Message: So who remembers "Fright Night With Seymour"? I watched all the classic horror films on Fright Night -- Frankenstein, Dracula, The Blob, The Man With the X-Ray Eyes. And Seymour would "pop in" with comments (his face in a "bubble") about how stupid some of scenes were. This was clearly the inspiration for "Mystery Science Theater 3000" What was the film with all the flying brains with spinal cords (one of which the victim caught and put in the oven?)

Message: Sad news. I received word that Jack Hammer, class of 1968, passed away yesterday, June 2. It makes the time we were able to share together at the NorCal mini reunion several years ago all that much more precious. Jack was a good guy and my friend. Jack has been living in Oakland, Oregon. Arrangements are pending. Rest in Peace, Jack.

July 8, 2006 6:30PM - 2:00AM
Harbor Drive Restaurant
655 N. Harbor Drive
Redondo Beach, CA
Sorry for the late notice, but we ran into some snags. We're getting way too old with way too many responsibilities!
Despite the last minute notice, this will be a great event: cocktails on the patio, private dining room overlooking the harbor, open lounge to dance the night away, tables and chairs and couches to relax on and catch up, and hotels within stumbling distance! We'll be having appetizers during the cocktail hour and a three course buffet dinner, featuring Pasta Primavera, Ponzu Chicken and Sirloin of Beef.
Pricing is not quite set, but should be approximately $65 per person. As soon as it is, you'll have a very short time to get your checks in (I may set up Paypal as well). Billing information to come.
If there is interest, we'll also arrange a golf tournament and/or spa trip in the morning on the 8th and a BYOFAD picnic on Sunday. I'll update the site with details as we have them this week. Again, sorry for the late notice, but this should be fun!

By the way, I have had a Cougar sighting of sorts. A few months ago I was contacted by an old friend, Jan Van Schaik. He found me online and came to visit in Atlanta. He is in Wisconsin and I am planning a visit this Summer. Considering how far we are from Hawthorne, I thought this might qualify. Another TV show that was one of my favorites as a kid was Skipper Frank. I cant find any info on that one though. I think it was LA based also. I saw him once at Inglewood Ave & 138th street at Stellino's Market. He was in the weinnie mobile of all things. I thought that was reserved for Oscar Meyer? I guess you get confused easier as a kid.

Message: The series' title was changed to "Jet Jackson, Flying Commando" from "Captain Midnight" because the program went into syndication after its initial two-year run by the ex-sponsor (Ovaltine), who still owned the rights to the "Captain Midnight" title. Soundtrack references to "Captain Midnight" were overdubbed.
When I was a kid watching this show, the names of the actors meant little to me. Today, though, I like to see who played what on the shows I enjoyed as a kid and try to see the context of their careers at that time. Although it's interesting to see what Richard Webb did before the show, it is simply amazing to see all the movie and TV work that Olan Soule did over the years---he was everywhere! No doubt I saw him back then in other shows, but I can't remember if I recognized him as Captain Midnight's lab person.
The first program to include audience participation through the use of the famous "Secret Decoder Ring" which allowed the afterschool TV viewer to decode Jet Jackson's secret orders.
Most of this Info was obtained from a website for this show.
I hope it helped.

Message: I was too young to actually remember Vampira but a few years back I got to know somebody who knew her. She used to hang out with James Dean at various haunts (pun intended) throughout Hollywood but especially The Villa Capri. It was rumored after Deans car crash that she had put a curse on him. Thats Hollywierd for ya. I have a client that used to be known as Voluptua on another show similar to Vampiras. Anybody remember her? I do remember Jeepers Creepers from about 62 or 63. We used to go over to my Cousins house and turn on channel
13 at about 8 or 9 pm. I dont know which was worse, the old scary movies, or the campy host.

Message: Greetings. This is my first posting in quite some time. Don't see many listings from my class. I'll be 69 soon, and to celebrate, I bought a 41 Plymouth (on ebay). Thats the trouble with living alone - nobody to keep me from doing such foolish things. I had an interesting year. Went on a cruise, spent a weekend at Disneyland, and finished by having open heart surgery. But hey, I'm not complaining. Feeling great, just feel nervous at burger places - my bovine valve starts acting up! (Now lets see - drop in a 440, then...naw).

Message: Seeing the Captain Jet reference, who was one of my favorites too, made me think of another mid-fifties character. Who remembers Vampira? Dubbed as the original glamour ghoul with her 17 inch waist. I had to look it up but her real name was Maila Syrjäniemi. Even at five or six years old I remember watching her take her Saturday Night bath while hosting horror films on channel seven. She was always a sight to see with her eyeball and vulture blood cocktails and hunting for her pet spider. It seems to me it was longer but her bio shows the show lasted just one year in 1954.

Message: Hi everyone, I am looking for my ex husband Raymond Binder. My life has been miserable without him and if anyone has information on this most wonderful man I would love to have a response. I believe he is probably homeless and wondering the streets of Beverly Hills. If he takes his medication on a regular basis he is just fine. He will be drawing his first SS check in August and would love to spend the money with him. If you meet him, he is bald, but extemely good looking and a lively personality. He has never met a stranger.
If I see any of my classmates with him, it would really upset me.
Regards to all,
Raymond Binder

Playing musical chairs around the chest high biology tables - don't ask me what that occasion celebrated! But, Linda Burgin & I were the final two who had to jump up on the table to get to the last winning chair! Wish I had a video of that little escapade. But his class was always fun and surprising.

Message: Hey Bud; I think overall you guys did a good job with the tournament. This is one of the ways to help John offset some of the expenses he has, as you know John works his butt off to keep us all together. And the raffle tickets were a great idea to help out our Cougartown web site.
Bud, Wade, & Jill I?d like to personally thank you for all your hard work??You the (wo)man?
FYI Rich Sloan's group had a putting contest I won with a 35 footer.
Thanks for asking us for suggestions for next year.
1. I would like to see us sell more raffle tickets I would suggest we have a table setup at least 2 hours before we T off so that the volunteers have time to sell more.
2. I would like to see John Baker attend this event so we can tell him how much we all appreciate COUGARTOWN.
3. Shotgun start would be nice so that we all finish as a group.

Message: Hey Cougs, First, I'd like to thank Mssr. Baker for continuing to administer and support this site. I finally joined using the PayPal option and encourage anyone who uses and enjoys the site to do so.
I wanted to share a very happy moment with you that happened because of Cougartown.com. I went to the first multi-year reunion in Manhattan Beach several years ago at the (Raddison or Marriot/can't remember which name it was going under then). During the evening, the names of class members were read that were deceased. I was shocked and dismayed that they named William Harris (Bill to me), my former room-mate and co-worker for several years during the late 70's had passed. I tried for some time to figure out what had happend as we had been out of touch for several years. Lo and behold, after not being on the site for a while, I saw his name & email address in the Alumni listing, so I emailed him. Sure enough, he's alive and kicking in Santa Clarita CA! Without Cougartown, I'd probably never have known.
So thanks again John, you're doing a good thing.
Cheers to all! Rick

Message: Mr. Herd also had a Santa Barbara society background and always had a great tan. He either grew up with or was college room mate with former Milwaukee Braves 3rd Baseman, Eddie Matthews (Sorry, I've got CRS this AM). So, when I got to go to a Dodger-Braves game, Mr. Herd wrote a note to Eddie that got me past an usher and an autograph during pre-game warm-ups. We had a short chat and I could tell they were the best of friends. Mr. Herd was surprised and happy that I did that. He was my biology teacher in my sophomore year, but didn't return the next year. I think he was bored teaching. Who knows?
