Message: How about Freebird by Lynryd Skynrd for a breakup song? That's not why I'm writing but just thought of it! Saw the post from Chris Knight looking for floral wedding arch pictures and thought I'd suggest a quick way to find some. Go to www.dogpile.com (seriously) and type in "floral wedding arch" and you'll come up with lots of websites with good pictures. Like any search engine, some results will be worthless but I bet you'll find some that will help. And hi to Sharon Branigan again! Called her the other day and had a great conversation after only what, 25+ yrs or so? Great talking to you Sharon. Hope Chris the concrete guy could at least help with advice. Hey I just got back from Indianapolis but it doesn't look like we have anyone who actually lives there huh? Except for the speedway, I can see why now! (Oh and John, throw out that high school picture of me PLEASE!!)

Message: Does anyone else remember a time when a plane flew over hawthorne and dropped pieces of paper.
if you got the right one you won money? or some
sorta prize. it seems to me this was around 1955
or so but I could be a few years off. I remember us and our neighbors running around and grabbing them as they fell. It was some kind of promotional thingy.
Re the WTC. my daughter was in NY about 3 weeks before sept 11 and of course being her first trip there, had to see all the sights. She has a few pictures taken from the WTC observation deck and even sent post cards from the WTC and bought my grandson a t-shirt there with the trade center picture on it. Of course he has not even removed the sales tickets or worn it. She was so glad she was able to experience it before it was attacked.
Yes, I remember when they dropped the flyers from a plane too, and it was about 1955. I don't remember the circumstances, but do remember I was at a friends (George Gates LHS62) on 135th between Ramona and Hawthorne Bl. when they unloaded the plane. It was before any litter laws, I'm sure.

Only on special nights do perform as Steely Damned but I am sure that if you catch Rockola, you can make a request and you won't be disappointed. Rockola is probably the best night club band in So. Cal. Just to note, Steely Damned played in a competition tribute gig in NYC last year. It was on MTV I believe. Tell them I sent you. If they forgot who I am, I was the one with the cowboy hat and boots they made fun of. They also have a web site www.rockola.com. Go Cougs.

Just shows to go ya, they don't call me Queen of deNial for nothin'. Let me tell you, though, in retrospect, it was worth every drop of embarrassment to have that little boy's face burned in my memory, all glassy-eyed and slack jawed, staring like a deer looking at headlights. "Quadder Dollars" refers to a HHS carnival held in 1976 in which you paid for various food items and carnival games with "Quadder Dollars" -- basically a fancy name for tickets. Gloria and Sharon were selling Quesadillas at this event -- it was the first time I had ever heard of this food item -- and I spent every Quadder Dollar I had on them. Sufficient?

Message: I was at the Daytona 500 in '89 and everybody was talking about the time a Hawthorne girl was helping a Hawthorne boy with his math. Seems he saw something that day and it changed his life forever. In '92 I was in Seattle for the Harley Davidson Dealers convention and heard hundreds of people talking about the same thing. This last year I was at the USC/ucla football game (SC beat ucla in case you didn't hear) and they told the same story at halftime over the PA system.
No specific names were given. No specific dates. Ms.Estrada, I'm sure your secret is still safe, but for the fact Mr. Baker now knows.
Thank you for sharing and happy new year.
So THAT'S the 6th grader they were talking about in the noon movie at HHS in 1962. Hmmmmm.....

Message: Well here it is almost Feb. and the Olympics are about to begin. Security in Salt Lake City is at an all time high. As many of the local folks as can swing it must be out of town by 3pm. That means that they must be to work a few hours earlier. The main streets will be turned into a walking mall till the early morning. I'm glad it's coming but will be happy when it's all over and life can resume it's usual mundane routine.
The movie American Graffiti seems to have been written by someone who cruised Hawthorne Blvd. Maybe Alan Hauge knows?
Jim (Lanny Harris)
I thought everyone knew who wrote American Graffiti. George Lucas, from Star Wars fame, with help from Gloria Katz.

Message: Picture it. Hawthorne 1962. Ramona Elementary School had a sixth grade teacher named Miss McLaughlin. She was a tiny lady with a powerful presence and my favorite teacher. This is why. I was one of the unfortunate girls who developed early and was required (by parental force) to wear, the still dreaded, bra. One cold Spring morning I went to school dressed in a wool skirt, warm sweater and thick tights, but by lunch time the winds changed and the Santa Ana's brought the temperature up into the 90's. I was dying. I raced home and changed into a light cotton tank top and comfortably returned to school, sans the bra. Miss McLaughlin asked me to help Todd Wadman with his math. Eager to please her, I made my way to the front of his desk and leaned over to show him how to multiply fractions. I patiently explained each step and even showed him how to check it. When I looked up to see if he was following me I saw that his eyes had glazed over and he was staring at something but it wasn't the math. I looked down and saw my uncovered, unharnessed boobs right there in front of a boy! I was mortified. I stood up and walked out of the classroom and went home. I cried to my mother that we either had to move or I had to be sent away to a private girls school. My mother called the school and spoke to Miss McLaughlin. The next day she met me out in front of the classroom. She was so sweet. She had a talk with Todd and assured me that he had promised never to speak to anyone about what had happened. To my knowledge he never did. Miss McLaughlin handled my most embarrassing moment with great understanding and sympathy. And Todd Wadman handled it like a gentleman. So there you go, John. A Hawthorne story. DZ
Great Hawthorne story Liz. The fantasy is, being a sixth grader once myself, Todd Wadman may be a gentleman but, I'm bettin' HE TOLD IT ALL!!! Not only did he tell it, he EMBELLISHED IT!!!

Message: Jay and the American's didn't really start Steely Dan. Walter Becker and Donald Fagan appeared one day at the "Brill Building" attempting to peddle their songs. They stumbled into the offices of the management company of Jay et al. and were signed up to play in the backing band. While they were there, they recorded some demos that they used to get a deal with ABC/Dunhill in LA. They bailed on Jay and recorded "Can't Buy a Thrill" Years later, after Steely Dan became one of the most influential bands in history, the Jay manager had the demos pressed on to CD and sold -- a bitter episode for a band that prides itself on the ultimate in studio quality having the most ragged and rough demo quality stuff sold for public consumption.
How do you "press on to CD"?
