Message: John I haven?t seen that old pool in years. I learned how to swim there way back in the 50?s. It took me a little longer to graduate to the diving pool, but I persevered. I was never able to master the high dive as I have a problem with heights. After learning how to swim I was able to go to Rosecrans and 26th St. beach. Thank you for the old memories. What other photos of old Hawthorne did you take today???? Pat Underwood LHS Class of 1963

We all have different opinions about the war, Bush, etc., but now is the time to come together, wish each other safe passage, and wish our troops well. Stay alert, stay safe, and we will all make it through to better times. Pray for us New Yorkers; stress is high and we have been through a lot (but we are tough). :)

Hi Desiree and welcome to Cougartown. When I was a freshman I wished it was safer and funner too. I think I shined every Seniors shoe on campus. You hang in there and you'll find that your high school years will be a big part of your life. Good luck at HHS and be proud that you're a Cougar as Hawthorne High is a great school with lots of history and tradition.

You are hereby given permission to call me "Harry" on the condition that it does not cause you emotional trauma. The reason I told Paco to get a job and stay with it was that I was reasonably certain he could not get another one. I agree with you that it is time to release him. Pay your Cougartown dues and say John Baker three times and you will be set free, Paco. (I feel so much better having done that)
Seriously, you are both fine gentlemen and IF I had anything to do with it I am delighted.

You know Paco followed your advice…
You once told him he should get a job and never leave it (I don’t know why you told him that) …well it’s been 40 plus years.
Mr. Harry, sir Paco is a man of his word and he doesn’t want to disappoint you... but sir I think its time to let Paco off the hook…
Paco has had only one Job in his life as you suggested, he has been working very hard and it’s time for him to take a break. Paco would love to play Golf every day and enjoy life.
”O” Cindy, Snowed no not at all… see we were in Harry Plotkin's class and we were brainwashed, to this day Paco just can't let go. I've tried over the years to get Paco some help, but nothing has worked to this day…
I'm asking the only person in the world that can help Paco to step up and do the right thing and release Paco from this spell.
Hey even his company is trying to send a message to him. The other day a large truck showed up and dropped off a 10’ Grandfather clock…
Please Mr. Plotkin set Paco free so he can enjoy the rest of his life….
Still squeaky clean and proud of it…

Dear John - Boy I hate letters that start like that. LOL. On Friday of this week I just might become an associate member of the Cougartown as my youngest son Louis starts the last semester of his freshman year at Hawthorne High. Now he will be reunited with most of his former classmates from Dana Middle School. UGH!! You know how I feel about Dana. Now I can get Cougar tee shirts and go to Cruise nights and be legal. Did you forget that I also went to HIS, you
were an eighth grader? Oh that?s right you didn?t associate with underclassmen. I was the chubby dorky looking seventh grader that rode the blue and chrome 26? paperboy special with the Springer front end. How does it feel now to be older then I am? LOL. On Sundays if you wanted to see me you would have to go to Thrifty drugs and hear me sing: ?Get your Sunday Herald here .25 cents.? God I love this town. Support our TROOPS and keep them safe.
Pat Underwood LHS Class of 1963
Hey Pat, No problem with Cougartown Tshirts, as lots of non-HHSers have them and attend Cruise Nights. Also congrats to Louis on being a Cougar. In 3 years he can also add himself to our Alumni list.

Message: What a great contest with the children's pictures. They are adorable. That was truly the age of innocence with the possible exceptance of Paco and the Mammal - with that picture, John, I just can't place you with these two (I could be wrong. What does your Mother say?)
During my 45 years being associated with Dana any rivalry with HIS was a friendly one. If my memory serves me correctly (who am I kidding?) Dana transferred Russ Jacobson to HIS the last week of the eighth grade - not. It was imperative that the faculty at HHS keep Russ's GPA up so he would qualify for sports - simple as that. Actually, the average GPA for Russ and Judy was respectable - you know I love you guys! I've been gone for six years, but Dana used to keep fairly high academic standards. Thanks for the plug, John.
Love to all, HCH
Hi Harry, No I wasn't with those two. All the good looking kids went to HIS.

Message: Hey John I was going through the old feedback pages and I kept reading about the rivalry between Dana and HAWTHORNE INTERMEDIATE. My last two children went to Dana and I never heard of such a conflict between the two schools. I know now that Dana was not a very good school because my daughter went to Hawthorne High her freshman year as an ?A? student and she entered all the honors classes which she almost failed. ?Go figure.? It seems to me that Hawthorne High gives special treatment to Dana students and Hawthorne Intermediate students don?t get squat. Please explain this to me like I was a student from Dana. Pat Underwood LHS Class of 1963 # 1 Jim Sloey
Jim Sloey-NO.....
About the rivalry. It would be hard for me to be objective seeing as I went to HIS. I think the rivalry on the Feedback page concerned sports. Academically, I would have to say that you couldn't find better teacher-administrators than the likes of Harry Plotkin, Pete Mannion, and a few others. No, I wouldn't grade Dana low on anything, although Russ Jacobsen single-handedly dropped their overall GPA about a point and a half in 1956. Now Russ, you know I'm just funnin' ya' huh. It was really only a point.

As to where you live, sometimes you end up there by choice, and sometimes by circumstance. All places I have lived (not that many) are different now than two years ago, let alone twenty, thirty, forty, or fifty. In my experience, I can be happy anywhere, it is my decision. I realize that there are days I do decide to be unhappy, but they are few and far between. It is up to me to be happy, not my surroundings!
