Message: A while back Keith Jones pondered the question of who all worked for Standard / Chevron.
Like Cal Kappen I worked at the Standard Station (#640) at Main and Grand in El Segundo in '64 and '65. I also worked at Century and La Cienega (#7240), the Airport and Imperial and Sepulveda (#3898) stations. Another Cougar working for Standard Stations, Inc. during that time was Jim Lambert.
I have fond memories of pumping gas, checking tires, washing the windshield and using exactly two paper towels to dry it before checking the oil. Standard wouldn't hire anyone who had experience in a gas station. They wanted to train their people "the Standard Staions, Inc. way to do it".
Sonny Tanger (Tanger and Weitzel Shell at 301 E. El Segundo Bl.) had another rule; "Do it his way or get fired"........ I got fired....

Message: First time user...I promised my younger, Steve, I would log on and check it out a couple of years ago. He passed away in January 2005. The weirdest thing happened. Colleen Adams posted a message about two weeks ago that she bought a yearbook from ebay. Turns out it was my brother, Steve's yearbook from his freshman year. Serious goose bumps. She heard about Steve passing away, her message said to contact her for details. Well looks like she is going to give us the yearbook. Steve was a diehard Cougar. It's strange how things work out.
I also wanted to mention a bunch of us girls (mostly Steve's friends from class of 82) went to the Lighthouse in Hermosa for Martinis and Manicures last year and Ernie Curcio's band was playing. I saw Dan's message about seeing him in Tarzana. Well Dan, my 16 year old son played in Overkill (from the 80's) with my youngest brother Jeff for the past year. Too cool. We will never be too old.
Too old....Liz, I'm 18 years older than you and I'm not too old. Thanks for checking in and for the story.

Message: Jim, Haven't checked Cougartown in a while and was happy to see the first posting I saw was from you about your Varsity sweater. I am the one that purchased it on eBay! I was wondering if I ever would get any "provenance" on this "vintage" sweater. I know that there were a couple of other alumni that had tried to help me get in contact with you but if there were any other posts about it, I missed them.
It doesn't fit, not sure what I will end up using it for but, who knows maybe some day I will lose enough weight to wear it and come out there to a class reunion in it! If not, it might just go back on eBay!
Chris

Message: Dear John...never thought I would start a note this way... Sorry about the mix-up. You are correct, Noreen was refering to her brother, John...I think the last time I saw Noreen, she was about nine. Wonder why my old and dear friend, her sister Georgette doesn't chime in on occassion? When we were much younger, Georgette was ill alot. I hope she is currently healthy and in good spirits.
Happy Dad's Day to all...

Message: Well just shows to go ya ... you learn the darndest stuff on CougarTown USA! Just found out my "little brother" did some climbing on the old Hawthorne water tower. I, having been such a "do-gooder", never even THOUGHT about climbing the silly thing! LOOK WHAT I MISSED!!!?? And I was always climbing trees fer crying out loud! Hey Keith! We now have something in common besides going to good old HHS -- I was bitten by one of your dumb spiders. The doc wasn't sure whether it was a brown recluse or a hobo, but it sure got ugly fast! Doc also said the guy didn't get a good bite of me or I would have been in a lot worse shape. Took some Prednisone and it's much better; not gone, not forgotten, but better! Now Keith ... I simply REFUSE to walk on the bottom of the ocean with weights tied to my limbs!!! LOL! HEY! HAPPY FATHERS' DAY DADS!
Hey Doris, welcome back....

Thanks Andrea and Happy Fathers Day to all our Cougartown Dads.

Message: Must comment on Kirk Greasby's tale of the water tower. What he didn't mention was that after the first 30 feet above the workroom, it was a totally vertical ladder to the top in a tube not much more than 6 feet in diamater. But when you opened the top hatch, the view WAS incredible. I was only 12 on my first climb up and I'll bet my finger prints are still etched in the railing. The camera was installed in the early 70's as a "security" measure and was monitored in an office in city hall. It was soon known as the "Spy in the Sky" by many workers and citizens and was taken down a few years later.

Message: I think the steering knobs were more often called "brodie knobs". I think a "brodie" was basically making the car spin or over correct from one side to the other?
A car buddy recently made the observation that things resurface when the former teenagers get past the parent phase of their lives and can do the things they wanted to do 40 years earlier. So, a lot of the things that were "cool" in the 60's may be resurfacing as our generation has the time and $s to indulge themselves. An example is the crazy prices for 60's supercars with the hemis leading the way. I think a hemi Cuda sold for 2 or 3 million recently.
I can remember a couple guys who all through intermediate school asking me if I was a surfer or a hodad. I always told them that I was a hot rodder, which was a little bit of a stretch for a 7th grader. Kind of turns out, I always was a hot rodder, and that's where my time and $s will be going, basically to do what I would have done 40 years ago if I could have. I hate to imagine what the low-riders are planning and I have no idea what the hodads ever did. I suspect the real surfers are still surfing and don't realize the 60s ended.
Is there a spell checker hiding here somewhere?
Hey Ken, I'm sure you can do much better than a 2-3 million dollar Hemi. Lots of them out there, restored, for 80 to 100 grand. Good Luck with the 40 year dream....

Message: So there I was in my Cougartown T-shirt at the DICK DALE concert at Mt SAC (Mount San Antonio College, for you non-tracksters), and no Cougar sightings. I thought for sure that I would see some surf guitar fans. What a show. But, alas, there were no Deltones. I guess he outlived both of them. Did you know he also sings pretty well and plays the drums and trumpet? He has another show coming up on August 19 in Wrightwood. www.ticketweb.com
Hey Ron, Dick Dale has been around for at least 45 years. He must be doing something right. Thanks for the heads up.

Message: Hi John.... Tuned in to your personal style of the golden oldies, that is, all of us. Read Myrna's note...I remember Myrna from all the way back to my 1st grade year (she was in 2nd grade). Anyway...today is MY birthday and I guess from a few of the recent entries, yours is sometime around this date as well. May I wish you a very pleasant Birthday and may Father's Day be just as joyous. I sincerely appreciate your little 800+ page (with photos and music) term paper project. I really enjoyed Chuck Armstrong's note. Chuck was and probably still is a pretty good guitarist. He, Tim Awayan, Art Verduzco, Paul Anderson, et al, made a pretty hot sound in the Fall of 1962.
Well happy Bday John and enjoy all the memories...
Hey Mike, Thanks for the birthday wishes. They are appreciated, although my Bday is still a couple of months down the road. I think Noreen was alluding to her brother, John Crotty.

Message: There is a classmates.com ad on the Internet, it is 3 yearbook pictures- the middle kid is my son Mikey! When we went to the shoot, they dressed him in a gold colored shirt, with a red and gold sweater vest- I swear! He walked out all dressed up and I yelled, He's a Cougar!!! They all thought I was nuts... anyway, he doesn't really wear those glasses, and he's extremely handsome and charming which doesn't come thru in the photo, but I just thought you should all know that in the color world he is wearing Scarlet and Gold!
Now to important stuff: I am seeing 76 and 75'ers reference our 76 30th reunion this year - YES we have a reunion and YES it's going to be GREAT and YES you can get tickets NOW but hurry cause they are starting to go and we have limited seating. All years of Cougars are welcome, we are an equal opportunity grad year organization!
Hey Sharon, I'll be looking for Mikey out there. Thanks for the information....
