Message: Hi, I am not entirely sure if there is anything on this site about Mr. Nyman yet, but I just wanted to let you know that Mr. Nyman recently passed away, and I am greatly disturbed that there is nothing up on the Hawthorne High School marquee I was wondering if they just overlooked it or if it was requested that nothing be announced? In anycase, for those of you who really loved Hawthorne High School I thought you would want to know that our very first principal has passed away. I like the site very much it really does justice to what i had imagined hawthorne would have been like had i been around.
You have GOT to be kidding......

I will scan copies of the instructions so that those of you who decide to participate can have them emailed to you directly afterward. Got my new CT T-Shirt, and I'll wear it outside my jacket if I have to! Bringing the convertible, so glad to hear the rain is going to be gone by noon. Cause honey we are going topless! We will be there at 5:00 with bells on! I'll bring my yearbooks as long as everyone ignores my adolescent notations on who I thought was a "fox". Lizzy, can't wait to try the flan, it looked fabulous and I've decided to give it a tiny taste! Looking forward to mingling more. Just remember folks, I'm the Deaf Cougar (not the defleopard) so you have to SPEAK UP when you want to talk with me. Huzzah!
Too many Rock Concerts with the Hippie, huh. My bad ear is too many Drag Races at Lions.
OK Kathleen, I want to sign up for lanyard making. I learned about 50 years ago at Ramona but the education has faded....please enlighten me.
Dizzy I hope you're making more than one pan because if you aren't, it'll be like Jesus feeding the multitudes, only you don't have the power. See you all tomorrow at 5pm.

Message: I drove in at 3AM from Phoenix, Arizona, in the pouring rain and I'm so glad to be back at the beach. I've been helping my daughter and her little family move in to their new house. There are new towns popping up out there so fast that some of them don't have zip codes yet. Every street and store is sparkling new. My mother told me that Hawthorne tract homes were very much the same....a new town where farms once were. Everythings a changin' and it's all good! I'll be home baking tonight since I promised 'EVERYONE' some flan and if it's as great a turn out as it seems, I'd better get crackin. I'm looking forward to seeing my old friends and meeting some of the Cougars who are silently lurking out there. Don't be shy....come on out and say hello. No time like the present to create some good memories. We've got some good vibrations going on here. Dizzy Lizzy the Rowdy Goddess of Cougartown!
Hey Liz, Thanks and we'll see you and the FLAN tomorrow at 5pm.

Message: Too bad about Holly's restaurant. My aunt worked there as a waitress in the early 1970's so I got free desserts. I don't feel guilty either because the police also got free dessert and coffee. Of course, I was a juvenile delinquent and they were protecting the city from juvenile delinquents so maybe I should feel guilty. Anyone else remember Holly's "Orange Freeze", a fountain concoction of 7-up and orange sherbet? Then there was the "Red Onion' a couple of doors down and the "House of Raymond" (could never figure out why it was called "Mel's" House of Raymond). It was the only place in Hawthorne with frog legs on the menu. Yummm... My aunt worked there for awhile too but I never did get any free frog legs. Darn! Maybe Foster's Freeze has 'em frozen on a stick and dipped in chocolate. Guess i'll find out Saturday. : )
Yes, and along there somewhere was Walden's Steak House, another pretty good place to eat.
Tomorrow it's supposed to rain and Saturday it will clear so Cruise Night is still on. Should be a cool evening so bring your Senior Jackets.

Message: I was sorry to hear of the destruction of the Hawthorne Grill (Holly's). I'm not sure if you're aware of this or not, but the Hawthorne Grill was the setting for two of the key scenes in Quentin Tarrantino's masterpiece film, Pulp Fiction. I was searching for the location of the Hawthorne Grill, because I wanted to visit it on my next trip to L.A., when I discovered via several websites that it no longer exists.
Like you, I hate the fact that it was demolished.
Sincerely, Tim Kreitz
http://www.timkreitz.com
Yes Hollys/Hawthorne Grill was a landmark in Hawthorne and in my opinion should somehow have been saved. Actually it was already shut down when QT filmed Pulp Fiction, but movie or not, Hawthorne Grille with its 50s Googie style architecture was one of Hawthorne's jewels. It is always hard to let go of the past. Another of Hawthorne's Googie jewels is Chips Restaurant on 119th and Hawthorne BL, built in the mid 50s, and should be guarded. Thanks Tim, I hated it too....
