Message: I remember at West High the athletes got free meals. Mr. Clark gave me an "F" in Algebra. That meant I couldn't play baseball. He got allot of crap from some people for doing that. He called me into his room the day of a game against West. He told me he was against what he had to do but he ended up giving me a "D" so I could play. I got a ride to the game and showed up around the 2nd or 3rd inning. I changed into my uniform behind the dugout. Went in to pinch hit and they walked me. I got a home run the next time up I think. they didn;t have a fence so I had to run the whole way. I think that was the game where everyone was waiting for me and Glen Peterson to have a collision at home plate. He was there big star. This is how my memory remembers it.

Message: Sharon..I don't think anyone in our era was involved in shenanigans regarding phony grades in order to compete in sports. Quite the contrary, I always felt the teachers at Hawthorne did not particularly appreciate athletes getting out of classes early in order to make the team bus for a competition. Whereas in the 1980s there were definitely shenanigans going on with some athletes that Coach Courtney took care of. He brought some athletes into HHS who lived out of the area. The reality is that it was not harming the students and HHS was winning the state track meet year after year and also setting a national record in 1985 in the mile relay which still stands today. Some schools definitely take care of their athletes. I was a tutor for athletes at USC for business courses when I was there. No grade fixing just extra study time!

Message: Don D. Good for you, Hope you learn to enjoy the surf. Dont know what surfing experiences you are looking for but a few words of advice from a long time surfer. 1. learn to hop up. 2. learn to fall away from your board. 3. at first learn to surf in the most uncrowded places. 4. Learn not to drop-in on other surfers (which is almost impossible today). Surf Report: This weekend was packed with stellar glassy overhead sets. Today slightly smaller but still head-high and glassy with off shore winds. Outlook for Wed. & Thur double to triple overhead sets out of the NW expected for So-Cal., Wash & Oregon may see 30' sets. Looks like maybe another fun month of surf.

Message: Here's a question for the jocks among us: Did you receive, or know of anyone who received, special academic dispensation in order to further the sports cause for HHS? I am wondering if our alma mater participated in the shenanigans that I suspect occurs in high schools and colleges all over the USA. Is it only football and basketball jocks that get the wink/nod GPA required to play? Or do other sports athletes get special handling as well? I had no knowledge of this occuring at HHS when I was there, which makes me wonder, did it?

Message: John, I read a few posts concerning Jim Thompson's service station. I worked for Mr. Thompson on weekends during my high school years. One Sunday night Steve DeCuir(HHS67) and I were closing the station down when a car parked across the street from the station. We heard screams coming from the car and noticed a woman in the back seat and a guy in the front seat beating the daylights out of her. Steve called the police but they were slow in arriving so we went over to assist the lady. We opened the back door and tried to get the guy off the lady he attacked us and so did the LADY! At that point the cops arrived and she wanted to press charges against US? The officers told them to hit the road and commenced to chew us out for interfering in a family fight! We told Mr.Thompson about the incident and got another a...chewing. So much for being heroes. Take care John and say hello to Mike Shay and Bob Frazer for me, Dennis
Hey Dennis, Thanks for the great story and you just said hi to Mike and Bob as they are both regulars here. Come on back anytime.

Many of the boys look familiar, but the only one (other than my bro) I think I know the name of, is top row 2nd from left, isn't he Wayne K.? I do remember I thought he was cute! I'll be calling Barry (bottom row 2nd from left) and have him look at it.

Message: Well not quite a Cougar sighting but a close encounter. A few weeks ago I was asked about the surf song I used as background on one of my videos. The answer being Boogie Board by the Surfonics, a modern Oregon group that I found on the Internet. I received a very nice email from the guitarist of the group and writer of the tune, Mike Graves. He grew up with us in the 60?s and 70?s being born in nearby Inglewood. He attended the local schools including Highland, Anza, and Beulah Payne elementary schools, George W. Crozier junior high, and he went to Morningside High his freshman year. Both his parents attended Inglewood High too. In 1972 they all packed up and moved to Joseph, Oregon, population 870 and his graduating class consisted of 20 guys and three girls. What a change. He wrote the song I used in 1995 and he would like to correct Walter that is not the same song as the Plungers version, only the same name. He also would like to extend an invitation to all our Northern Cougars to join him in enjoying some great surf music. His group will be appearing next at the Eugene, Oregon Saturday Market on November 11th at 3:30 P.M.
Now that is pretty freaky. It is really strange how the word gets around on the Net, but it does. Good luck to Mike and the rest of the Surfonics, and hope some of our Surfin' Oregon Cougs will show up on Novenmber 11th. Thanks for the story, Jerry
