And he saw through the window a sight

Message: I love you guys! My tree is up, the little Christmas village scene is assembled, wreaths are on the front door and I just cancelled Friday night plans to stay home and bake. I loved everyones Christmas stories...in fact...I'm going to go to Disneyland this week with a couple of kids just to bring it up a notch. My daughter and grandson moved to Arizona last month but they will be here for Christmas so Santa will be coming here for sure. I hope all of you have found a little bit of the holiday spirit in some of these stories. I'll be dropping off some toys for the fire dept to give to those in need....that's the single most powerful spirit lifter I know of. Have a wonderful Christmas everybody! Flan for everyone!!! DZ
Gee Liz, Glad you've found the spirit. Actually I've gotten some spirit myself from all the Christmas stories. Thanks all for the Christmas remembrances from Hawthorne and your youth. It IS a very special time of the year.

Message: Ahhhh, Christmas in Hawthorne. I love reading all of the Christmas memories. When my boys were little I did everything I could to remake a Christmas of my younger days. They were the best. Christmas Eve the house was always filled with a lot of friends and family. Then Christmas morning all 5 Freeman kids converged upon the living room to find lots of goodies under the tree. Then all day on Christmas Day we played outside with the neighbors with all of our new and shiny toys. Roberta Caldwell (HHS67) lived 2 doors from me, and we always seemed to get the same doll. We used to go caroling, and yes I remember the visits to Santa at the Fire Station. They were "no hassle" times, and they have left me with wonderful memories. In fact Paco's Pics have me going through all of the Freeman family pictures that I have. My only hope now is that I have given my boys and my grandchildren some Christmas memories that they will share years from now. A very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all of the Haytowners that made my childhood memorable. Hugs, Jan
Thanks Jan, and Merry Christmas to you and yours.....

Message: Well, a deep subject, since my brother and sister have waded in to CT for their Xmas memories, thought I would too!! I recall delivering Christmas presents to the City Employees from H.& C. Disposal. This was a great job for me. I had a '69 El Camino and would load up around 7 AM and for the better part of the day and into the evening I'd be driving all over Hawthorne delivering packages to the employees. All the head honchos of each department and their families would receive some great gifts. In those days 90% of the employees lived in Hawthorne so I got to know where they all lived, made a note of who lived where so not to get caught if I was up to no good on that street. The tips were great and the pay was well worth the time. Especially if I got someone who lived up in PV or the South Torrance areas. Those presents were always held for last, after 5PM and they always had a little something special inside. Would like to wish all Alumni and CT visitors a very Merry Christmas. Hug your loved ones and ask each one what Christmas means to them. John, great job this year. Go Bears and OU by 7.
Thanks Wade; Merry Christmas to you and yours and I'll take USC and 7.

I just put a hole in the hood for a scoop and was driving it around. Well we forgot to put the bolts back in the hood and it flew about 40' in the air and slammed into the street. All the guys came out of the station seeing what happened just started busting up when they saw we were okay.

I REMEMBER GETTING OUT OF SCHOOL AND RUNNING ACROSS THE STREET AND HELPING THE FIREMEN SET UP SANTA'S HUT, AND WATCHING AS THEY WOULD SET THE LARGE CHRISTMAS TREE. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL THE BRADFORDS, FRYS, HARTSELS, BLISS AND ALL COUGARTOWN. KEITH JONES, YOU'RE STILL WELCOME TO COME TO COLORADO AND SEE A REAL WHITE,COLD, CHRISTMAS. Message: That is a nice photo of the luxurious interior of the 5-car. Most of the ones I rode had wood seats with no padding. The padded ones were harder to flip in the other direction at the end of the line after they got worn and torn. Notice the open light bulbs in the ceiling. I wonder what OSHA or the insurance Risk Manager would say about that now. As I recall there was a cord just over the windows that passengers would pull to signal the conductor that their stop was next, and there was an emergency-stop cord strategically placed high up out of kids? reach. Good thing it was up high because I was curious to see that would happen but never could reach it. Baxter
I remember the driver walking down the aisle at the end of the line at Broadway, and would flip the seats as he walked, get out and raise the electrode up to the 600 volt DC wire hanging directly over the car (talk about your OSHA problem).

Message: This subject may have already been discussed, but while at the grocery store browsing the magazine racks one cover reminded me that this is the 50th anniversary of the legendary 55 Chevy Small-Block V8. The actual introduction date was October 28th ?54, a grand and memorable date for cruisers and street racers around the world!! This is also another good reason to celebrate during cruise night on Feb 12th.
The 185hp 265 evolved into many engines over the last 50 years. Versatile, the engine was at home in pickups as well as high performance Corvette and Camaro versions. Not well known, but the first Chevrolet V8 was produced in 1917. So hail to the small block. May it go on for another 50 years. Thanks Baxter....

Anyway, no matter what if he did something wrong he would always tell my mom or dad and I got in trouble. Message: Yo Ho Ho! Speaking of stealing Christmas lights. Steve Sturges and I would also perform that dastardly deed. Only we didn't do it to shut down the strand. We took them and then threw them as high as we could over the street. They made a neat "pop" when they hit the asphalt. Of course, we then had to run like hell because the combination of the "pop" and the tinkling of broken glass usually caught someone's attention. Never got caught for that one (amazingly). But now, I'm sure my little sister Noreen will read this excerpt and tell my Dad. She never could resist "ratting on me."
And one more Christmas past memory. As I mentioned earlier, we only got one gift each year. So how come, in the second grade I asked for a BOOK???!!!! It was a huge tome about natural history and covered everything from amphibians to birds. But a BOOK?? For Christmas??? MY ONLY PRESENT??? I couldn't play with it. It didn't buzz or clink, or have flashing lights? It didn't move or talk or sparkle. It just layed on a table. So why was I even happy? What was I thinking? A DAMN BOOK? They shoulda sent me to therapy that year (oh well).

Last year she had to pull out cause of her knee was swelling up and she pulled out at the 11 mile. This year she made it all the way with only about a month training. She workouts everyday and does the Pilates and spinning but her father in law comes in from Japan each year to run the Honolulu Marathon and talks her into it. He does a 3:30 marathon. She did it this year in 6:07 but he is putting her on a schedule to do it next year in 4:30 so we will see. I will have pics soon and put one up on cougartown. Out of 32,000+ who started the marathin she finished 14,001 or something like that. Only 25,000+ finished the course.

Message: My fondest memories of Christmas in Hawthorne was when dad would take my sister and I to Disneyland on Christmas Eve and mom would set up the tree, decorate and put the presents under it, make cookies and put out the X-mas candy. Then when the Christmas parade at Disneyland was over we would come home to our own Christmas wonderland that my parents had created. Christmas was always an exciting and special time at our house! A side note...I just moved mom and dad closer to us (within walking distance) and mom is still at it. She brought over her Christmas cookies and decorated our house inside for us to come home to after a weekend trip! It was like stepping back in time! Thanks Mom and Dad!
That's what it's all about. Thanks Mike....
