Message: Dear Cougars and especially Jodi Alexander,
Thanks for the memories! A member of the class of '75 who remembers Miss Black! Miss Black was a treasure but I know she was old when I had her for my first teacher ever in 1949! I started school in the first grade because my mother wouldn't send me to school at the height of the polio epidemic. Does anyone remember Mrs. Johnson? Pearl was our sixth grade teacher and some of us had her again as our eighth grade teacher at Hawthorne Intermediate. Pearl was a wonderful person and we kept in touch practically until her death.
Anyway, Jodi - Thanks for the warm and fuzzy memory of Ramona. It was an ideal time (the 50s) and place (Hawthorne) to grow up in America. My best to you all and have a wonderful summer.

Message: While cleaning out the garage today, I I wondered how many Americans gave their lives for their country; to whom we owe honor and gratitude on Memorial day; from the beginnings of the United States until now. Here are some rough calculations.
American Revolution, 1775-1783:
(approx. 4,500 died)
War of 1812, 1812-1815
(approx. 2,500 died)
War with Mexico, 1846-1848
(approx. 13,500 died)
War Between the States, 1861-1865
(approx. 620,000 Americans died, both sides)
Spanish American War, 1898-1902
(approx. 2,500 died)
First World War, 1917-1918
(approx. 116,500 died)
Second World War, 1941-1945
(approx. 405,000 died)
Korean War, 1950-1953
(approx. 54,500 died)
Vietnam War, 1964-1975
(approx. 58,000)
Gulf War, 1990-1991
(approx. 530 died)
Iraq, 2003-
(approx 815 dead)
I noticed today on the Cougartown Vietnam page there were twenty-seven names of fallen Cougars and neighbors.
One was my cousin, Lynn Matteson, died 23 Dec 1968. The ultimate sacrifice he made combined with over a million others allows us today to open up a cool one, light up the BBQ, play with our kids and/or grandkids, and enjoy a nice, long, warm weekend, (and put out the flag if one remembers to); in the best nation on earth.
Don't forget that freedom isn't free.
God Bless America
Hey Larry, Thanks for all the math and yes, we've lost a few people for our freedom. Since the American Revolution, about 8 people a day. This is not counting our Civil War dead. Freedom is NOT free. God Bless America and God Bless the United States Armed Forces.

Here's a few more names I remember from Ramona:
Mrs. Scutter, Kindergarten, Miss Black 1st grade, Mrs. Conger 2nd Grade, Mrs. Wareham, 3rd Grade, Mrs. Bright 4th Grade, Mr. Seagal 5th Grade and Mr. Nagaoka 6th grade.
Mr. Ray Fry was the principal, Mabel Henderson was the school secretary, Mrs. Collins and Mrs. Andrews were yard duties, and Mr. Leiberger was the Janitor. I remember Mrs. Peterson that worked in the cafeteria and I guess that's about all I can remember, except milk was 3 cents and a fudgesicle was 5 cents. I had lunch with Mrs. Custer and Mrs. Wareham last January, 92 and 93 years old respectfully and still going strong!

Although I would of LOVED to of been there, I have been in the middle of moving and setting up house. Having Dori Guiliani cater lunch sounds like a plan; can I drive the 'beverage' golfcart and serve up some ICE COLD beer....err....I mean, some refreshing soft drinks to go with the Italian subs? And, why is this an annual thingy? Can't you guys get together and play golf every couple of months or so, like the cruise night get-togethers? I will DEFINITELY have to sharpen up my miniture golf game a bit! ;))) Everybody play hard and stay safe this Memorial Day weekend. Don't forget what it really is all about. Say a special pray for all the men and women who are in harms way this holiday weekend.
Gosh, let the people get home from work to see the one that's up there. Lots of people don't check the website but every two or three days.

Message: Cougar Sighting! Yesterday while I was out trying to find neat gifts for some of my graduates, I heard, "What high school did you graduate from?" I said proudly, "Hawthorne High." It was Joyce Savisky Chance... we had a very nice chat, she was very helpful. As my husband and I were leaving the store, however, the "thief" buzzer went off. Once! Twice... It just kept buzzing. Joyce just wouldn't let us leave. Actually, it turned out just fine. It was a very pleasant sighting.
So what you're saying is, you had a very nice chat, but if you were trying to lift a birthday card, Joyce was going to push the La Habra Police panic button on a sister Cougar?
For all who don't know, Joyce is my ex and fellow 62er. Great sighting, Ricki.....

What is probably happening is that someone who has my e-mail address in their computer may have a virus and it is sending out spam mail with the peoples addresses that are located in someone elses address book. This is a common occurrence with a worm. Just don't open mail with my address unless you know I actually sent it.
Walter sorry to hear that nobody is interested in having a picnic this summer. If anyone is interested, e-mail me and let me know. There is a great park in Long Beach called El Dorado Park. It has everything including a great nature center. If anyone is interested in setting a picnic up some time in June or July let me know and we can reserve a site. It's free and we could all bring our own food and games. Think about it everyone.
Thanks Sharon...
