stop rambling now.....Treckman family, our thoughts and prayers are with you.

"Many of you have already been notified one way or another, so please forgive me for this initial short email to let you know that my beloved husband Joe has gone home to the Lord. He passed away yesterday, Tuesday, November 14 at Scripps Hospital in La Jolla, California as a result of a massive stroke. He was a blessing to so many, and you will be glad to know that he did not suffer and now is in a place where no walkers or canes are needed and he can walk with a spritely gait at the side of his father and mother and his brother Pat.
A Celebration of Joe's life is scheduled for Friday, December 1 at 3 pm at Grace Presbyterian Church, 31143 Nicolas Rd., Temecula, CA, phone 951/695-1913."

Message: I finally got a chance to watch the reunion video from John Achrem. Boy does that bring back memories. John you did a great job we all appreciate all the work you did. I would also like to thank the entire reunion committee on all of your hard work to put on a fabulous reunion that I missed. Like Clark Millman said on the reunion video we all had 10 years to arrange time off to attend; there's really no excuse. I really missed a great time. I was also saddened to hear of the Cougars that have passed away. Phil Fulton was a real good friend of mine. We grew up together since 1st grade. If anyone knows of a way to get ahold of his family I would appreciate it. Thanks again to the reunion committee for all your work.
