Message: Yo John - Or anyone that may know the answer. Seems like I remember in the front of one of our year books, like '59 or '60, there was a tribute for three Cougars that died during the previous summer. Does anyone know what happened? Or, does anyone know the year of the tribute or have a copy of the El Molino with the info?ThanksAlan
Hey Alan, The tribute was in the 59 El Molino. The Book was dedicated to Gordon Michael Baker, Thomas Woodrow Hanes, and Michael Lee Jones. I don't know the demise of the latter two, but Gordon Baker committed suicide. His Epitaph was printed in the front of that El Molino. This is from my worn out copy.
Gordon Baker and his family lived right across the street from my father at that time and as the word got out about Gordon's death, lots of my dad's friends were calling him with condolences, thinking it was me who had passed.

Message: Lucy (far right) and her Parents at the Laundry Storefront I am the Chinese Laundry father's daughter of Hawthorne, California. My parents immigrated to Los Angeles after the Japanese invasion during WWII and had to manufacture their own employment due to racial discriminations. My family and I lived in the back of the laundry store called Victory which was located on 12530 Hawthorne Blvd. and I can remember I would go get supper at Taco Tio. My sisters, brother and I had to work after school and our mom attended ESL night school at Lawndale Adult Education. As typical with many of the earlier Chinese immigrant, my family and I had undergone much hardships in keeping up with the business. If business was bad, they would ask to help to do the laundry of the other cleaners such as the Culver City and Redondo Beach cleaners. My family lacked money, clothes, medical and dental care and education and lost the house on 12216 Birch Ave in 1975. My parents operated this Laundry from 1964 to 1975. As I grew up, I was determined not to follow with our family's business in search for a better career. Also, I feel how lucky I am to have my home, car, education, clothes, healthcare and retirement.
Hi Lucy, Thanks for the story of your family. I can't imagine how tough it would be for a family who didn't speak the language to get started in a foreign land. Thanks again....

Message: John, this is an answer to my query on your bus question. Does it sound right to you?"Yes, there was one scene with a museum Pre-Fishbowl GM bus from LA(?) in 'fruit salad' NCL (National City Lines) colors ('flyspeck' details only a transit enthusiast would likely know)...unfortunately, although with Bob Hoskins in the picture, they didn't create a RED Pacific Electric trolley effect like in Roger Rabbit. LA (Los Angeles, not Lake Arrowhead, Louisiana nor Paterson, NJ) in 1959 still had trolleys (city-operating local lines, with PCC trolleys painted in NCL two-tone green and cream) and the Red PE operations)...running until 1963...right next to the Daily Planet (I mean LA City Hall) building."
I saw it from 120th. It was a bus.

Message: Flipping channels a couple of nights ago and stopped at one of those celebrity ?true or false? shows. They were discussing Glen Campbell being a Beach Boy for a short period, and how he filled in for B. Wilson for part of a tour. I had forgotten about that and still find it hard to envision. Wait a minute, Glen Campbell is from Arkansas? Hmmm .. Leeroy??? Nah. - Baxter
LeeRoy for Junior Sample, maybe.....

Message: Chips Restaurant...When I was in my early teens my dad would drop me off at 10 O'clock mass at Saint Joseph's. During that particular mass it was always standing room only and I would always stand just inside the vestibule until the coast was clear and then book over to Chips for my Sunday morning breakfast. After a few weeks as I was getting ready to order, someone put their hand on my shoulder, I turned around and immediately turned pale...it was my dad. Needless to say, I experienced the wrath of coach Chadwick and became religeous again. The next Sunday as I was going inside the Church I saw an usher by the door giving me a look of "I bet you won't try that again". I gave him a look back "rat fink".

Message: I saw "Hollywoodland" tonight and our ol' hometown had a scene. Chips Restaurant and St. Joseph's Church (in the background) made an appearance.
Did the scene have an old Bus in it? If it did, I saw the scene being filmed about a year ago.

Message: Here's a couple of things to address which have been mentioned here today. To answer Al, I know one band that played at the Drop-ins, mine! This has been mentioned on these pages before, but we were called, "The Civilized Movement," and we played there five times. All the members were HHS people. And for Bud, there is also a car show in Westchester on Saturday at the Elks Lodge on Manchester Avenue. (I'll be there with my car). And on the 24th of Sept, the entire Redondo Beach pier will be covered with hot rods and classics. So go to the picnic, stick around and go to the pier....a whole weekend of good times and nostalgia!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks John....

Our home is usually the " pit stop" for friends and family who attend so stop by and say hi, just look for the Green Bay Packer flag flying proudly on Covina between 2nd and the sand.
Hey Bud, I've been to the Belmont Shores show a few times. Great show....Thanks....Where's Keith?

Message: Nope Jerry, You got me on them..I must have seen them at the Dana dances but I don't remember. I think I am finally done searching for & recording old top 40 tunes from the 50's, 60's & 70's. 5,846 songs from that era is enough for my listening pleasure & what I can bring to the Cougartown events. That collection culminated from seeing what I could find from the songs John had listed here on Cougartown and then from other top 40 sites. I don't have all of the songs, there were quite a few I either couldn't find or didn't want in the collection.
Hey Walter, I just saw last night where Time Warner has 150 songs from the 50s and 60s for 5 EASY payments of just $29.95 - You got the better deal.

Message: Carolyn, there is no need to be embarrassed even a little. I don?t think anyone on Cougartown, not even Walter Holt, could come up with the name of that one even if it does sound familiar. I wanted a snappy surf type song for the background and found that one surfing the web. It is an original piece called Boogie Board by a modern Oregon group called the Surfonics. I think they are very good. The artist describes this particular song as, ?Just a little finger-lickin', chicken-pickin', tail-shakin' ditty!? I?m glad you are enjoying my little shows. If you hurry and pack your bag and get to the 62 at 62 reunion next week, you might see some more. What?s a couple of thousand miles for a chance to see old friends?
That's right, Carolyn, as Jerry has put together a couple more for us. I've mentioned this before, but Jerry is Roy Ryse's bro and has done a very powerful "In Memoriam" video that will be shown at the reunion. Thanks much Jer', and be there, 62ers....

Message: Hey Deano, It's Bill Cusac here, just wanted to let you know that I pulled through and the docs are dumb founded. Last Friday afternoon I went into a deep sleep knowing that it would probably be my last. Saturday morning I woke up and asked my wife to get me up out of this hospital bed needed to go to the bathroom. She looked at me with concern, because my legs had died from my knees down. Well to make a long story short here I am living without any heart medication since 8/28 and refusing any other meds at all. To God be the Glory. Thank you for your love and memories, my wife showed me and read to me the email's that my friends have sent to her. Let everyone know that God is not taking me home as of yet. Take care , Billy C
Hey Billy C, GREAT NEWS!! Thanks for letting all know, and thank God for you and the power of prayer. Please stay in touch with all of us.

Message: Hi, I just had to mention that I recently received my "new & improved" (corrected ) copy of FLYING EMBERS by our fellow Cougar Jim Pasternak. OH MY GOSH,, I cannot put this book down!!! And I feel guilty as I e-mailed Jim & told him I was going to save it to read during my surgery recovery time,, Well Jim,, there are 2 reasons,, the surgery is being postponed as I have to see a specialist 1st and I took a peek at the 1st few pages & I was hooked!!! So,, Jim will have to knock out hopefully the next sequel (?) Ok , each & every one of you reading Cougartown, if you haven't gotten a copy of this book,, please do,, and tell those who aren't regular readers of Cougartown (shame on them!) and current or former residents of Hawthorne CA buy a copy of this book,, its great reading and a wonderful way to show your support! And also those who enjoy reading books about Romance, Firefighters and/or flight attendants,, you will ENJOY!
How about John Baker the Coca Cola President? I haven't gotten my new improved revised edition yet, Jim.
