Message: For those Cougars who know that I live in Claremont, I am fortunate enough to be able to report that Linda and I are not among those who lost their homes in the Grand Prix fire. It was, however, touch and go at about 3:30 AM Sunday when burning embers and twigs were falling from the sky, touching off fires all around our house. There were a few burned out vehicles and one house about 200 yards from us burnt to the ground. Our damage was essentially superficial, caused by the fire-generated wind, which blew back toward the fire, sounding like a blast furnace. Our power was out for a day and a half, and we got our phone back on Tuesday afternoon. Had it not been for a few brave people who stayed rather than evacuate, the entire neighborhood would certainly have been destroyed, and several horses and other family pets would have been lost. These 5 or 6 people went up and down the street, climbing fences to check for fires in back yards and putting out several. There was only one fire truck at the end of the block and its crew could only do so much. It really was those brave residents who stayed behind that saved the neighborhood.

Message: I'll echo what Lillian said. (Hi, Neighbor!) The smoke is the worst I've seen out here on the River. I just drove down from Havasu and couldn't see the tail lights of the car 1/4 mile in front of me. My Mom-In-Law was almost evacuated from her home in Hemet, but the wind shifted before it jumped the 7 Hills golf course. Our thoughts and prayers are with those of you effected by the fires. Having a little smoke is a small price for us to pay if the wind shift will help the battle.

Message: I guess without really knowing it I had a heck of a mini Cougar reunion this past weekend. Long time friend Don Isaacs, class of 71 was in for his annual visit from his home on Oahu and Carolyn and I invited a bunch of old friends to celebrate the occasion. We had the Forbes family in, Alan, class of 73, Robb Russell and family, class of 74 and yours truly, class of 74. If only my next door neighbors were home, Richard and Linda Green, 59 and 61 we would have had a full fledged affair. None the less it was a great weekend catching up with a bunch of good ol' friends and telling stories of the good old days. Sorry,I forgot to take pictures, but maybe that was a good thing!
Hey Bud, Nothing like a good old Cougar get-together. Sounds like you had a great time.

Message: Well let me tell you I do miss Florida, went from 85 degrees to 35 degrees in just two short hours by plane. Sad to see all the homes in the news burning and the people desplaced. My mom is in San Diego and had to leave the house for the day. Also sad to read about Woody, I grew up down the street from Sharons family on 137th Place and we played football in the street with Woody and the Clark boys. He will be missed, God bless his family.
Take care all, Art

Message: Hello Cougars. (cough cough) Yes, it's smokey here, though not so much today since the winds have changed. It's very sad what is happening here in California and if you're in the giving mode, the Red Cross is taking donations for the fire victims here. Just mark down in the memo section of your check that it's for the California Fire Victims and it will make it to the right people. I met Woody McCain shortly after he fell in love with my friend Sharon. We were in the seventh grade. That was the Hawthorne romance of our generation. Even then I knew he was a special guy. Never met anyone nicer. He was at the last Homecoming Stick and Stien party and he looked great. Robin said it best. When Woody smiled, you couldn't help but smile back. I hope he saves us a seat in the bleachers. As for yearbook quotes, "Dizzy Lizzy your a pizzy"....Bebop Hegg That was the first time I was called Dizzy Lizzy. Lot's of "You're bitchen, have a bitchen summer" My mom worried about that. She asked me if it hurt my feelings....Ha! Stay cool Cougs! You're all bitchen.

Message: Well, here I sit 300 miles away and we are totally engulfed in smoke from the Southern California fires. Our panaramic view of surrounding mountains in all directions are obscured by the smoke - all morning the coloring has been an eerie goldish color with the Sun trying to shine through - now it is a ghostly gray. Our neighbor across the Lake, Lake Havasu City is all hazy - I may live here but my heart is from whence I came good old L.A and the Beach Towns, but I'm still in California folks - I'm a California Girl and always will be - We here at Chemehuevi and Havasu Lake, California send our thoughts and prayers your way - stay well and take care.
Oh, about things that people wrote in your El Molino - the big word back then was "bitchin" and quite a few people used that word to express themselves like "hope you have a bitchin summer" my Mom did not understand that language at all!! I explained to her that "it's just the way kids talk nowadays Mom"!!

Thanks Lillian.....

Message: In the 60's I worked with Woody's dad at Kenneth Chevrolet, just after he had closed their retail clothing store in Hawthorne. Words now fail to express the deep sorrow that has struck me with this news of Woody's passing. My most sincere thoughts, and prayers go out to the entire McCain family. Surely, his soul will be at peace, and rest in the hands of our Lord.
Hey Frank, Yes, I too was blessed with knowing Elwood McCain Sr. He was good friends with our family, mainly my grandmother who worked with him at Chaneys department store. I believe the McCains purchased the store from Harold Chaney in the late 50's or early 60's.
I never met Woody Jr. but can see by the outpouring here in Feedback, that he was truly loved by all who came in contact with him. I'm sure, like his father, that he'll be sorely missed.

Message: Realizing all the sorrow from the fires and the death of a well loved Cougar I am duty bound to give the information that my life long friend George Edward Cline Serra High '63 passed away Sunday Oct. 19th of a heart attack in Banning Calif. George was my nextdoor neighbor from my first day in Calif in Feb 1950. The list of things two guys did growing up in Hawthorne were fabulously exciting. We were life long friends, and I am going to miss him badly. You never know when things like this are going to happen, so don't hold back,, tell the ones you love.
Sorry for your loss, Neil. If you have good friends, tell them how you feel NOW. There's no reason to wait.

Message: wow yearbook posting - ok from 1957 -
to a nice girl, cute too, don't go making out with any strange guys in cars. I came to what I liked, saw what I liked and I conquered what I liked. signed by Mike Bollin.
also - Lots of good and bad luck. signed Gary Leavitt
My mother did not understand these and I really didn't explain them. But they are really fun to read 40 some years later.
Re fires - my nephew lost a house in Alpine outside of San Diego and I have a house in Santa Clarita but it is not in danger at the moment as long as fire stays on the other side of freeway. Now I am trying to figure out why I wanted a hillside of brush behind my backyard. Hope everyone else does ok.

Hi Carole, GREAT Yearbook signage and thanks for the fire update too. Hope it's all over real soon.

Message: What a weekend! Saturday morning I looked out my front door and saw a small fire in the foot hills about a mile away. By 1 o'clock the police were going door to door telling us to get ready to leave. While I kept the house and lawn watered, my 14 year old daughter packed the animals and our keepsakes. We were lucky, our house was spared. Houses just down the street didn't survive. Yesterday, after the lights went back on and we could go back home, I unpacked what my daughter thought was important. My 1970 year book was among the things she chose. The insurance adjuster just called and said they would be out tomorrow to check out the smoke damage. Someone was watching over my two daughters and myself Saturday. You can't even imagine in your wildest thoughts what a wild fire and winds are like.
Hi Carol, You're right, I just can't imagine your trauma. I just called my friend, Linda Jones Reynolds HHS62 in Chatsworth and she was on the phone to Dan Dye, another 62er, so we'll see how things go. I know this is just way too much for us to comprehend right now. Lots of people losing their homes, etc. I pray that all turns out OK for you all in the fire area, and things get back to normal real soon. HHSers in the fire areas, please let us know how you are doing.

Message: I'm stunned by the news of Woody McCain's passing. Those of us who knew Woody were certainly blessed to have been able to call him friend. A flood of childhood memories overwhelm me...most center on our Little League baseball years, when he and Paul Clark were on the Hawthorne National Braves and I played for the Red Sox. Although we were baseball rivals back then, we were still good friends. I recall that at our 20th (?) reunion, Woody sought me out just to say hello, and we shared some laughs about those childhood days. Just a very special human being, and although there have been miles and years between us, I will treasure those memories. I count myself especially blessed to have known him. I know all who knew him feel the same. - Gibby

One Cougar song I have yet to hear. "fumble...fumble...F ..u..m..b..l...e...it!" or "Who are we, we are thee C..o.u..g..a..r..s"
Maria J....we had a class together and it is sure nice to see you found CT. I always enjoy pestering you. This is what you wrote to me in my yearbook on 79': "I know I'm going to see you next year so I'm not even going to bother saying goodbye. But what I'm going to say is have fun in the sun" And then you go on to say something about me oweing you a picture. And leaving me your phone number....man...did I ever call you? Maybe John can post my Senior pic here to refresh your memory? It was pretty cool when a gal leaves her phone number....whoohooo! About George Key, a while back he email me about his time in the military and I am honor to hear some of the stories he did as a teenager. What a fun time! sooo much more simpler too. Now this week I have a good ol' friend staying with me whom graduated in 1984. Even though she was a freshman and I was a Senior, we met at where I worked(Taco Bell) and I asked her if she attended HHS and she said "Yes...as a matter of fact I register today". So one great year of welcoming her and her friends to HHS (which I'm still close friends with to this day)....and lasting even longer(what...23 yrs!)...we're still great friends. Her name is Diana "Hantgin" Oach and she lives in Gold Hill Oregon. I have to admit...I am so much closer to friends with CT and the Internet. Thanks John!
