Message: The annual Congregation of Cougars known as ?Moose Mountain Jam? is about to take place in Greenwood, CA. This will be our 12th annual get-together hosted by Mike Taylor (HHS ?71) and his ever-patient and understanding wife, Kim. The Taylors have graciously opened their home, barn, pool, and former volleyball court to a number of us who bring songs, stories, instruments, families, friends, food and drink, for a couple of days of music and reunion. Cougar alumni include: Keith Young ?71, Eric Evans ?71, Ken Sheldon ?69, Danny Melendrez ?70, Betsy Watts Wright ?76, Don Watts ?71, Fred Mintun ?71, along with local friends and neighbors. My daughter, Courtney, has been attending since before she was born, and it?s now the highlight of her summer vacation.
The point that I am slow to make here is that whenever there is an opportunity to get together with old friends, be they from school or wherever, make every effort to attend! Please do not make the mistake of taking for granted ?next time?. These moments are precious, and are gone in the blink of an eye? Thanks, John, for the space, and for CT!

Message: Many of the kids that went to Anza during this period moved away because their houses were bought up by the Century Freeway project. Those that are named, were not in the affected area between Judah and La Cienega and between 119th St. and 116th St.. They went on to Jose Sepulveda (I remember all of them there) for 3rd grade thru 6th grade. I recall some at Dana and Hawthorne High. Steve Collins moved away in 2nd or 3rd grade and re-appeared at Hawthorne High in 1977. John Hooper died in a car crash on his way to, I think Oklahoma, where his parents had moved.

Message: Point of topic - Regarding Dana School & Principal Manyon-
There was a local boy in our neighborhood, Gary George, who was a real character back in the day. Anyway, he sort of developed a friendship with Dana Principal, Mr Manyon. Gary George managed to befriend Mr Manyon through all the detention due to misbehavior.
So anyway, as Gary told the story...
Mr. Manyon was THE actual character "Manyon" from the play/movie MR ROBERTS.
As Gary explained it to us back then, Mr Manyon was stationed on the Navy "skow" with the writer (of the play Mr. Roberts) Thomas Heggen. Here is where it gets complicated...
evidently, Heggen sort of exchanged names & personalities, in order to allow for some anonimity within his old Navy crew.
Anyway next time you watch Mr. Roberts on Turner Cable TV Classics...think of our own Mr. Manyon as actually knowing the man who was the basis for the immortal Mr Roberts.
P.S. Gary also mentioned Mr.Manyon told him how he came to become scared with fire...but I do am at a loss for those details...

Neil, I remember Jon Sloey was one of those hypnotized in the 1970 assembly you mentioned. After the assembly, Linda C. (Class of '72), more or less 'flipped out' and had to be escorted away by HHS staff members. I think she was already high on something before the assembly and the hypnosis, though not intended for her, somehow pushed her around the bend. Cool assembly!

Message: I have enjoyed reading all the recent recollections of the home deliveries of milk and bread. At our home on Burl Avenue just across Broadway from HHS, milk was delivered by the Gold Crown delivery driver; bread, cookies, the world's best chocolate covered donuts were of course from the Helms Bakery. They would even bring a decorated birthday cake with a few days notice. How about the Watkins Spice man, the Jewell Tea guy, Fuller Brush man, Good Humor driver and in the early fifties there was still even an ice truck making deliveries in the Del Aire neighborhood.
We had only one car and dad drove it to work, so stay at home moms were happy to have service to their door. It was just a short walk to Groves Market on Inglewood Avenue just north of 120th. I remember getting a loaf of bread, a quart of milk and a pound of ground round for less than a buck. That left me a nickel or two for a Snickers Bar at Soloman's Sundry store and maybe a Coke at Nick and Dick's Mobil station.
You mentioned everyone but Fergie the egg man, the blind broom salesman, and the Avon lady. I remember Bob Reagan's (HHS62) Uncle Ed was the local Watkins man. He looked a lot like Colonel Sanders with his white beard and mustache. Great memories, Tom, thanks....
