Message: I am probably one of the few who is actually grateful that his hair thinned a bit. It was too thick and wavy (my daughter thought it was an Afro). I generally kept it in a "JFK-style" up to the age of 17 when I went for a more styled cut (remember the "dry look?"). Beehives for girls wasn't really the look in my high school years but they did have their hair puffed up (they could have passed for The Supremes). Facial hair was another matter. I had my usual mustache but also had my sideburns grow out and connect to it (see Larry Bach's photo as an example) in the latter part of my senior year. I remember a couple of the coaches got after Don Pike for some facial hair and were forcing him to shave and/or get a cut and he screamed, "What about HIM [meaning me]?!" They just ignored him and took him in for his makeover and left me alone.

Message: OH wow John, I forgot about that story of the black widow spider in the beehive!! I think it must have been a wives(husbands) tale.
I remember seeing a kid with a mohawk in the early 60s but I have no idea who he was. ss

Message: John, I never had a beehive. I was only a Freshman in 1969 and Beehives were WAY OUT by then. But on behalf of all gals who had the beehive 'do,' at least the only adverse affect was that the person in back of you in a theatre could not see the screen. ss
Wasn't there a story of a Black Widow Spider who lived in one of those things?

Message: Maybe some of my old Wiseburn buddies can help me here. I seem to remember one of our group coming to school with a Mohawk one time in the late 50's. I think it was Sepulveda but it might have been Anza. I remember a name to go with it too but I?m not near sure enough to say. Anybody out there remember who it was?

Message: Hey Laura, I remember your brother Erik showing up at York Elementary with his mohawk, 3rd grade I think. He was also the first kid I remember riding a unicycle. Erik and I hung out a lot back then. How is he doing? Please tell him I said hi. I'll bet he'll remember when we almost accidentally caught Hawthorne Intermediate on fire when we thought it would be fun to burn a dried up Christmas tree under the overhang near the 7th grade buildings. Boy did we get lucky. Now it can be told. I don't think I have ever been so worried. We weren?t arsons just dumb kids. My sincerest apologies go out to Hawthorne?s Police and Fire Departments.
Hey Dennis, Fortunately (or unfortunately) the statute of limitations doesn't run out on that one until next week. I'll notify the proper authorities.

Message: Speaking of long hair on guys?I liked long hair on guys when I was in high school, but I am not a fan of it now. I am not really in favor of buzz cuts either. Many guys don't look good in that extreme of a cut, in my humble opinion. On the other hand, I do not like people telling me how to wear my hair so to each his/her own. Having just cut my long hair to a short cut, I know everyone had an opinion about it. By some of the reactions I got at work, you would have thought either I found a cure for cancer or I committed a crime instead of just cutting my hair! One fad I really think looks terrible is the baggy pants young guys are wearing that are barely hanging on. More than once, I have seen FAR more than I wanted to because they could not keep those baggy pants up. WHEN is this ridiculous mistake going away?
Everything passes, Sharon. I know when these baggy guys reach 50 and are looking at pictures from today, they will hate those pics. Kinda like you girls from the 60s in your Beehives.

Message: Speaking of hair, some of you may remember my brother, the kid with the first mohawk in Hawthorne (in the late 60s). He talked my mom into giving him the haircut one summer and kept it for a long time . . . all the barbers in the Boys' Market plaza used to give him lollipops whenever we walked past.
And speaking of reunions, kudos to Sharon Branigan for a terrific reunion invite and set-up. Class of 76, if you haven't gotten an invitation yet, go find her. It will be a fantastic weekend!

Message: Speaking of long hair in the 70s, I think my Sr. Photo says it all. I grew my hair out in 7th grade and loved it. I didn?t care what people thought and no one was going to make me cut it off. That?s was until I wanted that job at Bob?s Big Boy on Hawthorne and Century. At my interview the manager told me he would hire me but knew I would never take the job because I would have to cut my hair. I left and went straight to the barber on Prairie and 132nd ??. I was back in and hour with my fresh ?Regular Men?s Hair Cut?. I was making 10 cents over minimum wage the next day. A year or so later I got the same haircut that my dad gave me in the kitchen every summer, during the first week of Basic Training. I?ve kept it short ever since. But I?m still a hippie at heart. Recently my two sons (5 and 8) decided that thay want to grow out their ?Hippie Hair? ahh, That?s my boys!

Message: For years after high school, I kept my hair cut short and looking sharp. I traded out my printing business services with Gerard, owner of "Hot Hair" in Orange, CA, for the best hair cuts. I would sit down in the barber's chair and let Gerard cut away. I was always pleased with his work. Then in 1989, after my father passed away, I sold my business and moved my family back to my father's home city of Colorado Springs. I tried to find a barber that would be able to cut my hair as well as Gerard. After four years of searching and always ending up with bad hair cuts, I gave up. I decided to become a long hair once again. It's been over 12 years since then and I have no regrets. My only complaint is that it is thinner and is slowly turning white. When I dress up for historical reenactments and speaking at symposiums, I find that my long hair helps me stay in character. I'm not sure if I'll ever go back to wearing short hair again. But you never know what will happen.
Jerrys Barber Shop in Hawthorne's been whackin' mine off for the last 20 years and I'm happy as a clam.

I?ll be somewhere in South America - the cartel has hasn?t given me my marching papers yet. I promise I will be at the next one. If any one of you has never been to Cruise Night then this is the one to go to. It is always an interesting time. I hope the weather holds out that night!

Message: Terrys story about shoulder length hair is one I think we all shared in the early 70s. My Dad used to say "When are you going to stop growing your damn hair". Hummmm... Then about 10 years ago when my son was in high school, everybody buzzed their hair Marine Corps short and I found myself saying "When are you gonna STOP cutting your damn hair"! Cosmic retribution I suppose.
Yep, Crew cuts or buzz cuts were popular in the early 60s too so I guess we've come full cycle on that.

Message: John, Thank God it was the Seventies then,......Oh well....Now-a-days my hair is kept "short". Back then..........what can I say, it was "in style". : ) John, your reaction to my "pony-tail" story sounds alot like my older brother's reactions (are you sure we're not related? Just kidding) They went to HHS also, all three of them, and all three "wamped" on me too for the "pony tail" (God, I was young and stupid then).
Yeah, we all had a little of that in us.

Does anyone out there know Shaaron Netherton's current email address?
I'll tell you if you had a pony tail in the early 60s you would have been severely whupped on by somebody.

I used to SAT score for her when she was couching for the JV basketball team because since my girlfriend "Debbie Pregler" was on the team I just might as well do some work around there. I knew of her 2 brothers too "Gilbert and Richard". I had no idea they had a sister too. Now I got some phone call DOING! I Know Marla posted once on CT a year or 2 ago but hasn't seen her since.

Message: For anyone who didn't show up for the last reunion, it was definitely their loss. A smaller, wiser and better looking everyday group, paid and played their way through the weekend. A little known fact: the class has become the wine makers of the "Old South Bay." For organizers, Cathy, Dani, Don and Cheryl a huge thank you. Can't wait for the next one---still have a wine headache.
Hey Jim, Glad you had a great time. Attention Class of 65, you have another one coming up in October. Reunions are magical, do NOT miss them.

Message: Some time back we had a little game of Six Degrees of Cougartown. For years I've been telling my (teenage) son and his buds about how everything always goes back to Hawthorne. They always rolled their eyes when I'd say that. But I got the last laugh. Thanks to Don DT I went to the Wikipedia site for HHS. Everyone knows about the most famous alumni, The Beach Boys and Olivia Arias Harrison. But I found someone the teens can relate to- also an HHS alumni is Greg Hetson of the band Bad Religion, a fave of my boys. Grabbed my 76 Yearbook and sure enough there he is, a frosh when I was a Sr. Also shared Keith Jones' bio with one young man who recently took up discus throwing. His eyes got big as saucers when he read about Keith's first attempt at discus, 170 feet! Had a lot of fun proving to them that it is TOTALLY COOL to be from Hawthorne! Keith, will you autograph a discus for me at the reunion?
