Message: Thanks to Kirk Greasby for the recollections of working for the Hawthorne Water Department. But the thought of walking around on top of that ball carrying an obstruction clearance light sent a tingle from my toes right up to my knees.
Me too, I was thinking about the afternoon sea breeze blowing about 30 mph up there too. Guess that's why all the City Employees make the BIG Bucks.

Message: "The surviving founders of the Beach Boys have made their first public appearance together in ten years. Brian Wilson, Mike Love and Al Jardine stood atop the historic Capitol Records building in Hollywood. They were there to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the landmark "Pet Sounds" album and the double-platinum certification of 2003's "Sounds of Summer: The Very Best of the Beach Boys."
The trio was joined by veteran band member Bruce Johnston and former Beach Boy David Marks. Band members were presented with framed plaques each containing two platinum vinyl records. Plaques were also issued posthumously to Wilson's brothers, Carl and Dennis, both original Beach Boys members. The reunion of the Beach Boys came after decades of animosity between Love and Wilson, who are cousins."
Thanks for the info, Chuck....

Message: Hey Carl...If you happen to run into him in the reasonably near future, mention my name and ask him "What ever happened to that delapodated, old beatle you used to drive up and down I-5 all those years?" The reason they were called beavers is because of that funny looking round shape, they looked from the side like a brown beaver...just no tail...especially the brown ones. Richard, I did like the history of the band, uniforms, etal. Good job!! John, around the second week of August is there any possibility of a Foster's or Pinks run? Chris and I will be down about then, after visiting Myrna & Jim, Hot August Nights. I know it is a ways away but thought I'd ask anyway...too many ways...well you know what I mean... Good to see and hear from everyone...
Hey Mike, Cruise Night is set for the 20th of August, a Sunday. Also, our Cougartown Picnic will be at Recreation Park in El Segundo this year, and will be probably the 3rd weekend in September. Hope you can make at least one of these events.

Message: The Hawthorne Water Department, And Elevated Storage tank. 14 of the best years I ever spent, was working for the City Of Hawthorne Water Department. I learned so much from Wendy Fraser, Kathy, Steve, and Debbies Dad. The man would walk up behind you, pat you on the back to see if you were sweating and always have a decent word or two for you. there were other H.H.S. Grads that worked there, Kurt Pettlon, mike petrusko, mark arseneau, guys that made those 3a.m. broken watermain leaks A BLAST.
As for the water tank, It was the coolest place to be. Temp wise. at the base of the tank there was a meter shop and all the meters that were changed out were repaired right there. Inside of that room there was a ladder going up inside of the ball / tank. Every once in a while LAX or Hawthorne Airport would call the Plant asking us to fix the red lights on top. we'd climb to the top with a very expensive light bulb and climb out on top and replace the burned out one. you could see forever up there. 125 feet high. I think I still have an old picture of the two water tanks standing side by side, If I find it I'll send a copy to John.
Well thats about all from the Rocky Mountain Cougar, Hello to Wade, Stacy, and Loulou. Still planning on seeing all of you in August for the 76er reunion.
Kirk
Interesting stuff there. Thanks Kirk....

Message: I also lived on Ramona in the early 60's. We lived in the house next to the apts that Dan is talking about. I use to run up & down the stairs. John do you or does anyone remember when the "YMCA" was built because it sure seems like we lived on that street before it was there. And did anyone ever get to go inside the water tower? I never did but one of my sisters did. Had fun living on that street. Then we moved to Truro between 120th & 118th.More fun times.
Hi Joyce, No, I don't remember when it was built, but I'll bet someone on Ramona remembers. Thanks....

Message: Addendum to rules -- any all hit in the air past the pitcher and not caught was an out ;-) JB, with your Mom having lived on 111th and now with this disclosure that you lived on Ramona, it's getting stranger the connections between you and me. I lived in the apartment building just to the north of the Church on the corner of El Segundo and Ramona (the one with the funny sayings on their marquee). 12712 Ramona (I think Apt # D). (We moved ALOT -- I also lived on Gale near Imperial, Eucalyptus near El Segundo and 4672 w 118th). However, we never lived in Holly Glen or Del Aire (though my sister lives in Del Aire now).
Sorry Dan, the only connection there was Grandma Baker's Church.

Message: I know you were thrilled the last time I mentioned this JB but today I saw the CD released by Hawthorne rock band Dios Malos and they have the Hawthorne water tower on their CD artwork! They also have it on their website. Now, seeing the Water Tower reminded me of the two man "baseball" game that I used to play down the street at the Hawthorne Y which was next door to one of the city's water tanks -- pretty near the tower. If you pulled through the Y's parking lot (which had part of the building over it), there was a blacktop in the back. To the south was a 30 foot wall behind which was the water tank. To the north was a 7 foot brick wall against the railroad tracks. In the northwest corner was a "short porch" which kept the trash bin and a stair case that led upstairs to the gymnastics gym. So Bill Wadman, Robert Bates, Omar Azze and I use to play two man "over the line" using a tennis ball and live pitching. The rules were any grounder was an out and any ball in the air that got past the pitcher was a single, and any ball over the wall, including the short porch or up the staircase was an HR. We must have played a 1000 games back there -- sometimes fouling the ball over the wall into the water tank area -- upon which we trespassed if we ran out of tennis balls. And we must have had a 1000 arguments back there. Funny thing is that Y was sparsely attended and we had the facility basically to ourselves.
Great stuff Dan, and the REALLY strange thing is the previous house where the "Y" sits is where I was brought home from the hospital. My very first home in Hawthorne.

Message: It appears that someone fraudulently signed my name to that "purple" inscription in Mr. Vaquer's yearbook, full of double entendres. That person should be ashamed of themselves. Someone borrowed my 1972 yearbook, so I can't find what he wrote, but I found a two printable quotes in my 1971 El Molino: "As a Junior English student you rate "A" Sophomore" - Miss Clark. "Johann, well what else is knew" - Mr. Pizzaro (written next to a photo of Mrs. Strahan, on which Mr. Pizarro had drawn a moustache). As an aside, under the Foster's Freeze ad in the back of the 1971 El Molino is a bogus "ad" apparently overlooked by the faculty supervising the yearbook staff. It reads: "Acme Lemon squeezers, Give your taste buds a treat, cause it always comes fresh! A proud product of Zeppelin II". The signature hand written below the "ad" says "Suzy Beal". (not sure if the signature was an admission or a promotion?)

Message: When you talk to people in other places about grunion hunting they often give you a look of skepticism and you just know they file the information right next to snipe hunting. But most people who have lived in SoCal for any length of time have warm memories of beach parties, fire pits, and trying to stay up until the grunion came to spawn. I bring this up because tonight starts a four day period of grunion runs at the local LA/OC beaches. When I was small a gunny sack was used to haul our booty but I read a plastic pail is ?proper? equipment now. If anyone decides to go, remember it?s hands only and anyone over 16 needs a fishing license.
Thanks Jerry....

Message: The last I checked (maybe about a year or so ago), the Proud Bird was still up and running. I've put on political luncheons there back in the 1970s and 1980s. Wonder why nobody has considered it as a reunion venue? Maybe it's changed? Speaking of restaurants, is Pancho's on Highland near Rosecrans still in business? (Larry - I don't see a title for an Ed Wood film in your post.)
Yes, Panchos is there, Ciscos is gone.
