Hi Dennis, Very interesting, indeed. I'll add it to this page.

Message: Bob Klein was my Father-in-Law for 12 years and to be honest, he was more like my father in many ways. Bob (Thorn) hired me as a camp counselor and he was my mentor. That experience and his advise had such a significant and positive change in my life and I think about it often. Where would I be without Bob?. I married his daughter (Teri), we have 2 beautiful kid's, and I have memories of 2 years of camp that I will never forget. Bob came up to visit my wife and I several months ago and I knew that his time on this earth was short. Bob was still as funny as ever and he had that same wit. Bob and my mom (Anne Armstrong) and a host of other Hawthorne Citizen's helped build Hawthorne Youth Camp and I had the privilege of spending 20 yrs of my summer's there. Thanks Bob, for the memories and for giving so freely of yourself to others. Teri, Rick, and Faelin, you had a father that gave everything he had to others, so much so, that he sometimes had little precious time to spend with his family. He made a difference, it does not get any better than that.

p.s. Hello to Mr. Dean Morris, Susan King and the class of '88!
Hi Sandra, Glad you liked the History of Hawthorne. Lots of Cougars will see something they recognize.

Message: Bob Klein was a dear friend of the Walton family and I've so many fond memories of him ... including the weekends and vacations families camped out and worked so hard in the beginning stages of building the Youth Camp. Before his career with the City of Hawthorne and their Parks and Recreation Department, Bob was the Editor of the former Hawthorne Press. He truly had a compassionate journalist style and helped shape and report so much regarding the city during both its growth and "interesting" politics. Bob was also an outstanding sports writer and gave the Cougars and youth sports great coverage. My condolences to the Klein family. God Bless.

Message: John, with all the recent feedback about great athletes and coaches at the grade schools that fed HHS, I want to remind everyone about a lesson I learned at Dana. The noon intermurals were usually fun except when by chance you were placed on the "loser" team. I was on such a team in 54 or 55. Mr Clark ran the noon program and he realized as did we that we were in for a rough season. Mr Clark always talked with us before each game and gave us encouragement whenever he could. We didn't win a single game and usually played short-handed because a few team members did the easy thing and quit. At the end of the season Mr Clark held an awards gathering where he handed out the usual little colored paper certificates of participation. At the end of the ceremony there was a stack of really fancy certificates still remaining. Everyone assumed that those were for the "winners". Instead, Mr Clark called our team up to the front and gave us the really nice certificates. Most of what he said as he handed out those certificates has been lost in the fog of my long term memory but it had a lot to do with building character and understanding the importance of perserverance. These were lessons learned that stayed with me for a lifetime.
Hi Mike, I'm sure the present day Cougar football team could use a certificate. They show up every week and play their hearts out. Lots of us have played on that same team, in life. Thanks for the story.

Message: To the Klein Family - Our thoughts are with you. I remember as a camper being so intimidated by "Thorn" and much later learned how much of a facade that persona was. Bob was such a thoughtful man and left an impression on so many young minds. A few years after Deb (Frybarger) and I were married Bob referred us to an apartment in Hawthorne off of 139th St. Bob's girl friend (Jennie, later to become Bob's wife) was the landlady - so there was a time when we got to see him quite a bit. He was always friendly, considerate and good natured. Bob considered Deb "his girl Friday", thus her camp name. Bob was truly an icon during the glory days of Hawthorne Youth Camp and we feel very privileged to have been associated with him and to call him a friend.

Message: The kids that grew up during those wonder years of Hawthorne youth camp have lost a Mentor, Leader, Boss, Good Friend. "Thorn" as we called him, Could always be found on Monday mornings up at the flag pole spelling out the rules and regulations of camp life to the campers. Dressed in his bermuda shorts, camp tee shirt, a whistle around his neck, sandals and sunglasses. His voice is still fresh in my mind. I spent 5 summers working for Thorn and have cherished the memories. He was Hawthorne Youth Camp in all it stood for. To the Klein Family my heartfelt condolences to all of you. God Bless. Message: The passing of Bob "Thorne" Klein is truly a loss for all the Hawthorne kids of the 70's. In the summer of 1973, as a very young and immature boy, Thorne offered me an opportunity to be part of something very special, the staff at Hawthorne Youth Camp. It was my first and most memorable job. This one opportunity opened many doors and enriched my young life. Through this experience I also enjoyed the friendship of Bob?s two beautiful and warm hearted daughters. Teri and Faelin, thanks for sharing your father with us Hawthorne kids. We are better Cougars because of your father. Our prayers are with your entire family.

Message: Dean you make some good points. But having faith and learning to a good person, IE: good young MAN, spiritual etc. Hal Chauncey taught me just about all I needed to be a winner. As well as the rest of the HHS coaches. And include in that a couple of teachers, Mrs. Ginger Mark and Manny Pizzaro. As far as us rich guys from Holleyglen, I lived on 118th place, just east of what they called Anza back in those days. Rich? Hell I wore my bro's hand me downs for about 15 years until I got bigger than him. So don't give me the jive that spiritual and godliness win 150 plus games. Maybe UCLA pushed the envelope during their runs. De La Salle learned how to perfect sending it. Last case in point , they went 1-2 in their first 3 games last year? Still won their division in CIF! Weird. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude.
Well NOW we gotta TOPIC....

Anytime, you want to bring "those guys to the table ", "no problem"!!! If it wasn't for the people I mentioned before, those guys would have been toast and they know it. And yeah Keith we would have taken you guys on when we were in our 30's! Football, BB, Baseball. I wish I could still have that kind of fun. So I guess it's a moot point. We're all still COUG's. MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. Jake N Jude!
You left out Joe Contestabile, and Russ, the OLDER you get, the BETTER you were.

Message: The De La Salle win streak may be rivaled by the York Parks and Rec. teams of the 50's. As I remember it, York never lost a game in any sport under the tenure of Coach Dan Karilla (who went on to coach baseball at Lennox and became an administrator at HHS). Those teams were feeders for the Intermediate School who regularly crushed Yukon and Dana in the annual track meet (as I recall).
Topic 2: Curtis Conway used Ed Lutz's address to become a Cougar, and, (as I recall) Mike Battle's parents offered up their son to play football for the Coug's in 60 something (they would of moved into the district) and Coach Chauncey said politely, "no thanks." No favors for jocks at HHS in the 60's (as I recall).
That sounds like the Ol' Coach allright. ALWAYS kept things above board. Thanks James

Message: Sharon: Actually, some shenanigans took place if you refused to play sports. In my soph year, the Boys B basketball coach also taught the World History class I took. Being slightly tall, he told me I WOULD go out for the team, which I didn't (band geek). He flunked me. My course work was all A, and my class project was an A, and my final exam was 'missing'. The district still made me repeat it in summer school (yep; got an A). The coach/ World History teacher was mysteriously missing my junior year. [what a shame I did not know of the 'Legal Lottery' back then]
