Message: Cougar sighting tonight in Arkansas: Ray Shelley '58 at the Nashville vs. Mena high school football game. Ray's nephew, Ty, is a Nashville policeman and they had had a family pre-game supper. We talked at halftime and I tell you what - Ray looked good and had a great family! Tom, you should've been there, too! Unfortunately for Mena, Nashville won 42-0. In closing, the weather's not looking good this far inland and we're expecting very severe weather and flooding if Rita stalls near Texarkana. Please keep me in your thoughts. Thanks.
Hi Mary Ann, Yes according to brother Tom, Ray has dropped a pound or two and is looking alot like he looked in 1958......or did he say 98? Anyway, the good thing is that you're having fun connecting with the Cougars around you. We'll keep you in our prayers, Mary.

Message: I have not commented yet on the picnic. I don't know if words can accurately describe what all transpired that day. It was cause for me to pause and recall some of the words to our alma mater. In particular, "Let friendships begun, stay true till the end".....I stood back at first and just watched in amazement. You can't help but be drawn in by it all. It then became my goal to introduce myself to as many Cougars as I could.(I didn't drive 400 some miles to just sit!) To the Archibeque family ~ what a privilege to meet some of the very first Cougars to walk the halls of HHS. To Carl Johnson, David McConnell, and Bill Sloey from my class? Thank you for being there. I'm so glad I got to touch base with you. And the Richards clan ~ Jim, Merry, and Fred.....what a pleasant surprise. But the cutest couple award has got to go to Harry Plotkin and Kathy Brooks, celebrating 25 years together that weekend! I came away with two new friends also...Sue and Sharon Bierman. You gals are a blast...and I hope that was the first chapter of many more to come. For those who I met and failed to mention ~ the pleasure was all mine.
And Cindy Whittaker? Trust me - you're going to love Jim Pasternak's book! Just remember we are all like coins ~ we each have two sides.....
A friend is one of the nicest things you can have, and one of the best things you can be.
John Baker? You're one loveable Teddy Bear. Thank You.

P.S. I made it back to Sacto in 6 1/2 hours!
Well maybe like a big fat Grizzly but thanks for taming it down a little. You too know the secret. We are all from the same digs and it really doesn't matter what year we graduated, it's all about making new friends from the old neighborhood. Thanks for making the drive.

Message: Hi John, it was great meeting you at the picnic. (I was the one with the homemade Hawthorne Cougar t-shirt!) It was fun meeting other HHS alumni, I just wish I could have stayed longer, but had to rush off to get ready for our 30th reunion that night. Our reunion was in Torrance & it was lots of fun. I still have autographs from Junior High that I shared with those who wrote them 31 years ago & we were hysterical! We (the reunion planning committee) still have some lingering issues with the reunion planning company but Don will post our assessment of their services after everything has been completed. Hey, did anyone see that Hawthorne High was on the news last night? I was watching the 10:00 p.m. news on KTLA (5) and they were talking about the local power outages from the storm, & they said that Hawthorne had lost power & they showed a picture of the Hawthorne High signboard & they said, "Hawthorne High was in the dark". I couldn't believe it. I screamed & yelled & my kids thought I was having an attack of some kind. Oh, and thanks to all who worked on putting the alumni picnic on, it was great. And next year I plan on staying longer :->
Hi Susan, It was nice meeting you too and glad you had a fun time at both the picnic and your reunion. Maybe we'll see you on Cruise Night.

Message: Wow, most despised eh? Well it all depends on what we get to do to be most despised. What bad stuff do we get to do? Maybe we'll end up fighting over who gets the title if the deeds are interesting enough! But if you go against type, Anita would have to be most despised because of the three she is absolutely the sweetest! I can't picture her even getting mad and she has the sweetest little voice. So does this mean we get to dress in character and come to the book signing? Good luck on the book Jim, can't wait to see it...er I mean read it. So now besides an official Cougartown **Uncle Buck's Pretzels** (another plug for ya Jim) snack food, we have our own Cougartown novel! Are we cool or what?
YES WE ARE!!!!

Message: Hi John! After seeing the photo of Paco surrounded by three, good looking chicks I've decided to change the names of the characters in my upcoming book. Michelle, Cindy and Anita will be the main characters. Now I have to decide which girl will be the one "most depised" by the reader. Gotta suggestion? And Paco will be a precious metals broker from Fashion Island in Newport Beach. Thanks for the ideas! Jim
I'm not going there, but keep the John Baker "big guy at Coke" character. Actually if you put a turban on Paco and dyed his beard black, he'd look a lot like an middle eastern arms dealer. Got that character in your new book?
For all who don't know, Jim is a fireman and has written a book about firemen called "Flying Embers". It'll be on Amazon.com real soon. Good luck with the project, Jim.

John, you do us an honour here, keeping us together, if there's ever something to help with, let me know, who else would have done all of this? And to all of you ladies that worked so hard to set up the picnic, unbelievable, you and John are a crew par non. These are a great way to stay together, how about a giant sleepover, LOL?
A sleepover? I don't think so, but all the work on the Picnic has to be given to Sharon Moore Leach. She did an outstanding job, as usual. I do have to thank the Bierman sisters too for supplying the Cougartown Lounge and for hawking Tshirts and Memberships. They always do an outstanding job. Thanks Ed and see you next Saturday at Fosters for Cruise Night 13.

Message: So who can pick me up from Washington to make Cruise Night this Saturday? The CT picnic was a blast! Michelle is right, we are so glad we went. You guys are the best bunch of people. And what fun to have this Hawthorne history in common. John Baker you're even more fun in person than on this web page! Thank you for all of our new friends! Did my sister call you Grandpa? The nerve! Bill Sloey, did you give your brother Jim the hug from me you promised? Paco you're much quieter than I expected... either that or this crowd wears you out (I believe it)! I wish I had more time to have visited with everyone longer. Sharon Leach you are the best! Thanks for all of your hard work. Guess my sister is right that I need to move closer because now I'll be at home pouting that I can't be there when you write about each new get-together! Plus Sharon B - and now her big sister Sue - will beat me up if I don't get down there to go to more events. You guys were great and I miss you already! But your escorts (Jensens you know who you are) were kinda quiet. Oh yea, how could they get a word in edgewise with two wacky gals like you in charge! If you haven't been to one of these gatherings, drop everything next time and GO! It's worth it just to meet our leader JOHN! Thanks again John!
Hey Cindy, FINALLY I meet you two. Thanks so much for coming. I knew you'd have at least as much fun as I did. Now MOVE CLOSER so you can join in with the rest of us wackos. Grandpa.....

Message: Had a great time at the picnic. Got to meet a lot of Cougars from other classes. Thanks to Walter for the music and thanks to the Sharon and Sue for all the help and selling the T-shirts. I bought a Beach Boys T-shirt from the City of Hawthorne yesterday and I am going to wear it while I am in Great Britain. Thank you to everyone who showed up and helped to make this a very special occasion. Not everyone who signed up showed up, but by the ticket count that I gave away, we had 133 people show up. People were in and out all day. Viola won the reindeer antler game. I can?t wait to see those pictures. We?re going to blackmail her with them. The Whittaker girls showed up and are still gorgeous. Quite a few people from the class of 75 showed up before their reunion. I also went to the VFW breakfast this morning. What a great event. They put on a really great breakfast. Jan Blomsterburg does the cooking and let me tell you it was great! Again thanks to everyone that showed up.
Yep, the breakfast was very good, as usual and the picnic yesterday was GREAT!! The Archibeque clan showed up with about 8 people from different classes and yes, I finally got to meet the Whittakers face to face after what---7 years? Thanks Cindy and Michelle for adding to our picnic. Hope all the 75ers had a great reunion last night too.

Thanks Michele for being such a very special date, worked out fine. We need more people at the VFW, what a great deal that was, the food was stupendous, tasted better than most restaurants. For all my new friends at Cougartown, a long, fulfilled and illustrious life to you all, it is great company, and always someone here to lend an ear.
