Message: Hey fellow cougars, it's almost Thanksgiving. I don't know about you all, but one thing that I'm grateful for is John's hard work at keeping Cougartown alive and running. For a nominal fee of $10.00, he has provided us countless hours of happiness. So how about it fellow cougs? Let's support this special forum that we get so much pleasure from, and really show John just how thankful we are of his hard work and dedication. John, I know this is a few months late, but better late than never. And thank you again for Cougartown.
Hi Maria, It's nice to hear from an 80's Coug as sometimes I wonder if the 80's, 90's or 00's Cougars even look at this site.
Thanks for the nice thoughts and Ctown commercial too; it is appreciated.

We don't go to them as much as we used to. Our favorite is Casino Pauma in Pauma Valley, it's in a Orange Grove, they have a great deal Sunday thru Thurs. nites, 2 prime rib dinners for $10.95 and its good! Our little town is becoming known, when we moved here 27 yrs ago the population was 3,500 now its 22,000. We were surprised, at our 30 yr reunion we saw Collen McDermott, she had heard of V.C., she has a friend that lives down the hill from us. Gaylen & I are still married, we celebrated 30 years last June. He hasn't forgotten you & Joann DeBry, he said you had a good sense of humor to put up with his teasing and he wanted me to tell you we have a red head too. She's a strawberry blonde with blue eye's and is 21, she's our youngest. Take Care! John, hope you had a good week-end off!

But you hit it right on the head. Jude's dad got that ball autographed while Emmett was umpiring in the old PCL. In fact the ball has "Official Pacific Coast League" printed on it. I thought that was pretty cool. Hey Lyman Moss...you still out there? What the heck happened to the dawgs this year? Go PAC 10! Boy we could really use a dose of that Hawthorne humidity and warm up here right now. Overnight temp's been in the low teens the last week or so. Too cold already for this time of the year. I told Doris that the "Brass Monkey" had become a eunuch. She got a good laugh over that. That's all folks! MAY THE COUGAR BE WITH YOU. P.S. Sloey glad to hear that you're getting back in fightin shape. Hang in there buddy.

Message: I remember when I was a kid in Hawthorne and after school on halloween I'd run home to help carve the pumpkin. I'd throw a costume together and race back to school for the carnival. Ramona had the best carnival, particularly the year Mrs. Higgins was the PTA president. There were game booths set up all over the playground and a haunted house in the bungalow. There was a cake walk and place to dunk for apples. Every kid in the neighborhood showed up but as soon as it got dark enough we were out hitting the houses for candy. (or some were hitting the houses with eggs) I've shared this before, but at the risk of boring some of you I'm going to share this memory again. My sisters and I would come back home when our bags got too heavy. There was always a risk that Mom or Dad would say, "That's it. Time for bed." But if we were lucky we'd sneak in and out without them knowing. At the end of the night, I remember sitting on my bed, in my flannel PJ's, emptying the bag onto my bed to sort through the bootie. There was the smell of Snickers, popcorn balls, Tootsie Rolls and Tootsie Roll Pops. Rudy's mom always gave us the big Hershey's chocolate bar with almonds. I hit her house twice. I remember that feeling of sitting with what must have been 10 pounds of candy in my lap and feeling like I'd won the lottery. Fun days! Happy Halloween everybody...... Dizzy Lizzy, Goddess of the cake walk.
Yep I remember going through the big brown bag looking for the best of the booty. Seems like there were lots of tootsie rolls and tootsie pops and those little rolled up in cellophane, multi-colored checker shaped only about a half inch across thingys, and lots of jelly beans when I was a kid. They didn't have any of the small snickers or small Hershey bars in my day, so they would give out the BIG STUFF and that's what I'd dig out and treasure. I think I'll put together a costume and go out tonight.....whattayasay Janet??

I really feel for Scioscia, and get the cartoons out of baseball and please do not associate the Angels with L.A. They are the Orange County Team. Dana Gioia, your poetic justice turned a lot of "Dust Bowl Okies, Arkies, Jayhawks, Mos, and Native Californians, who provided Haytown with its roots , over in their graves. Many of these men and women gave their hearts and souls to building Hawthorne into a great town. We grew up in a place that was safe, sane and full of love and respect. Our parents, friends, and neighbors all had a common bond, to make Hawthorne better for all who lived there. "A city of good neighbors". We might have been known as the ghetto kids to those up on the hill,(PV) but we all shared in the pride of being from Hawthorne. JB, my mom has the picture of the VFD at her home and she'll provide the missing names as soon as she can. Hope Jim is feeling better.
